Please don’t feel this is patronizing- you made one of the best photography videos on KZbin. Absolutely correct.

The portrait of Beulah drew me immediately to her face, I never noticed the gun, look but don't see.

I don’t know how but I’m in the middle of starting a large format project in the small village I live in that is full of interesting people with interesting stories. And it is so strange how I too was toying with the idea of using my 150mm (5X4 camera) lens to do more environmental portraits so the two books previewed came as a message to me. Yet again thank you for the inspiration.

Robbie, THANKS for this awesome video! I am ashamed to say that I had no idea Mitch Epstein (one of my favourite photographers!) published this retrospective with Steidl. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford to buy it. Meanwhile I collect books that I source exclusively… at my local thrift stores. Over a couple of years I managed to acquire a couple of hundreds amazing PHOTOBOOKS. They are my joy and inspiration when it comes to my personal photography. And yes - as you said it - these books are great teachers.

The house marked Gone is one of the most arresting images in American Power, the whole segment with Beulah is such a great part really. Thanks for sharing the archive interviews of her, I'd never seen those!

I rarely, or should I say, never take the time to comment on KZbin videos, but this one hit differently, and I feel the need to say it out loud. Having studied fine art photography for four years, I've seen Crewdon's and Epstein's work being brought up in class more than once by teachers and students, pointing out different qualities in their work and general appreciation for these two artists. But the way you dissected these bodies of work really resonated with my way of looking at portraiture/documentary work. If these books are untaped knowledge, you are doing a wonderful job sharing it with your viewers. This is very high-quality content, keep it coming! Cheers.

Nice video Robbie... Those old TVs, they were expensive to dispose of and weighed about a million pounds, so stand for new tv they became!

Great video. One correction, though, his first B&W digital;, in fact, his first digital after the 8x10 Portra days was "Sanctuary" in 2010, which was shot on Phase One medium format digital. Sanctuary is a fantastic book. Not portraiture this time. Instead, architectural shots of the backstage sets from a famous Italian movie production lot featuring the remnants of Roman sets (lots of columns, chariots, etc.
