To work well with a client, we need to establish rapport with them. Rapport is important, whatever model of counselling the counsellor is working with.
Rapport means a sense of having connection with the person.

Don't look listen , ask them what makes them feel comfortable

Autistic level 2 student and long-term client here. What really helps with me is to learn that I can trust my counsellor to be warm and congruent and honest and just to be there for me, and to be ok with communicating in whatever way is most comfortable for me rather than expecting me to sit still in a chair and make good eye contact. If they ask what makes me feel comfortable like CounsellingTutor has said, that reassures me that it's ok for me to 'drop the mask' and helps me to trust the counsellor and allows me to open up more. And when a counsellor is 'with me' enough to start to understand my quirky little metaphors or my different ways of communicating feelings, rapport builds massively and that feels really valuable because a lot of the time neurotypical people expect us neurodivergent people to communicate on their terms. So when someone makes a real effort to tune in to me where I'm at, it means a lot. I hope this helps and that it's been ok.
