The launch of the SL3-S just made purchasing an SL2-S more likely for me. Long time user of the Sigma FP, which produces fabulous photos and video. But I just sold it (for various reasons). I’m going to miss recording CDNG direct to an SSD. I have excellent Sigma lenses and an M to L adapter. I can’t imagine ever owning a Leica L lens, they are huge and extremely expensive. I also wish a Panasonic body was an option, but I hate the plethora of buttons and custom options. One of the key aspects to Leica the ‘haters’ often ignore - the clean and simple design and workflow.

I own a Leica SL & Leica Q which I purchased in the UK, second hand in the last couple of years, for not much more than a quarter of their original new retail price. I've used Leica equipment since the 1960's from Leica IIIf onwards and always appreciated their superior build quality and the joy I got from using them which always encouraged me to go out and "shoot"! However they were all slower to use & get to know than other cameras and generally one step behind in the tech. they offered. For many years I used Nikon F SLRs & lenses for work which always did what was required, but I never fell in love with any of them except maybe the F3HP, (& latterly a battered D700!). I got into the L alliance by chance by borrowing & later opening an old Lumix S, and the comparison between that camera & SL (both of which I still own), clearly defined the 2 different philosophies between Leica & other brands - one built for purpose & to compete on price, & the other built for enjoyment. (No guessing which is which). In many ways the Lumix is the better camera (& I'm sure for most people the Lumix S5ii is best). The Lumix S & even the Sigma Contemporary lenses costing much less than the Leica glass are for 99%, of the time a more cost effective option. (I've often used the excellent Lumix S 20-60mm kit lens). Yes the elephant in the room as far as L mount users has been was the relatively slow auto focus of the Lumix/Leica cameras. However unless you're a dedicated sports photographer (get a used Sony A9 - for the same price as a used Lumix S5ii), you'll not really notice too much difference in the speed of focusing, even with the earlier contrast based auto focus cameras. Agreed - it's easy to get caught up in the specs list and think you need the highest number for each item, but most people really don't. I'm definitely more likely to pick up a camera I like using rather than my fastest camera. :)

I am more video centric and I was wondering if there is a record limit of 30 minutes still in place. I own the SL2-S and have Dummy Battery for studio and outdoors to keep it going without switching the battery. I usually test for overheating since I live in the San Antonio, Texas Area. I also own Sigma, Leica and Panasonic Lumix Lenses and have 3 S9's, S5II & S5IIX cameras. I do like the features of the SL3-S but am waiting to see how the Panasonic S1R2 compared to the SL3. I do not use High Speed Burst Mode for Photos and do like taking my time for the composition. I would like to see by turning on the camera how it performs to take that one shot in a life time or would it be better to have it on then let it go into Sleep Mode would be faster. SL3 has fixed the issue of placing the camera into Pause/Sleep Mode when pressing the power button. I do love my Q3 but it does have the 29 minute video record limit and of course the M8. Great time to be alive with all of the camera options that are available. Cheers!

The SL3-s does not have the fan from S5ii/X which allows indefinite recording. Who buys a Leica for video when Lumix does it better anyway plus all the accessories eg. Lumix XLR microphone adapter. 🤔

@@nocturnal1970 Bought the Sl2-S before the S5II. Then bought the S5IIX. Then 3 S9's. I only picked up the SL2-S about several times. I am thinking of getting rid of it with the Leica Lenses and just use Sigma and Lumix. Cheers!

I didn't test this but the Leica press release says no time limits but the manual says that the maximum length depends on ambient temperature and available storage space.

@@LeighAndRaymond Well Leica are contradicting themselves with that info. Maybe they are using the body as a heat sink but it couldn't be as good as the S5ii fan and who wants a hot sensor?

There’s a part of me that wanted to get the SL2-S before so I could use a FF with the M-Mount lenses and none of the hassle of the M body cameras. The L lenses just don’t appeal to me as they’re too large for my liking. Then, I take my Leica TL2 out for use and I just can’t find my own reasons to get that SL2-S…the TL2 is a fantastic camera in its own right. The SL3-S may change my mind eventually, I’ll have to give it a hands on try. Thanks for the video and info!

Thanks for this, Leigh. Informative and easy to understand as ever, I love my Q and my CL, but I am in awe of my SL2-S, so I think I’ll stick with it for the foreseeable future. But you never know when you’ll be hit by a dose of Gear Acquisition Syndrome! I hope to keep it at bay for a while! The SL3-S looks superb.

Enjoyed your video on Leica SLS-S would be interested to see how it does with action sports and I was curious I know you said you could bump up the megapixel to like 96 to shoot stills like landscape but I was wondering is that shooting in raw with the 96 megapixel or only jpeg ? 😊

Without super telephotos it can’t be a sports camera. It’s more of limited usage.

The High Resolution modes do create DNG (Raw) files! For action sports, so much of your success is dependent on photography knowledge, how well you know the camera and how practiced you are at following a subject. I've captured birds in flight with my SL2, which is significantly slower than the SL3-S. Of course, when I borrow the SL3-S again, I want to use it for fast-moving subjects!

At the beginning you mentioned talking about ‘who would use the SL3-S’, but I didn’t hear you discuss that… is this best for landscape, architecture, portraits, etc…?

This is a good all-around camera. It excels in genres like landscape, architecture and portraiture, but it can absolutely be used for sports and wildlife (but it is slower than purpose-built-for-fast-action cameras on the market).

Amen to the L-mount alliances ! It allowed me entrance to Leica when my finances prohibited purchase of their M cameras which I ultimately never gravitated to due to manual focusing which I’d had enough of in my early film days. I still own my early Pani-Leicas even though I’ve been fortunate to afford a few full on Leica digital cameras even though there is one or two Leica L lenses I’d like to own but those prices do make ones nose bleed ! 🤣 I absolutely love my L 35mm f/2 and 24-90mm.

How I love the Leica hype (irony may occur), because it's a bit like the Tesla hype, and obviously there are some camera reviewers who always give a slightly better rating because of the name and here also the price. It is gradually becoming difficult for me to take the Leica hype seriously when there are cameras that can do more for less money with much better autofocus, etc., so why not take us consumers a little more seriously in the future!

looks like much more expensive panasonic s5 ii with few minor upgrades and downgrades but on that price i expect something much much better.. at least sl3 have 60 mp sl3s looks like same sensor as panasonic s5ii...

There are similarities to the S5II but also differences. One standout difference is usability. I mention in the video, you have to get a camera in your hands to decide if it's the right one for you.
