The environment is actually optimal for cyanoacrylate glue to cure. We just need to know the chemical process. When "traditional" glues are curing, the process is evaporation of the solvent which the glue is suspended in. Not so with CA glue, it's the other way around. CA is reacting with moisture. When exposed to moisture, the CA immediately polymerize, so that it solidify into long plastic fibers. The thinner layer of CA, the quicker and stronger polymerization. In Siberia, inevitably old engine oil will have been contaminated with moisture from the ambient air. Not least when the oil is cold. So basically, the glue would soon run down along the piston skirts, and it would be spreading as a very thin film. Eventually there will be contact between the glue and the oil residue within the cylinder. Remember, moisture/wetness is what make the glue cure. The cyanoacrylate will immediately polymerize, as it react with the moisture in the engine oil. Within a couple of seconds, a solid web of polymer fibres will form in the very thin layer of glue which is between the pistons and cylinder walls. In fact, the result will be the perfect cyanoacrylate bonding. (It's good to be a geek...)

Superglue cures in the presence of water. Your skin has enough water in it to cure super glue quickly, and the atmosphere has enough water in it to cure the glue more slowly. This is why using too much glue or trying to glue a surface that's larger takes longer. The glue in the middle just can't get access to moisture from the air to cure. To see this in action, get some superglue and drip it into a cup of water, it'll cure instantly on contact with the water.

In my head I am seeing the large volume of cyanoacrylate liquid possibly displacing and / or washing the thin film of oil out of the cylinder right there and between the ring lands and the aluminum surface of the piston along with the cross hatch pattern still visible in the cylinder walls all gave extra surface for the glue to hold itself in place! Also another fun fact, the chemical in super glue is virtually the same chemical in Loc-Tite!

the reason why it worked so well is in the steps you guys did. You put some in and ran the engine and got the first batch hot, then you poured more in and allowed that to cure fully. The first batch allowed the oil to be washed and burned from the cylinder and prevented new oil from slinging in. Your second batch had a perfect environment to stick in.

It has piston rings. Those rings act as a 'seal' in order to help stop the oil from being sucked up and in to the combustion chambers, and to also help the engine make good compression.... but those piston rings also act as a 'brush' to sweep away that fine film of oil that is around the bore surface, so if that engine has a 25mm up and down stroke then that is 25mm of oil that is removed all the way round the cylinder walls of each cylinder bore, plus with the high mileage this engine has, then that is the perfect 'key' on both the cylinder walls of each 4 cylinders and the sides of all 4 pistons for a thin film of superglue to "take" and then stick each piston SOLID in its cylinder.

Super glue has good resistance to non polar solvents like oil and gasoline. Some people use linseed oil and superglue to create an extra hard oil finish on woods. Something along those lines is happening here between the metal and it's causing a good seal.

@nathansmith36083 жыл бұрын
Cyanoacrylate glue has acetone, xylene, or other solvents in it to keep it thin and flowable before it gets used & sets (which happens as the solvent evaporates and the main chemical turns to plastic as it's catalyzed by oxygen, etc.). That solvent base is a degreaser if you use enough, just like gasoline or paint thinner, so that's why it could overcome the oil. You used enough to dissolve away the oil film and get a solid bond on the metal

The thing about cyanoacrylate adhesives they work in an absence of space + minimal application. That's how the various Loctite thread-lock adhesives work. The smaller the space between your two parts to be bonded, the more effective it's going to be. The less porous your surfaces are, the better the bond is. The less adhesive, the shorter your bonding time.

That smell from the engine when it was running and probably while heating the pistons with the gas torch is cyanide gas, so be careful breathing it in. Because it's liquid it flows into the tiny imperfections in the metal. It fills all the microscopic 3D voids then hardens. There were many square millimeters of material bonded together with some tough plastic. If it's denser than oil it will push the oil out of the way as it settles.

I wanted to mention but you've mentioned on the end , you're glueing something and it brakes apart after a short time. Superglue, or cyanoacrylate was developed during the war by B.F. Goodrich in searching for a clear plastic that could be used for gun sights. The answer to your problem is what American ladies use for removing the polish from their fingernails, 100% Acetone. It will reduce cyanoacrylate to a malleable goo in no time at all. Of course, it's latent heat of evaporation ensures that it will evaporate very, very quickly, so it would be wise to pour in a half cup or so and screw in the sparkplug. In very little time, it will wash the thinned glue down into the sump. I'd suggest that it be empty and the plug removed to that the mix isn't drawn into the oil passages when you turn the motor over or they will be plugged when the Acetone boils off and the glue re-hardens.

Maybe the glue didn't actually glue the surfaces as much as it clamped the piston in place, basically killing all the tolerances the piston needs to move. It's possible that the glue expands while curing. I think this particular style of glue reacts with either oxygen or co2, so it could gain a bit of volume in that reaction. There is also the possibility that the glue is much thinner than the oil, meaning the molecules aren't as big. This of course means, the glue can get into places where the oil can't. Maybe even thin enough to get between the oil layer?
