Great video! Thanks for sharing. I saw Peter Frampton in concert back in the 70's. Was always fascinated by this effect. Discovered the 1st televised performance of this effect was a steel lap guitar player back in the 50's on the Porter Wagner Show. Now here I am today using a T.C.Helicon Talkbox pedal with a mic instead of a tube. I also have a synth keyboard with a mic and vocoder capabilities. Since this COVID nonsense has cut back performing, I use them mostly to entertain the grandkids. I think I enjoy the grandkids more than performing on stage. Definitely a friendlier crowd. No need to put up chicken wire to stop the flying beer bottles.

There are also a lot of small, practice combo amps that have integrated speaker-out's. I have a small Crate combo practice that is not only a hugely underrated as an amp in general, but has the speaker out and is now a dedicated talkbox driver.

Hey, a horn driver is called that because it is the element used to "drive" the sound in a PA speaker's horn - you know, the top part that's shaped like a funnel. The driver screws into that, inside the speaker cabinet.

The phase effect sound is a low-larynx thing. The easy way to replicate that is to try to mimic the Yogi Bear voice. With just a little practice, it's really easy to be aware of and control how low or high your larynx is (which also helps with singing). I'm really not much of a fan of talk boxes, but you use it well, moot. It's not what equipment the musician uses but how they use it, and it's always cool to see someone using something in a new way.

just with some 16ga speaker wire soldered to the amp's normal speaker connection. I should eventually break down and make a 1/4" connector for the amp, just to make things easier, but I'm not bothered to do it right now, since I only use it for talkbox!

@closertotheheart The talkbox actually fits after your amp. It's really just a speaker in a box with a tube coming out, So you connect the output of the amp to a talbox instead of the speaker cab. However, an easier way is to use the rocktron banshee, with creates a similar sound, but fits in your regular pedal chain.
@rars0n16 жыл бұрын
It's called "Set Your Voice Free", by Roger Love. It came with an audio CD for the exercises and other examples. A lot of the sounds he describes in the book are on the CD, whether it is good or bad technique, which makes it a lot easier to tell what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong. I'm no expert, but everything in the book seemed to make sense once I soaked it up, and my voice has improved noticeably. Although I've been lazy on the exercises lately.
@mootbooxle12 жыл бұрын
you will most likely have to disconnect your speaker leads and wire them to a 1/4" female jack to make things simple. I assume it's something like a Dunlop Heil Talk Box?

Very nice Talk Box demo. If you ever get bored, try sticking a kazoo on the end of the tube. It's not really that useful, but as long as the resonator lasts you'll get one very interesting fuzz tone.

Johnny Appleseed, if you had watched the video... the talkbox I'm using here is more or less a Electro-Harmonix Golden Throat without the enclosure. @FEARsc0pe it all depends. You could use a cheap guitar amp for it I guess, you don't really need anything too high of wattage. A 15 watt amp would probably work. That's what I'm using in this video.

@frozenroby Hey! The talkbox I'm using in this video is basically the guts of a vintage Electro-Harmonix Golden Throat - that is, it's the driver (Electro-Voice 1823m) and the Golden Throat tube connector. Do I recommend the Rocktron Banshee 2? Absolutely. Best talkbox on the market. Custom-built ones like I normally use are better, but the Rocktron has it all in one box.
@raizumichin13 жыл бұрын
@closertotheheart That's the case with every talkbox, not just the banshee. They all work the same way, the banshee just has its own preamp so you don't need to connect it after your regular amp. In any case, no sound from the talkbox will come out of the speaker cab, it will all come through your mouth (via the tube) so you'll need a vocal mic in front of your face to pick up the sound (for live use, at home you'll hear it the same way you hear yourself talk).

@TheBran1262 Hey thanks! It's just a natural finish, but the guitar is made of mahogany, which has a really cool texture. My 12-string is made exactly the same, but it doesn't look as cool, as it's stained a dark green color...you can't see the wood grain as well.
@Scritley16 жыл бұрын
Check out Moot Booxle's other vid where he shows you how to build one on the cheap. I watched his vid, went to radio shack, picked up some comparable parts, and had it built in less than an hour from a cheap old fender 10 watt amp and a Radio Shack outdoor horn type speaker. Learning to play it is a whole-nuther deal! Moot can build one and play one. good luck!
