Put rocks, or 1gallon bottles of sand or water in your solar oven during the Winter, Spring, or Fall to heat your home. Bring them in when they are saturated with the maximum temperature of your oven each one or two hours and replace with a new set of bottles or rocks until the sun goes down. Gear up with larger rocks or to 2.5 gallon bottles of sand or water and use several solar ovens during the day for more heat. When the rocks, or 1 gallon or 2.5 gallon bottles reach maximum temperature of your oven and fully saturated with heat bring them into your home. You can heat many rocks, 1 gallon bottles or 2.5 gallon bottles throughout the day to maximum temperatures in most solar ovens when turned every hour toward the sun. Sand seems to work best for me and is less messy but hot water is good too to bath and do dishes. -- J.E. Ante.

Thank you for sharing this idea. I have rescue kitties that prefer to stay in a screened area outside. I live in Florida so it rarely gets to cold but there are times when it gets chilly overnight. That would be a good way to offer them a affordable heat source. 👍🏻

Best wishes to you as well. Good luck with your cooker. I dont use mine very much. But it nice to know that I can and that it works. I really like using it for baked potatoes. It's so nice not to have to heat up the house from the oven in the Florida heat. Also nice that I have something to cook in should we go prolonged periods without electric. I learned my lesson back in 2017 with Hurricane Irma. We were out for almost two weeks and gas/charcoal was in short supply.

Ive cooked solar for three years, that chicken is mushy and dry. Cant cook meat seared and juicy on a solar oven. Need a vacuum tube or a large parabolic cooker to cook like a kitchen..

A full sized chicken will fit in the Dutch oven, without cutting the backbone out!

Thanks. I was just trying to try to spatchcock a chicken for the first time. I've never done that before and thought it looked interesting.

How long did it take to cook the chicken?

Hi, I cooked it about 4 hours. Honestly next time I will probably let it cook longer. I've heard that even if you over cook it won't be dry. It was done and very tender and juicy. I just over cook everything so my preference is a bit dryer (if that makes sence) I'm still experimenting and havent used it in awhile. I think the next time I'll just let it slow cook for 5 or 6 hrs and see what happens 😁

how many hours did you end up cooking the chicken?

It was some time ago but I think the last time I spoke was 12:30. Then I cut my grass which roughly takes me about an hour. So a good guesstimate would be 4 to 4 1/2 hours. To be honest if I were to cook another chicken I'd probably let it cook longer. It was done but not done enough for my paranoia. I've seen some things that say cooking in it longer times will not result in dry meat like an oven would. I'd probably just let it cook maybe a couple more hours like 6. But that's just my preference. The covered pot seems to keep the moisture in. I havent used my solar cooker for some time. I really should play with it some more. I will say it is most definitely a viable tool for camping or in the event of an emergency. Hope this helps.

@@matilda4903 thank you! did you find the plastic bag helped or is it unnecessary? I will be trying mine out for the first time cooking bread. then i'll def try a chicken.

@@kalijuri from what I've seen. You either need the bag or you can use like two large pyrex glass bowls to make like a bubble to put your pan into. I don't think you are suppose to just use a pan by itself.

@@kalijuri this I think is the guy that makes the particular solar cooker I have . I think you need the bag or the two bowls to create the heat and contain it for cooking.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Znq0eZx8pceGn7s

Lol, you know that's a good question. I never really thought about it till you just brought it up. Those oven bags that you cook with in the oven dont melt either 🧐
