Extremely informative, especially when it comes to using can in terms of general possibilities. This topic had bothered me in the past. I remember when it all started with the following sentence: "Answer the phone, it might be Tom." - why on earth not in the following way: "Answer the phone, it can be Tom." Now I know: the sentence is a great example of a very specific possibility.

Could is also the past tense of semi-modal 'can'. I could speak French when I was little. I can't do that now. It's about ability and in this case 'could' is used as a past version of 'can'. It's obviously for students but not generally, I think it would have been better if the lesson had had the explanation from this point of view. All in English depends on context, especially the meaning of modal verbs. But It's still the best explanation ever!
@Oxfordonlineenglish1
@Oxfordonlineenglish1 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, and it's a good point, but in my experience, students get confused when you talk about modal verbs having past forms. 'Could' can be a past tense of 'can', but only in specific situations. I think it's better to focus on the meaning you're trying to express and choose the appropriate modal verb, but different perspectives can work for different people :)

The only thing I would distinguish is that "could" and "might" might have different meanings - for example, "They could be brothers; they look so alike!" (they COULD be, but I know they aren't) or "They might be brothers; they look so alike!" (I think they really might be).

10:53 There are two kinds of possibilities in the past. *One* - you don't know what happened and you're making a guess. *Two* - you know what happened and you're talking about a possibility which didn't occur. Ok. I get it with *modal verbs* but which *conditional* should I use in order to show *the first one?* As I know the third conditional tells about the second one. "If she had passed her exams that day, she would have a lot of money now." - Mixed of the third and the second (Unreal) (We know she didn't pass her exams) "If she passed her exams that day, she has a lot of money now." (real - past - present) - different meaning (We don't know whether she passed her exams or not). It doesn't fit to any of conditionals: zero, first, second, third, mixed. Some more examples: If they met each other, they probably got married. (past - past) If he was with her that night we went away, I will definitely kill him when I see him again. (past - future) If she didn't choose this way, we won't meet her when we get there. (past - future) If she chose the other way, she may have met wolves. (past - past) If he stole the money, he will leave the country soon. (past - future)

Glad you enjoyed the lesson. Good question, when you use 'can' this means she has the ability to, because we can have the ability to have certain emotions. When you use 'might' or 'may' this means it's a general possibility outside of the person. When you say 'It can't be wet in the winter' this means there is one specific situation and reason why the place doesn't have the ability to be wet. It's not a general idea. Hope that helps!

it takes 2 mos for me ..how to use the (could,migth,should,would, have+past participle) past possibilities..in the past correctly ..infact lot of learners always get confused about them. aND LOT OF VEDEOS WHICH TALKING ONLY ABOUT THE UNREAL SITWATION AND THEY NOT INCLUDED THE POSSIBILITIES. therefore as we want to use them possibilites in the past which. we can confused constantly. coz we only just know the unreal situation .and not the possibilities. I WANT TO SAY .WHICH TO ALL LEARNERS, THAT DON'T STOP TRIYING TO TEACH OURSELVES IN ENGLISH. NO ONE ELSE COULD HELP US. BUT ONLY OURSELVES . THANK U FOR THIS VEDEO. ITS BEEN 2MOS SINCE I BEGAN STUDIYING ENGLISH .BY MYSELF. ..FROM ZERO TO INTERMIDIATE.
