Using TNG eWallet (Alipay+) in Japan: Better than TNG Visa, GXBank, BigPay and Wise?

We recently visited Tokyo to find out if you can go completely cashless in Japan with the Touch 'n Go eWallet. Thanks to the Alipay+ network, TNG eWallet is now accepted by over 2 million merchants in Japan. But is it better than using other payment cards such as TNG Visa, GXBank, BigPay and Wise? Can you create a new Suica card on the iPhone?

lol I was just in Japan. There was food fair at Ueno park that was using paypay and I didn’t know I could use it.

Yup. The cashback covers retail and online spend even for overseas. Cashback is not provided for excluded transactions which include topping up ewallet, govt services, cash withdrawal, insurance and donation/charity to organisations.

Nope. We only used tng ewallet, tng visa, wise, bigpay and gxbank during this trip.

Yes you can if the merchant accepts Mastercard/visa.

If it is a Japanese-released model, it should have. Do check the official spec sheet for the Japanese model for your device.

1% is only for credit card reloads. Reloads by bank transfers and duitnow are free, similar bigpay and wise.

Bank rates for international transactions are typically higher. Usually you won’t know the actual currency exchange rates until it’s reflected in the transaction history.
