This is a process to bypass a lot of the complexity of making plaster moulds for slipcasting or press moulding. It might be possible to press the clay directly into the silicone, but the silicone is flexible and won't absorb moisture. These will be quite limiting compared to plaster.
Overall, this is a moderately complicated project, but is easier and will hopefully give better results than most introductions to plaster!

For those of you watching without an adblocker, what type of adverts were you shown for this video? They've changed the available options since I last uploaded. I used to be able to limit the adverts to the non-intrusive sidebar/banner type (that might be why I never made any money on here though!), but now it seems they don't let you control that aspect. So I'm not actually sure what kind of adverts will be attached to my video. I'm hoping it's not unskippable pre-roll ads, but I'm kinda guessing they'll do that wherever they can :/

I actually pay the monthly fee to KZbin to get no ads. I watch more on KZbin than I watch on Netflix or anything else so I just chalk it up to entertainment expense.

Slip casting just uses plaster molds. The plaster absorbs some of the liquid from the wet clay. Silicone molds are amazing. That's a great idea for a nice little gift to share a fridge magnet!

Thank you for explaining this process so well for providing a starting point to slip-casting. I have beeen intimidated by the learning curve for slip-casting, but also I think the slip-molded work has a stigma associated with it, as you mentioned...

Hello, Joe! Obviously, pouring the slip directly into the silicone mold of such designs is most likely impossible. But I had the experience of pouring a slip into a flat carved piece made of silicone - these were tiles with calligraphy. I milled the model from plastic on a CNC machine, and then made a silicone mold based on it, especially for filling the slip. However, after some time it is necessary to top up the slip a little, and the part dries in the mold longer, and a fixing pad is needed on top and bottom so that the tile dries without deformations, But when it comes to a complex design with very small details, I did not get any other implementation like this.

This is awesome! I have struggled with learning slip casting. This technique is quite helpful, thank you!

I hope it does help! This approach skips over the parts I hated the most, but I'm not sure if those were the worst sticking points for everyone else. If nothing else, this is less messy, which is always a plus!

One note is that you can make silicone molds yourself, but don't use unfired clay to do it. The minerals in the clay body inhibit the curing of some kinds of silicone, so you'll want to go plaster -> silicone -> plaster if you're looking to replicate a particularly nice piece of greenware. The benefit of creating your own silicone molds is that they last much longer than plaster molds, which are already quite durable of course. You can also use silicone to mold other materials, as well, if you've ever thought about turning a finished piece of pottery into a plastic replica, or shrinking or growing your pieces using shrink-cure materials.

That's useful to know! I know there are considerations with the type of resin and silicone, with some resins inhibiting curing of some silicones (IIRC I needed a tin-based silicone for my prints), but I had no idea that the same could be true of unfired clay.

@@OldForgeCreations Yes I believe it's the sulfur compounds in the clay, always some pesky sulfides and things. Mostly burned out by bisque/glaze firing

Great ideas, thanks for sharing. Could I suggest you could also fill the original mould with wax rather than plaster, then you could soften or melt them out if they stick?

That's a great idea, and not one that I'd considered! It would definitely make them easier to remove than they are when filled with plaster, without the cost and mess of using silicone instead

Hi joe I don’t think is wrong to sale the product you make with the silicone molds, because people make cakes with that to sale 🤗
@OldForgeCreations
@OldForgeCreations 7 ай бұрын
You can certainly get away with it, if you're selling cakes at a local market. That doesn't make it legal though, and doesn't mean that the company who own the copyright would be happy if they found out. And they're far more likely to find out if you sell the products online

@@OldForgeCreations I still thinking it is ok, the bakeries in USA sale their products, cakes online and they use the molds, if the molds are made for sale to do stuff, the license is there for use and to sale, I don’t know the laws in UK, but I’m pretty sure is ok in US , actually they even have recipes to use on the molds with liquid silicone to make charcuterie bords etc for sale🤗

There's actually no need to guess or assume here, as plenty of lawyers have written blogs on this very topic. Getting away with something is totally different to being legally allowed to do it, you can't use evidence of the former to judge the latter. (Edited to fix typo)
