There are 6 versions of the Wii. 1. White: Gamecube compatible 2. Original Black: GC compatible 3. New Black: Not compatible No ports on top for controllers or memory. 4. Red: GC compatible. 5. Blue: Not compatible. No ports on top for controllers or memory. 6. Wii Mini: Not compatible. Another thing not mentioned. There are 3 connection options. Composite, component and HDMI with an adapter.

You are right my friend. The Wii can play GC games because the Wii is actually an enhanced GameCube with better processor and motion controllers. Therefore there is no emulation.

@@DoubbleDdragon The PS2 has the PS1 cpu present on its motherboard (it is used as the IO coprocessor when running PS2 games), not sure if it also has the PS1 GPU (maybe some of its functionalities are built into the Graphics Synthetiser). The PS2 therefore should run nearly all PS1 games like original hardware. The PS3 is running PS1 games through emulation, so it must be less compatible (I don't know if it is my copy of the game but Wip3out runs flawlessly on PS1 and PS2 but freezes on PS3)

Well done! Thanks for the video. This is something Nintendo should have advertised more and it is something I have been doing for years. Also, a big plus for us US Wii owners is that the Wii component cables are MUCH less expensive than the Gamecube component cables. In some cases you can buy a whole first generation Wii system to play both Wii and Gamecube games for the price of the Gamecube component cables alone! This means, via the component cable people can finally play Gamecube (and Wii) games in beautiful and clear 480p and this looks fantastic on modern HDTVs! Again thank you and keep up the great work.

I like the GameCube better than Wii’s backwards compatibility, because you have to use motion controls every time you want to start a game. You have to get out the wiimote and the GameCube controller. You also have to make sure the wiimote has batteries. Another thing is that the picture of the game isn’t shown on the menu (if you forgot which game you had in the Wii). It just says Nintendo GameCube instead, without the amazing startup animation.

Not if you own a classic controller. The sensor bar doesn't pick it up but the pointer acts as a computer mouse instead of the regular infrared pointer that shakes around.

Yeah really. The wii has a really wide variety of awesome games. Yes it has tons of shovelware and sucky titles, but if you dig a little you will see it has its own awesome library of games, plus the Gamecube library if its the backwards compatible version.

you can also use the gamecube microphone (memory card slot) and donkey kong bongos (controller slot) on the wii too for the cube games :) plus you can use the cube controllers for a bunch of wii games (smash, mario kart, dbz budokai 3, goldeneye, conduit, klonoa, ...)

I got two Star Wars games on the GameCube for Christmas, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 and LEGO Star Wars 2 as well as a GameCube controller and I'm gonna play them on my Wii. But I couldn't find one of the cables for the Wii so my dad ordered one on Amazon so i'll be a few days late to play my games. I actually had quit a lot of fun with the wii back in the day with the no more heroes games, Mario Galaxy games, Wario Land, Deadly Creatures, and Pandoras Tower being a few games that stand out in my memory although i'm only just starting to seriously collect for the wii and game cube.

Also on top of what +modegy mentioned another really cool thing about the wii that you did halfway cover is how it handles backwards compatability which you mentioned was hardware based not emulation. Something really cool you failed to go into though is that it's not just a cheaper smaller version of the origonal hardware but rather that the wii hardware itself is built around origonal gamecube hardware with the wii origonal hardware being equivalent to the amount of non genesis hardware in a genesis 32x. Great video otherwise :)

I think now you can use the memory card on soft modded Wii to store GC save files there... I even saw a tutorial on where to turn that option on. I think you just need a bigger memory card for it to work, but apparently it works.

Here is another way to check if your Wii is compatible with GameCube try to open the top there should be 4 ports and 2 memory card ports if not then that sucks. Also look in the manual because the Wii manual refers to the GameCube comparability so

RVL-001 came in white, black, and limited edition red. RVL-101 came in white (jpn), black, and blue. look at the front of your wii if the wii symbol is shown correctly standing up by the eject button then thats the RVL-001. if the the wii symbol on the front is shown correct while laying down beneath the SD card slot then that the RVL-101 model.

A warning to owners of both a GameCube and a Wii: switching memory cards from one system to the other can corrupt them, even official Nintendo memory cards. This happened to my brother recently. He lost his Windwaker save. I recommend having a separate memory card s for both systems

the whole reason i bought my wii in 2009 was to play gamecube on it since my original gamecube loves freezing on game swell certain ones like super monkey ball 2 and had issue with reading disks. If I remember correctly, the GameCube freeloader disc doesn't work on the Wii if you want to play imports. I remember a patch coming out some time after launch that made the disc unusable. It's definitely a must GameCube accessory for playing outside your region unless your console is modded.

Umm is there a way to fix the issue of the PSM (Proggresive Scan Mode)? Like, for example what if activating this make yout TV goes crazy and glitchy in the video? I put after market gamecube controller and it got stuck in my wii GC controller port broke controller getting it out, The after market controller cord sucked as it was too short I am now going to buy extension cord so if it gets stuck again I will lose $5.50 rather than $15.00 :( This is the first time any console I ever owned needed pliers to put out controller from socket :( I wonder if you have any idea about running extension cord then a converter cord to convert ps2 controller to GC controller? So Pro tip if you buy after market controller your going to need extension cord and try that first in case you did like I did and broke controller instead of getting out pliers first time.

Since you are still on the Wii menu you need the remote to click start. After you press start, plug in the GameCube controller then you're done. It's that simple.

Im having trouble with my Wii. It’s a RVL-001 so it plays GameCube. I just got sonic heroes and I was very excited and I played the first level of the game it worked fine. Then all of a sudden it pops up black screen saying error. It just happens randomly in every level and boss, it’s nearly impossible to get through one level without that stopping me. I’ve tried restarting, cleaning the Wii and disc, and putting a cd with a brush in the console to clean the inside, what should I do? Can anyone help?

Your disc could be permanently damaged, I have smash bros brawl and once I get to a certain level I just says there was error and I have to reset the Wii. Each time I go back to that level it says the same thing, so that means my disc is probably broken. It could be the same thing happening to you.

I bought a Gamecube because it was actually the cheepest way to get a Gamecube controller from the store that I bought it from because the Gamecube controller was the same price as a Gamecube with a controller. ($20). lol I'm not sure if they were aware of that. But I primarily use the Wii to play GC games because the Wii component cables are cheeper and make the games look great on an HD TV. Component cables for the GC are insanely expensive and the standard composite cables make the games look blurry.
