The data geek bits are great. You've got a lovely balance of footage, commentary and analysis. Oh, and drama with Kelly. I find that over a net-flat course I get similar HR over pace, whether hilly or flat, just higher max on hilly but then recovery in downhill. It's a great metric to compare watts or pace against HR, and lovely to see it inching in the direction of fitter! Garmin vo2max predictor is similar though and saves me the maths. I don't trust the absolute number but there trend is worth following.
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. I’m glad you think the balance is okay. I agree that following the trend on Garmin is better than taking the absolute value as gospel.

Thanks Paul. Yes the fitness is coming and I am feeling stronger every week. Patience and discipline will be key so hopefully the accountability of vlogs will keep me in check as well as Kelly's advice. Yeah I mainly forefoot strike unless I am very fatigued. Another great video. Love the interactions between you and Kelly. 🤣And the geeky bits. Power to HR ratio. Will have to give that one a look. Why do you prefer the Stryd vs using the Garmin power that is already built into the HRM? Is it worth the additional $200+.
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ted. I am glad you enjoyed the video. My initial reason was that Stryd takes into account wind and air resistance which I think is fairly important, especially at race paces. Also I trust the Stryd values more than Garmin. The Stryd had some excellent reviews and the fact it is on the foot makes the power estimates seem to be more consistent than the Garmin ones. Stryd does not rely on GPS for the power it can be used in poor signal (bridges/cities/forests etc). I am still not 100% how the Garmin calculates power. A great comparison of the technologies was presented by Alex Hutchinson www.outsideonline.com/2413011/running-power-meter-comparison-study. I think Stryd is definitely worth £200. These days that is less than a racing shoe but will last many thousands of miles of training and racing. However, don't get me started on how bad it is on the treadmill. The owners of Stryd will tell you differently but I have found it to be very poor on the treadmill.
@Teddy_J3 жыл бұрын
@@TheWelshRunner Thanks for the info. Do you have the Stryd send the pace and distance info to your Garmin or do you have the watch rely on GPS for that. Then just look over the Stryd data separately.

I have an older version of stryde, dont use it anymore. The new edition also takes head and tailwind into account? In the Netherlands its mainly flat as a pancake, maybe you can use it on a Hilly (marathon) course and run by watt. Next year i m probably run a marathon in Switserland . You think that could work? Thanks! Enjoyed the vlog.
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
Yes the new version takes into account wind and air resistance which is one of the reasons I got one. I think Stryd would be perfect for a hilly marathon because it stops you from overlooking the hills early in the race. I always feel great early on and might not back off enough an any climbs. 👍

Well in mate! What do you mean by the GAP pace? I have that on my Strava but unsure of the meaning.
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
GAP is Grade Adjusted Pace. So it works out what you would be running in theory if it was flat. So when you run uphill your GAP will be faster and when you run downhill the opposite.

How long before the vaporflys lose that pop and become session shoes Matt?
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
Difficult to put a number on it. They are still so good after I’ve started training in them. I think a lot of it is psychological that I want a new pair for an A goal race. I would probably retire them after a training block where they have perhaps done a few races including the marathon but they are good for so much longer. I’m still wearing the pink pair I had for Frankfurt in 2019.

Do you wear a heart rate monitor or is your heart rate all wrist based?
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
Connor James wrist heart rate is awful so I completely disregard wrist measurements and always wear a chest strap. I have recently bought the polar arm strap too which had great reviews from DC Rainmaker and is turning out to be a great option too. But I’ve seen way too much unreliable and often inaccurate wrist stuff to ever trust it.
@connorjames93463 жыл бұрын
@@TheWelshRunner thank you. Would you recommend running on feel and pace or buying a heart rate monitor? It's nice to see a Welsh KZbinr! 👍🏻 (I'm Welsh too)
@TheWelshRunner3 жыл бұрын
Connor James I would recommend all of those things. I run to feel a lot but I like to have the data to track and check afterwards. I run to pace sometimes. I run to HR sometimes. There is no perfect way to do it but what is important is that you do some running easy enough and some running faster. Trying to understand what you are doing and why really helps. I love HR data but you can get fit without any data too.
