Quail manure can be used as fertilizer but it is a very hot manure and there are a few things you must do to make sure it doesn't "burn" your plants.

Hi Chris - We clean out our chicken coop and quail pens at least once a month. The manure & bedding go right into our compost bins along with grass, leaves, wood chips, garden waste and kitchen scraps to complete the composting process. This also helps keep the flies, ordos and pests to a minimum. In the spring the compost is completely broken down and ready to be used in the gardens. When we raised rabbits, we also added their manure into the compost bins. I do like you weed barrier. We love your videos!

Sounds like you have the composting process down. Like you said, if you get the carbon and nitrogen ratio correct, it breaks down pretty quickly.

lol, that contraption with a wheel under it for hauling. Wheelbarrow, wheel barrel, gets point across 😆. I try to keep old hay under my quail, but chicken constantly dragging it out scratching.

Love free manure, I scrape out my chicken coop 2x a year and use that, already pretty well broken down. Now I have my ducks, which make massive amounts of manure, I have my rabbits, and my coturnix/bobwhite/valley quail. I just filled up one of my tumblers with quail and duck manures and straw. My other tumbler will be for the rabbits. I grow my pots plants in my backyard compost and manure, and lemme tell ya, gooooood stuff.

I wouldn't go straight from the cloaca to the garden butt I rectum the pine shavings and bird manure can be dumped on the ground, covered with some "🤎 brown" watered, and used in about a month or 2.

I have 2 young rabbits with their waste going into a Rubbermaid container like your set-up; I just cleaned out my quail droppings (I just got 1 male and 5 female Coturnix). I decided to put that which was mixed with a little bit of hay in the rabbit waste container and put wood shavings over it. Do you think layering like that will work well? I don't have much room to "compost" a big pile. I chip my prunings and most food waste goes to my worm bin, so I am hoping this will compost "in place" and maybe have 2-3 Rubbermaid containers to cycle through. Thoughts?

I wish we could get those soldier flies up here in the northeast. You can sell them to reptile owners, like myself, at a premium! I tried to attract them to my compost pile at my old apartment, when we actually had a yard. I’m looking to invest in red composting worms to help me compost on my balcony since I don’t have any bare ground to make a traditional pile. Do you know if those types of worms will help me compost the quail manure? I’m investing in a couple barrel composters to process the majority of my quail waste but it’s nice to have options!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know that red wigglers would be able to keep up with the quail manure. I don't think they could do well in fresh manure. If the manure is a little composted first they will probably break it down from there but it can be a little too hot for them when fresh. It is worth a try though, I may be wrong on that.
@TheShalomstead
@TheShalomstead 4 жыл бұрын
Slightly Rednecked thanks for the reply. I will keep the manure out of my first worm bin. Once I have enough of a population to start another, I will do a little experimentation and report back with my findings. It’s sounding like I’m going to need to quite a few barrels. Good thing I have the space! But it seems like I’m going to have to build my own to save some money.

@@Slightlyrednecked well you could get a barrel and modify it to fit to the chassis of a wheel barrow, then you could call it a wheel barrel. Just found an egg in the poop tray, it's slightly smaller than a macadamia nut, good candidate for hatching, wont take up much room in the incubator.

It needs to be about 100 degrees for the first week. Then you can start to drop it about 10 degrees every few days. Just watch the birds. If they are all huddled up under the heat lamp, it is too cold and needs to be a little warmer. If they are all scattered around, it is fine.

My question doesn't have much to do with the video but... Do you think it would be safe for the birds if I were to use unscented clumping cat litter instead of sand in a sandbox? I know I can get litter for about the same price as sand and it's easier to clean. I'm just worried that it might be too hard on their feet and there is also a lot of dust. Any advice would be great. Thanks for the vids! These are awesome!🙂
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on what the cat litter is made of. I would be more worried about them ingesting it than it being hard on their feet. I don't think it will clump up and be easier to clean though.

Never heard it called a wheel barrel, does the plastic have to be black to break it down?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
I have called it wheel Barrel and wheel barrow both. I get mixed up on what the correct way to say it is. :) No, the plastic doesn't really matter at all, it is just a cover to keep everything in place and keep weeds from growing up. If you were doing a traditional sheet mulch it would usually be covered with wood chips.

I feed my quail a whole seed mix. I'm thinking the problem with that is the wasted seed will sprout, even after composting. I don't use a hot method in my situation. No place for it. So if those seeds aren't destroyed in a hot compost, I'm effectively sowing all kinds of unwanted plants in my garden, some possibly in the weed category from a gardener's perspective. Any idea on what do so about that?
@madmaxofspokane1691
@madmaxofspokane1691 9 ай бұрын
If you would be using it for indoor plants or as a nutrient for growing mushrooms indoors, you can put it in canning jars and sterilize it in the Pressure Cooker. No seeds or other contamination will survive 90 minutes to 2 hours at 15# in the pressure cooker.

@rkade1838
@rkade1838 4 жыл бұрын
Kit Kat it depends on the environment humidity. For me I usually add approximately 200ml for start the. When it drops I don’t need to add no more then 30-50ml
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
Rezaul karim gave good advice. The one thing I would say is that humidity is determined by surface area, not volume. So it is better to fill one channel up completely and see how the humidity is affected than to partially fill several channels. I hope that makes sense. Just try to keep humidity between 50% and 75% and you should do fine.

Also, what should I do if hard poop is on their feathers? It’s hard as a rock.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on how much. If there is just a little bit on a few feathers just leave it be, they will eventually shed those feathers and take care of it themselves. If it is a lot then you may need to soak them in an Epsom salt bath to help loosen it up so it will come off. I hope that helps.
