I started my wicking with coolers that I picked up off the curb years ago when I first saw your wicking tub tutorials. Availability was my first consideration, then i quickly reasoned that insulated coolers are going to keep the soil cooler and should require less watering than tubs. Year before last year, i bought some of those porous pots that claim to grow a more productive plant by air pruning the roots. And they may....IF you want to stand over them with a water hose 24/7. Then I saw a Florida girl that set them in a kiddy pool and that works. Then last year, I bought several $1 Dollar Tree clothes hampers and lined them with weed block which worked out great. I presume the weed block will have the same root pruning effect. They were still viable, and I used them again this year. But again, you need some kind of reservoir to set them in. I have 3 kiddy pools and a plethora of other reservoirs that I also picked up off the curb.

Thank you, Leon, for caring about our planet, and for teaching viewers practical resources. Each month I have to buy a couple of 50 lb bags of feed for our chickens, so I've started saving them to plant potatoes in. I expect that will save me $10 for each container I would have needed to buy otherwise, because I have to container garden since I am wheelchair bound now. I love gardening, and I don't want to give it up.

Starting my Sunday morning off with Leon and coffee with my windows open. Its gonna be a good day! ❤️ Ive also got some wicking 5gal buckets going already. So far my plants are doing FAB! Never done it before and I am so glad I found ya, Leon! Its gonna save my spine, hips, and knees this year! ❤️❤️

I put 1 tomato in that bigger size blue cooler you showed. Of course, it's not as productive as a larger container, but if it's what you have and tomatoes is what you want, it will grow you SOME tomatoes.

Question... I live in central Arizona where it's well over 100° for 4 months. I'm thinking the pipes to bottom makes sense. I just drug a few coolers home from neighbors trash. I also use an old refrigerator. However..I punched holes in the bottom for drainage. Need to get another couple of them. Can you do a segment on using old refrigerators??? Learning a lot for you,!! Gardening here is a real challenge!!!!!

It would be nice if you could design and produce a tub insert like the GroBucket folks. It would eliminate the weedcloth and drainpipe AND potentially increase the water reservoir. Something to consider...

well sir;;;thank you for shegaring;;;;i'm already doin your methods of wicking;;;lol;;;;three coolers;;;;two totes and abunch of five gal buckets;;;;;my problem this year is plants;;;have grow warmer grow lights and potting mix but not plants;;; well;;;a few peppers but no maters;;lettuce;;;greens;;;used this years seeds from big box store;;had to purchase plants;;;selection is limited;;;fixin to replant maters and peppers;;;;;way late I know but can''t find plants i want for growing;;;not going to waste water this year for limited harvesting like this last summer;;;the only nice thing was I didn't have to cook my peppers cause they cooked on the vine;;lol;;;another good one for ecology sit;;;;thanks;;;a big thumbs up and keep em comin

Hemp twine works well for wicking.

Ooops. Wrong type wicking. Candle wicks can be hemp twine.

💜Planted tomatoes and peppers in 5 gallon wicking tubs last year. Not sure how to get them ready to replant this year? All the videos I see are about first time use of these “tubs”. Thanks💜

Ok I followed that, but why don't you need a pipe to the outside in both jugs? I'm still trying to understand how the system works as I certainly want to do this.

I am a bit confused. If you put a pipe in one of the jugs aren't we just filling that one up with water? So why add more than one jug in the bottom?

I am confused, the potting mix goes around the jugs to the bottom of the container? Always used a barrier between the top and bottom reservoir before, and used slender jugs for wicking.

Hi Mr Leon, I'm trying your method for the first time. I have everything you add to the mix except gypsum. I can't find anything that says 100 percent gypsum on it. I've looked at our Lowe's and walmart. You may have done this in a past video but can you please tell me or show the container of the gypsum product you use?

I cover my pipes with a soup can. We have lizards and those frogs with the suction toes.

Yep You are right .... The bugs are bugging some of us. Aphids to mosquitos and Fungus gnats to Hornworms. It's a buggy world out there. 🐛🐜🐝🪲🐞🦗🪳🕷🦟🪰🪱🦠🦋🐌
