Great video! When I got my first 1911, that's when I started reloading. Of course first caliber was .45 acp. 😉I went with the Lee Classic Turret press. I see you have one of Tony's (TreeTopFlier) powder stands. I guess he's got so many requests for those he's thinking about starting a full time business. One upgrade that I really like is the case ejection system from Inline Fabrication. It replaces the index rod with one single metal rod, so you don't have that little plastic square to deal with. Works great! Reverses the direction and then flips the finished cartridge off into a bin. Love these Lee Presses! 👍

Eddie B, some people like rotating the turret by hand. I have tried a few different ways of hand loading with dies in different positions and even single stage at the same time as the turret doing different processes, on press priming, off press priming, using powder measure, using scoops, no matter what way, we need to be happy with our results and do it the way we like. They are very nice. Make sure you get a riser for the pistol dies for the auto powder measure. I use one for 9mm it works great. I need to get more risers though for each caliber. how come you did not check with calibers the overall length to ensure the book at the right depth
@johnshandloading79073 жыл бұрын
TJ Kaiser they are cast bullets that I have used many times. I know where on the lube groove they should sit (depth) and they were there. The absolute correct way to check a finished round is with a gauge. Using calipers can tell you the overall length and is a good guide, but is not always possible, since like in this case I am using hand cast, powder coated bullets that do not have a "book length" listed anywhere. In my initial testing of these bullets I used the barrel of my gun as a my gauge and then adjusted seating depth slightly to attain accuracy and dependability. I have an average overall length written down - but even that varies slightly from one cast bullet to the next. Thank you for asking an excellent question. I hope my response is adequate.

I’m having a problem with the primer arm. When I lower the ram the primer arm is supposed to pivot into place to seat the primer. What mine does 5 out of ten times is it starts to pivot then starts sliding upward and jamming against the shell holder. I can’t figure out why mine does that. Any help is appreciated.
@johnshandloading7907 Жыл бұрын
If I understand your issue correctly, I would start by looking inside the slot where the arm sits - make sure it is clean, clear and free of anything causing it to hang up. Also check the arm itself for smoothness and cleanliness. Even the smallest burr or chunk could interfere with the travel. It sort of floats in there and needs to be freely moving. Is yours this exact same model and is it new? If it is new and a little tinkering does not solve it - I would contact Lee customer service. They will help you.

@@johnshandloading7907 yes it’s new. funny thing is the large pistol primer arm works every time. The small pistol primer arm is the one giving me problems. I’m actually checking it over right now for burrs.

which die set do you recommend for a 9mm set up? I just purchased this press and the auto powder measure for it. I assume a three die setup is what I need. I'm obviously a newbie, so your advice will be greatly appreciated.
@johnshandloading79073 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the Lee 4 die pistol set. It has a carbide ring in the re sizing die that does not require case lube for resizing brass. The fourth die is a factory crimp die that will take the taper out of the case and help hold the bullet in the case as the last step. The four hole turrets that this press uses are made to use the 4 die sets. You can use the press any way you like, but with the auto powder measure and a 4 die set it works as designed by the manufacturer. If you do not have a "riser" for the auto powder measure you will need to get one. That should be listed as an option in the instructions. I use one for 9mm and it works perfectly.

I’ve been looking to start reloading 9mm and 380 to save money since I shoot 1-2k rounds a month. I’m a little confused though…the turret presses decap, resize, and prime the round in the same step/die. Do you absolutely need to clean the primer pocket on every load?
@johnshandloading79073 жыл бұрын
Josh it depends on how dirty they are. I usually decap all my brass in a separate operation prior to cleaning the brass. Then the cleaned brass goes through the four stations of the press. so my primer pockets are deprimed and cleaned before they go through the turret. Some people don't do it that way.

What happens when it gets shaved
@johnshandloading7907 Жыл бұрын
Good question, thank you for asking and thank you for watching. When powder coat gets shaved off it exposes the raw lead which can lead to leading or stripping off in the barrel when fired. It also makes the bullet slightly off balance which makes it shoot less accurately. It is not the end of the world. Best practice is to make them as perfect and consistent as possible. More critical in rifle bullets but still good to make the best ammunition you can with a little attention to detail.
