I have a short grey beard. I initially used half a dropper from a two-ounce bottle. Despite having a good diet and staying hydrated, my beard would dry out after a few hours. I've now increased the amount of oil to three-quarters of a dropper from the same two-ounce bottle, and I'm using a more significant amount of balm, going from a small amount the size of a fingernail to a more significant amount the size of a thumbnail. So far, I'm pleased with the results of increasing the oil and balm and how that has improved the look and feel of my beard.

Easy to apply too much when you love the scent. It's like overspraying perfume if the want the scent to last longer throughout the day. Difference is, the oil doesn't dry out like perfume does. And your beard is left greasy with a little shine to it. Luxurious Bastard, Kingsmen and The Bearded bastard solves that problem though because of their bold scents so you don't need that much.

I might add, depends on what viscosity the oil is, I use less of heavier castor based oils. Even though I’m at 6” my beard drinks up about a full dropper. If I over do my measurement with a restrictor top I put that oil to use on my neck and tattoos. I have a good friend that is using more then me and has a even shorter beard. Porosity is a very real thing. Great video Dan.

When you run your hands through should they come back completely “dry” or should it feel like a like your forehead before your shower? I have a 3 1/2” goatee. My sides don’t grow in fully but I am giving that a go too. I use about 6-8 drops of thicker beard oil. If I put it in at about 8:30am I usually get the dry feeling by about 3:00-4:00pm. Is that normal? I also use 4-5 drops at night.
@DanCBearded

You don't want your hand to have oil on it, that is an easy tell of using too much. Not using enough is tougher side to tell. If it feels like straw, feels itchy, or hurts a little, you probably did not use enough

Just found your channel - subscribed - great video. Length: Short - about 4". Amount of oil: 5-7 drops (but only about 1 or 2 times a week currently). Experience: Just retired and decided to see how long I can grow my beard - cause I can. I've never had more than a 1" or 2" beard length before - usually was just a goatee, so just trying to learn how to live with a longer beard - I might go all ZZ Top - just because I can. (Thankfully my wife is supportive). I appreciate the practical advice - I'll give the 30 minute test a try as my beard length increases.

Excellent video mate. My beard is 5” straight down. I use about 10 drops that seems to do the trick. I figured out the use in moderation from not really knowing a few years back and would use a whole dropper. Was a nightmare every time I would take a call my cell would be all oily and if I touched my beard oily mitts. So like you said trial and error. I halved the dropper and that was still a bit too much so I kept halving until my beard was happy. And with the increase in length of my beard now I’m at ten drops or there abouts. Great seeing you mate speak soon. Jax.

1.) 👍 2.) 5"-6" 3.) Make sure that your really working the oil into your skin so. If its just the surface of your beard the oil is on then you may be using the right amount of oil but it may appear to be too much since the oil may stay on the surface of your beard. Also, if your beard is too wet when applying the oil; you may be using the right amount but since oil is more dence than water, your oil may ware off faster or may not absorb at all into your skin. Alot of factors to consider when using beard oil. Keep notes to give you an idea of how much oil you used "quarter rule", how dry was your beard when you applied it, and also the greeseiness test after 30 minutes. Awesome video Dan! 👊

Excellent work, Dan! Curly White 4" beard. 6 or 7 drops. Another check: I apply drops to my fingers, and rub them together. After spreading the oil on my skin and beard, my fingers may feel a bit oily, but not look oily or greasy. Comb down touching skin all the way, up, then down again but straight down past jawline. Acetate (Kent) comb should show no oil. Wood comb may benefit from rubbing between fingers or palms, and again no oily look or feel. I figure anything left on my hands or comb was too much for my beard.

I have a 7 inch beard oil. I typically use 8-12 drops in the morning and before bed. I am finding that different oils absorb differently in my beard. Current favorite is Beard Octane which definitely tends to absorb better into my beard and I may use a little to much.

Bryan here, founder of High Mountain Sage. My beard is 5 inches right now when straightened. I will do roughly 10 to 12 drops of our beard oil. I think one thing to consider is what carrier oils are in the oil. Some will absorb more quickly while others won't. I definitely like the idea of doing the 30 minute test for each carrier oil blend just to see how each absorb. Great video Dan C.

I have a 8 inch yeard and make my own oil and butter... Through trial and error I use one dropper of oil... Day or night then cap it with my shea butter, Lanolin based beard butter mix... The lanolin sucks up oil and gives my beard a wonderful silky feel... And leaves a nice non greasy feel... You have to try lanolin to appreciate it. Can also mix with beeswax for more hold... But a little wax is all you need!

@@DanCBearded I've found that about 8-10 drops seems to be about the right amount. It may seem like that is still a bit much, but I live in a drier climate, and it seems to absorb pretty well. It also depends on the brand. My beard seems to love Whisky n Hardtack, it soaks right up! Thanks for the information and the loads of content Dan C, you're a champion! :D

Been trial and erroring my amount, and I have overdone it a few times, but it's because my beard is very thirsty. I have resorted to viewing it like adding salt to a recipe(adding about 7 drops at first), utilizing the Dan C method, and adding about 5 more in a half hour. So about 12 drops total, but not all at once so I don't wind up greasy. As always, thank you for the guidance Teach! God Bless and Beard On!

Currently at a 5" beard. I haven't done the test, but going off this I am definitely using too much. There have been times I fined it excessively oily, especially when using oil and balm or butter together. Going to have to tone it down a notch and try out the oil test and see if I can't dial it in better!

I have a seven inch beard of mostly (75%) gray but have black and blonde hair interspersed throughout. Because of the lack of cuticles on the gray hair, they soak up the lighter oils readily. But the heavier oils, remain on my beard longer. That being said, my baseline is one full dropper but that can change depending on the oil blends and always involves trial and error. I walk the line.

Hi Dan, I’ve often wondered about how much beard oil to use. When my beard was short I didn’t use any. At yeard length about half a dipper would do. Currently the beard is 18 inches long and it takes a full dropper or about two nickel size shakes from a restricted bottle. Of course all beard oil is not the same so there is some variation in these measurements and frequency of application. And yes trial and air is how I figured this out. The amount of oil to maintain a long beard at first caught me off guard. I have not trimmed my beard in about three years and it is still growing. The goal is terminal length. I may have to buy a share in a beard product company to maintain this lifestyle. Thanks for the great content.

My beard is some were in the three to five area. I use about a dropper full, but like you I use last what I'm using honest Amish. If I'm putting beer jelly then I'll do about a nickel-size. another way you can tell throughout the day if you have too much product is after making a phone call and then looking at your screen and noticing some oily spots.

My shirts have been stained like crazy and it took me a while to realize they were all getting stained by my beard oil. Definitely using too much but I kept feeling like I needed for my precious beard, I honestly don't need the test. I already know because throughout the day I feel end up spreading oil to my devices. Gonna try reducing it but I always feel like its not enough. You reminded me though, less is more.

I’m about half a dropper. But my beard is also one that really absorbs well. I have fairly coarse hair. Because of this I can trick myself into over oiling because how well it will take the first round of oil. But after I blow dry I might take 2 or 3 drops more and just hit the outside again to get it good. No more or it’s a mess. Great video Dan.
