Here is an interesting HID lamp experiment that I did:
I have used a Philips BodyTone 120-180W tanning bed fluorescent glowbottle starter to run a 175W M57 probe start metal halide lamp on a 175W H39 mercury vapor yardblaster ballast!!!!
I got inspiration for this experiment after seeing that some Japanese market metal halide retrofit lamps designed for use on mercury vapor ballasts often use internal glowbottle starters such as the Iwasaki Multi-Metal Hi-Ace lamps and just found it fascinating to see such metal halide retrofit lamps starting up like fluorescent lamps on preheat ballasts. I also did this experiment because I also really like preheat fluorescent lighting in addition to HID lighting.

Interestingly, the highest power tanning bed fluorescent tubes have a very similar operating current compared to North American 175W M57 probe start metal halide lamps and 175W H39 mercury vapor lamps. That was why I decided to use these Philips BodyTone starters in my experiment.

On the first time the startar starts the lamp with a few seconds. But in second time why its turns on so late and slow, although the startar was also flickering very weirdly??

Although the lamps seem to work fine on mercury vapor ballasts when new, they may become harder to start when they age. It’s interesting that yours did start without any external ignition components.

How did you wire it

The starter was simply wired in parallel with the lamp.
