WOW! This has been the absolute best tutorial for hummin bird sonar units that I have ever witnessed! Your presentation was definitive, ultra clear, and precise! I have subscribed to your channel, and look forward to seeing what other topics you have provided! RESPECT!

Bob, Such a great video. So many do not understand that we watch the videos to learn and their ego trips and silly chatter don't help! You also understand that screen flash is the enemy of learning. Slow, clear and of modest duration is what makes it happen. Gold star for you! Your explanations were clear and helpful. Actually, too damn clear. You "helped" me understand that my existing Terrova won't work with my new Humminbird as I had hoped. Ah, well, you probably saved me a good many hours of trying to make it happen. Thanks so much. I'll be looking for your other videos.

Here we are almost two years later, and this was a super-useful video - thanks! I am about to buy an Ulterra or Ultrex, but I use Garmin 106sv's. If I were to be moving along, looking at side-scan (or Down Imaging) and see some structure on the screen, I know I can mark it as a waypoint. Is there a way to tell the Ulterra or Ultrex to go to that waypoint (using iPilot GPS rather than iPilot Link) since I'm not using Humminbird screens? Would I just have to manually 'drive' my boat to that waypoint?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff3 жыл бұрын
Craig, unfortunately, only the Humminbird sonar units will communicate with the Minn Kota i-Pilot Link trolling motor. In your case, you'd set a waypoint, navigate back to it manually with trolling motor deployed and hand held remote in hand. The instant you either arrive at your waypoint and/or see on sonar what you were searching for, you'd hit the Spot-Lock button (anchor icon). Another option, since you have Garmin sonar, would be to trade for a Garmin trolling motor.

Hey there. Thanks for this great video. Is it possible to set the position of the boat a few feets away from the targeted fish (purporse is linear casting and not jigging) with the nose of the boat pointing exactly and precisely to the target with the i Pilot Link by setting the target position on your Humminbird Unit ?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is accomplished using the "JOG" function on the Minn Kota. Once the motor is in Spot-Lock mode, using the hand-held remote, touch the "HOME" button (shaped like a house). A green bullseye will appear on the screen of the remote. Then, using the left arrow, right arrow, plus (for forward), or minus (for rearward), tap these buttons one time for a 5 foot move in that direction. EXAMPLE: if you want to go 25 feet left, tap the left arrow 5 times (5x5=25).
@kollyar4 жыл бұрын
Great ! Another question. In your vidéo or in general, is your Boat always moving « nose to direction » with the Minn Kota Ipilot Link ? It would give the possibility to stop the Boat a few feets before the target and knowing the exact angle of casting, without goiing over the spot and spooking the fish.

Hello Bob, i see you have a Solix for side scan and a lowrance hds for 2d and down scan. Do you have interference with 2 transducers?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff2 жыл бұрын
No, because I select different frequencies for identical technologies across the two units. For example, the 2D on the Solix may be set to 200 kHz, and the 2D on the Lowrance may be set to 83 kHz.
@robertteti22533 жыл бұрын

Thanks for the video. One question - Assuming your side imaging transducer is in the back of the boat? Do you need to give the transducer an offset value to make sure so that when you spot lock, you are actually over it at the front of the boat?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff3 жыл бұрын
I usually just use my "Jog" function for precise positioning to account for any offset. There is normally no offset, however, because the sonar unit creates the waypoint at its original location with its internal antenna, then the trolling motor head positions itself over that same waypoint. Since the transducer has no GPS antenna, it really doesn't figure into the GPS positioning equation.

I have a question....let's say I had my screen split between a chart and side scan. I'm cruising along and spot some fish on a point. Can I go to the chart screen and place a spot that would position me further out on the point and then "goto" that spot and cast to the school of fish on the point?
@scottebben6583 Жыл бұрын
With link, you have a couple options to do this. First off you could "go to" the waypoint you mark. While on your way to the point you can keep an eye on your remote screen for the distance you are from that point. If you wanted to be 75 feet away, start slowing down when you are 90 or so feet away and spotlock when you get close. The other option is when you "go to" your waypoint, select circle mode. Set radius and direction. Set your speed. Once you're on the circle path, you can cast to that point.

Can you have one HBird fishfinder with the capability of switching between the transducer that is shipped with it and a Minn Kota trolling motor transducer? Thanks, Keith
@HoldingTheLineSkiff Жыл бұрын
Keith, there are so many trolling motor/sonar/wire combinations out there that I cannot really answer your question without more specifics. Your best bet is to find the serial number of all of the devices you want to include in this system, then call Humminbird Technical Support. They are based in Alabama, and if they can't get right to you, they'll call you back within 2 hours. The number is 800.633.1468.
@ke3552 Жыл бұрын
@Holding the Line Guide Service I appreciate you getting back with me. I've got the trolling motor but am still doing research on the fishfinders. I am leaning very strongly toward HBird as I specifically bought my Minn Kota tm with Link for the networking capabilities. I forgot to say thanks for the good work that you're doing for us and that I subbed earlier today. Thanks, Keith

Where do you find that info that those in and after 2017 trolling motors have a more precise gpS in them?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff2 жыл бұрын
Sir, if you look at the cover on the control head of your trolling motor and you see the blue "Bluetooth" symbol, you'll know your unit is a late 2017 model or newer. Prior to late 2017, these units were not equipped with Bluetooth. Good luck!

Can you use this same process to fish a particular line of ridges / structure over, say, 1000 yards? (Fish down one side, then back the other?) Or, can you only use this to keep your boat over a particular target?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff2 жыл бұрын
Spot-Lock only holds you on a spot, it does not allow you to move forward, rearward, laterally, or diagonally. Movement in these directions may be accomplished by "Jogging" 5 feet at at time using the Jog function on the handheld remote control.
@techforceonsitellc63382 жыл бұрын
@@HoldingTheLineSkiff Is there a technology with these trolling motors that allows you to follow lake contours for an "auto pilot" experience specifically when trolling? Like, can you click on two spots on your fish finder and have your boat troll back and forth or at least one direction.

Would you recommend using a side imaging transducer build into the lower unit of the trolling motor since you wouldn't be using the SI at optimal speed?
@HoldingTheLineSkiff3 жыл бұрын
Ernie, I do NOT find SI very useful when built into the trolling motor. DI and SI very much count on a slow, steady feed of information which is best obtained when operating the boat going slow and straight. This is rarely the case when the trolling motor is used, either to propel the boat or when on Spot Lock.

Why can’t you just hit go to then cursor instead of spot lock
@HoldingTheLineSkiff3 жыл бұрын
Because your screen will either be frozen or you will lose the use of the cursor during the entire time it takes for the motor to traverse to the selected location.
@HoldingTheLineSkiff3 жыл бұрын
Additionally, hitting GO TO then CURSOR will not result in the motor Spot Locking at the destination. It will simply arrive, then turn off, not arrive, then Spot-Lock.
