Using the Power Probe Hook for parasitic drain tests

After having blown an embarrassing number of multimeter fuses because of a combination of stupidity and in line amp testing, I try to use inductive methods when possible. It's interesting to see the Hook can tolerate 65 amps in line, very impressive.

I liked that! I tend to hesitate using the meter inline, especially if IDK what the draw is. I like that ability to use the Hook in that manner. 👍👍

just rig up an inline fuse on a pair of alligator clamps and use a fuse smaller than your meter capacity

A current clamp designed to measure low currents is also an effective way of checking parasitic draw current without disconnecting the car battery or guessing by measuring the fuse volt drop. When you are down to a few milliamps parasitic currrent then trying to reliably measure the volt drop it is causing is hit and miss at the best of times.

Nice work Mario, good use of the hook. I haven’t played with my hook in a while, Can you turn off the sleeping feature for the overnight testing Or does it stay awake the whole time?

In power plus mode, it does stay awake. Don't think it consumes much though

Great tip! I never thought to use the hook for that. One question What does the hook draw? I’m assuming it’s ok to leave over night as you say in the video but curious if it will draw as well just being on.

If I'm not mistaken its 25 mA. Usually if I'm using it for a draw, it's likely that the battery won't make it overnight anyway, so as much as people advise against it, i leave a maintainer on the battery overnight

Custom tool. Got a long screwdriver from harbor freight, cut it and bent it

Good question, it does, but couldn't say how much. I've got some testing to do! If I remember correctly, power probe may have announced that infirmary, but I couldn't recall at the moment

Yes but you’re only concerned about what current is flowing through the tool. Any draw by the tool is going directly from the battery to the tool, so it won’t be measured.

Dunno if you mentioned it and i missed it but is the power probed being hooked up gonna show a draw? Like the tool its self is putting a draw on the system?

Yes, but it's not measured through the tool. So what's in the screen is strictly vehicle draw

For s decent one, expect to pay over 2-300. You're going to need a highly accurate clamp that will read in the milliamp range

single cell failed battery is almost always a battery defect. usually shorted plates. always good to check though.

This one had several bad cells! In the end of the day, anything to avoid a come back!

I’d like to have a low amp probe but people don’t usually understand what’s involved in chasing down a draw and don’t want to pay for the time required.

Listen to the video. I had already replaced the battery that had a bad cell in it
