Using Tape To Overclock an Old Optiplex

If your old OEM system lacks the bios features to overclock a CPU, then you might want to try the electrical tape method. By simply sticking tape over a couple of processor pins you should be able to increase the clock speed, but does it work and is it stable? Let's find out!
Today's system includes the Q6600, 8GB DDR2 and a GT 1030.

This is called BSEL Mod, however it does not actually change the Multiplier but the FSB and Bus Speed. For the Q6600 the FSB jumps from 1066 to 1333 as you can see in CPU-Z. (Original Bus Speed = 266 --> 266x9 = 2.4GHz, Modded Bus Speed = 333 --> 333x9 = 3.0GHz)
@obvious_humor
@obvious_humor 7 жыл бұрын
Coldministrator How does that work on a technical view? like, what do those two pins control, and how does simply covering them work? In modern architectures there are base clocks and multipliers controlled by the BIOS, so is the bus speed determined by a CPU response somehow?
@Coldministrator
@Coldministrator 7 жыл бұрын
There is a total of three BSEL pads / pins on 775 processors and motherboards. I belive BSEL is short for "Bus Select" They are used so the motherboard knows what Bus Speed the CPU is designed for. For Bus Speed 266 the CPU pulls all three of those pads to "High" or binary 1. A CPU with Bus Speed 333 only pulls the BSEL2 pad to "High" while the other two remain "Low" By covering the two pads for BSEL0 and BSEL1 on the CPU, the motherboard belives the installed CPU is designed for Bus Speed 333 and runns it at that speed. That is all the information i have, i hope this answers your question.

It's Intel QX6000/Q6000 series Spec Sheet info at it's finest :) How this works : LGA 775 CPU tell's MB how to clock it (front side bus), by using High/Low signals on BSEL pins. They are factory set, but because same CPU die is used in faster CPUs (in case Kentsfield, QX6850/QX6800), you can force/trick BIOS into clocking slower FSB clocked models higher (as ast as fastest option available in spec sheet). Problem with BSEL mod is two fold : 1) Motherboard has to support higher FSB "by default". 2) Frequency jump can be high enough to destabilise CPU on stock Vcore (can be bypassed by VID moding). 3) Some motherboards may require two pins taped for this mod to work. Others just one, and few motherboards may require complete ground route (ie. using alutape or "silver pen" between BSEL pins and grounding pins). BSEL method can be used on all LGA 775 CPU's that support higher FSB speeds in Spec Sheet.

Thanks for posting this, i just wrote pretty much the same before i found this comment... Also VID modding is usually a whole lot more complicated than just soldering a variable resistor between the feedback of the voltage controller and ground, i only ever did VID mods on boards where i couldnt figure out the OVP circuitry to raise the max possible VCORE a bit (might just be me beeing stupid or TYAN not using the example circuits from VC datasheet...) :)

Magnificent! You've saved me a whole heap of hassle :D You actually CAN overclock on a Dell 755 motherboard using a Front Side Bus multiplier program, which I was actually going to do (and may still do to squeeze out extra performance, many Q6600 chips can hit 3.6ghz or more stable in a Optiplex), but as a quick and simple mod, this is incredibly tough to beat :D Thank you for sharing this video and method with us all!

@joannaatkins822 7 жыл бұрын
Roland Tibold Dang that sucks! No I haven't tried that one. It's a pain in the bum to get the correct code from your motherboard for these programs to load properly. My advice would be to try this tape method, and see if you can live with the performance boost it gives you. If the tape mod doesn't work, have another go at setting the FSB with a different program; sometimes open source software gets coding a little wrong, so you end up underclocked.

Phil Atkins if this vid would have been earlier made, i could save about 10 dollars and much of modding from 771 to 775(next cpu will be x3363)

Roland Tibold Ahh, that is a bummer, but playing with computers and having fun modding them is a great deal of fun regardless. I'm building a 755 optiplex for a friend at the moment, and honestly it's more fun than my AMD FX system. The next big thing for me is finding the best graphics card that operates at 25W or under :/ I wish you best of luck with your builds, it sounds like you have your hands full...

I tried it on my last budget build when I saw it in the comments of one of your videos. Worked like a charm. You don't even need both pieces of Tape. I only put one on mine. The system is super stable. I ran it like 5 hours with prime95 just to test. Before that I had tried setFSB but it crashed the system at like 2.8 GHz because of the simultaneous Ram overclocking you get with setFSB

After making days and days of research i came across this video and it worked phenomenal on my Core 2 Duo E8400. Games run more smoothly but i do want to say that this tape method does not work for the Intel Pentium e5800. My computer did not want to start at all. Actually, expensive ones simply work on higher FSB already and BSEL mod doesn't do anything to them (Core 2 Extreme and 1600MHz FSB Xeons). For high multiplier CPU's, like E5700, a working "VID mod" may be necessary for stability (before doing BSEL mod).

The best part is you didn't even have to tape up the middle pin because it's a voltage pin (which doesn't need messed with in this scenario). The pin nearest to the notch only being taped over has the same effect. Even more easy for people to accomplish now haha.

I have been running this mod on an Opti780 full tower with a Q6600 for close to a year now. I can attest to the fact that it is stable with nothing more than replacing the aging thermal paste with new Dell OEM thermal paste. Stock heatsink / fan assembly. Add in a GTX750 (because it pulls power over PCIe), and it's a good casual game machine. It even streams decently to the Steam Link. I still find it appropriate that electrical tape is being used to patch out more performance from this aged platform.

hey I just did this too last week but I only used tape on the pin closest to the notch, which if I understand correctly is the pin determining fsb. I think the other pin is the for voltage determination. I succeeded with with a Q6600 in an HP 6000 pro, but it failed in an optiplex 960, and was just turning off and on which now makes me think it might have needed that second pin covered to unregulated the voltage too. Thoughts?

I've been using this method for a few years now! I've upgraded to a new motherboard and case, but I was originally using this in an Optiplex 745 full tower. I went to upgrade the motherboard to one that supported Overclocking and the eBay lister lied in the description about the motherboard I was buying's overclocking abilities. This method was already done on my CPU earlier in the Optiplex system so I just kept it. Would have been nice to bump to 3.5Ghz since I got a T2 cooler with the build, at 3.0Ghz it never passes 45'c. My Q6600 is with with 8GB of matching DDR2 800mhz running in dual-channel, paired with a 240GB SSD and 3x700GB 10,000RPM server drives in Raid1. With a GTX 1050ti OC edition from Zotac to top it off (about a 20-30% Overclock at any given time depending how hot it is on the day). For GTA V, I experience some hiccups with loading textures at high speeds (C2Q series only supported SataII), but opening TaskManager and lowering the launcher priority to low and the game priority to above-normal I am able to load textures at real-speed. Without changing I couldn't fly a plane without going into the gap.

Daxton Anderson you need a board that supports ddr3, it will hold you back a lot. I'm running a q6600 in a ddr2/ddr3 board and it certainly plays gta v better on ddr3 than ddr2
