Couple quick notes, make sure you have the piece set on the bottom before you let it go, that minimizes the risk of splash. Also, acid will eat metal. Plastic will last longer. Well, the right kind of plastic LOL! You definitely take more precaution than I do, which is probably a good thing. I work with HCl at work so I'm used to the stuff. Hahaha you're gonna feel that yellow stuff on your fingers! A good rule is "if it wasn't yellow when it went in, it shouldn't be yellow when it's done". Any residual yellow is residual acid. Unless you're cleaning certain hematite, then you can generate limonite. Good stuff man! Nice addition to the fleet too!

Great results. I have used that brand of acid and it does a fine job. I was wondering though how much baking soda do you put in your soaking water? I have cut Geodes from Kentucky and southern Indiana that due to iron content in the soils, are often full of reddish muck and I power wash them thoroughly and then soak a couple of days in an Iron Out solution to turn them white. Great results. Keep the videos coming!

Omg, Kip was your assistant! Love it! So glad you are taking precautions. You can soak longer and neutralize it with baking soda water. I use baking soda to clean my tub with a brush. It may help. Power washing also may work, to get the rest of the junk off. The kayak is a great addition.

Quick question when you take the rocks etc out of the acid and place in water with baking soda ? My question is how long to I let them sit in the baking soda mix after the acid bath? Thanks I’m learning and having fun . I set up my workstation down in basement for the winter
@AgateAngler4 жыл бұрын
I mean, technically you don't have to do it for too long, but I erred on the side of caution and let them sit in there for at least an hour.

The water bath should already have baking soda in it to Neutralize the acid, not just dilute.

The water is more than sufficient. It's not like it's a concentrated acid, and it was rinsed in a volume of water sufficient to radically alter ph on it's own to a safe level.

@gigib333byars94 жыл бұрын
Muriatic acid is something you used to make a salt pool pH balance so it makes sense that it will clean the calcification that builds up on the rock. It's dangerous but it's not that dangerous people use it everyday to pour into their pools.

If you would like something not as toxic try some cleaning vinegar. It is 10% acid instead of 5% for household vinegar. It is much easier to handle. It is somewhat slower but still does the trick. My rock club in Nevada put me on tho this, You may still use HCA if it is really tough to clean. I also use citric acid for scum and Iron Outfor metal stains. I buy cleaning vinegar at some Walmarts. Havgudun my friend.

@K4SWX2 жыл бұрын
Baking soda will neutralize the acid. Hcl isn't all that toxic. Yes always use gloves and eye protection but theses been times I've stuck my hand in a bucket full to grab a specimen with no damage to my hand. This acid is also diluted with water. It reacts to any carbonate materials like concrete calcites limestone ect. Quartz agates anything non carbonate is safe to be in it and it's also best to use hot water with the acid..
@1stladydjfirebird7244 жыл бұрын

I'm getting excited again. We can't use acids here in New Zealand so I've been making my own but I've put baking soda in the mix and wondered why not much happens haha my next round is a citrus 'acid' 😅. These came up really good, that sparkle sure is something else. does it matter which way the geodes are facing when laying in the acid/cleaner?

Good questions. I do not think orientation matters as long as the whole rock is covered. Thanks for watching.
@trippingonrocks11654 жыл бұрын
@h2s what do you mean no science allowed. Because here in New Zealand we're a little island and people dumping acids down the drains and in our waterways it causes alot of damage to us as a whole.

I know absolutely nothing about anything in your videos... well, outside of dogs, so forgive my ignorance. When you’re talking about anything such as the acid bath, can you give specific details? I think I picked up 20 minutes... maybe 40 minutes? You stated you’d alter something... now I cannot remember what that was but I do remember wondering ‘how’ you would alter it. Really enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing them! A dear friend of mine sent me your last video as we’re both interested in the simple beauty of rocks... So glad she did. She and I are both ‘up’ there in age... it’s refreshing to see your youthful, wholesome, enthusiasm over the simple joys of life... even more so today.

Hey I just stumbled upon your video as I just recently purchased some muriatic acid and was wondering how long did you leave them in the acid bath for?? Did you just wing it or did you figure out a systematic amount of time it took to achieve a good amount of gunk gone?? Thanks in advance ~K~

@jaredmitchell13024 жыл бұрын
So those tongs and table were rusted days later. And the user friendly acid just means they diluted it with water for you as the more concentrated solution is meant to have water added for most uses.

Wow my dear Great video...
@robertmandigo79424 жыл бұрын
How about calling the kayak the SS AGATE. That acid will will take the paint off that table also if you didn't, you need to add baking soda to the water in the pail to help neutralize the acid faster also the acid will seep out of the rocks so soak them in the water longer then they were in the acid. I would use about a quarter cup of baking soda per gallon of water and then rinse the rocks with water.

I was shocked you didn't have your baking soda bath set up at the start & only used water. Plus metal & acid bet the tongs have a few black areas now. You did say you were going to put some pants on yet you had shorts on bare skin & acid don't mix. A tip next time you do it turn the rock ever 20mins & leave in for an hour. My thinking is that the areas that didn't get fully clean were on the bottom of the jug & very little acid got trapped under the rock & base of the rock. Next time you do it bring acid bath as close to the edge of the table as you can this way there is less chance of acid drips on the tablet floor or you.
