Only thing I would add......candle lantern. Light and heat for inside the tent.....minimum 10 degree boost from just 1 candle.

Excellent. You’re absolutely right in choosing to bring a real tent with you, instead of playing boyscout with tarpology in the middle of an emergency situation. And that tent is so compact there is no excuse not to carry it. Keep up the good work!

Nice video man. Now about Shovel, I am happy that you picked one and its not just for snow. It has many uses. Build traps, extinguish a fire, cover it, create a canal for rain water, it can be usefull in shelter building and also can help with hygiene issues. Lets be honest, you need to have tools in your bug out bag people. Reliable tools. Expensive ones. You need to have good quality tools because they will affect your survival chance out there. You dont want to have cheap items which will get snapped easily...

Great to see someone else using TWO spoons. Always tell folk to take a metal spoon or spork with them and a spare plastic spoon just in case they lose the main eating iron and could be above the tree line or not have the time /knife to carve a replacement.

This is the only pack I use the only problem is when it gets cold it gets stiff, problem with zippers and buckles a little Vaseline helps with those issues also I keep a waterproof cover over my pack and everything in my pack is in some type of waterproof container or bag You will never be able to fit everything you need in your pack that's why I have a harness connected to homemade sled to pull all my gear

Thanks for making the video. I'm currently stuck in SD in blizzard. This video motivated me to go through my bags on board big rig truck. It's -13, the winds been blowing all day and all night. And, I 90 is closed. I'm super glad I have fuel, food and money. I have been prepping for a long time but believe me no one would survive outside currently. You would have to have strong shelter from this blizzard. The point is, planning ahead is the key. I wonder what Indians an old time pioneers did ? I guess bugging out would be dangerous in winter.

All you have to do is stay dry, I spent all last winter bugged out and in my hammock. The cold isn't hard to deal with if you pack sufficient sleeping bag, until it gets wet.. Move slow, don't sweat, surround shelter with tarps to keep out snow and wind, prepare to be very bored.. stay in bed essentially except to aquire and cook food/ water and to use bathroom. I'd bring a waterproof folding solar panel and hang it outside on the surfacing side of the shelter. If you use a clear tarp on the sun facing side and a thermal layer on the opposite interior side it will help with heat, the sun will come in and reflect off the mylar and heat the interior several degrees. You're going to stink. A bar of soap with a lightly damp cloth to clean the nasty bits will prevent rash. Dig a hole and put in a garbage bag, add warmed water and a bit of soap suds to wash underwear and inner shirt in, make sure you have a stable fire to dry out. My charcloth tin is filled with clear garbage bags and mylar blankets used for these purposes to go along with my main tarp

I also like having in my pack some body glide anti-chafing stick. Unless you're constantly doing ruck marches, you'll be surprised how fast you'll chafe. And that really sucks if you have to keep moving.

Add a multi fuel camp stove and fuel bottles with hand pump. Its small enough to pack and runs on common fuels such as gasoline ect. Use for heating your tent and for cooking. Light it up while under your poncho in an emergency such as after falling into a river in freezing temps and it will save your life.

when it's cold, I wear the bugnet suits and the camo nets as "longjohns". If I'll be hiking and it's really cold, I'll first wrap myself in the net hammock and then don the other stuff. If I add dry debris between the bugnet suits and under the wraps of camo net (this time outside of the cammies) I can gain 10F degrees of warmth. This stuff is unaffected by its getting wet. I can wear the tyvek bivy as a poncho. and keep the cammies (mostly) dry from rain or wet brush. The netting holds my cammies away from my body, letting my sweat evaporate without wetting the cammies, If the cammies DO somehow get wet, the netting wont let the moisture touch me. I can remove the camies, wrap up in the netting, be inside of the bivy, and its plastic "envelope" as I wring out the cammies and either start a fire to dry them out, or hike to where I can do so. Since my spare socks are up on my shoulder hanness and the 3rd drum liner The spare boxers and T shirt can be wrapped in the PEVA , they are unlikely to get wet. I carry a set of water sandals and use them as slippers around camp. So I can have dry socks and footwear if my shoes get wet. If I KNOW I have to walk thru water, I'll just put my shoes around my neck by their laces and wear the sandals. I'd rather have dry socks and shoes to don after I cross the wet area. I can tolerate the feet being wet and cold for say, 10 minutes. If it's REALLY cold, the water will be ice, eh? I have a way to dry out wet debris, without having an open fire, but it takes all night. This is given an amount of debris useable as insulation between the bugnet suiits and the camo nets wrapped around myself. If I have a LOT of dry debris, I can sleep at 10F degrees colder temps, without a heat source, by stuffing debris between the bivy and its plastic "envelope.

I have a 5 lb set up of bug net "suits", camo nets, reflective tyvek bivy, 3 drum liners, a hunk of clear PEVA shower curtain, some stakes, cordage and tape, which lets me handle 34F, high winds and rain., in just cammies, with 1.5 lbs of gloves, balaclava, sock-liners, unlaced shoes, and shemagh. 1.5 lbs of clothing, I use a 1 lb buttpack, 1.5 lb of daypack. 1.5 lb reflective tyvek bivy, 1 lb net hammock, I had to add a much wider, stiffer belt to the buttpack. My spare boxers and t-shirt are my hip pads. My spare socks are my shoulder pads. Any unused clothing and the sleep/shelter gear get lashed to the top of the buttpack and the daypack rides on that gear. I empty the packs, stuff them with debris and use them as sleeping pads, normally up in the hammock. If it's cold, I set the hammock 6" off of the ground, with me in it. Then I kick debris under the hammock so as to stop air flow. I can use the UCO lantern, its beeswac candle and calisthenics to get thru a night a 20F, or use a discrete Dakota fire pit to heat up some rocks. They warm the bivy about 10F degrees, for a few hours. Then I have to repeat that process, but at least I can get SOME sleep that way. The next morning, the clear PEVA, taped over the open end of the bivy, facing the sun, raises the temps inside of the bivy by 20F, by about 11 am. So I can sleep from then until 5 pm. I always take sedatives, sleep mask and earplugs. Owls, coyotes, insects, frogs, scraping branches can make a LOT of noise and at dawn, the crows or magpies and jays start in with their bs, too.

the $95, XL size bivy is from 2GoSystems, Avoid the regular size Trifecta, unless you're a little Asian guy. Every place you let it touch you will form a cold spot. Ditto if you let the envelope touch the bivy. Pull a ridgeline and the hammock thru the bivy and have another ridgeline for the plastic 'envelope" that goes around the bivy. The envelope is made of two taped-together, heavy-duty drum liners. The hunk of clear PEVA shower curtain is 3x4 ft. It can be used with the one way projected heat of a Siberian fire lay. , if you're up in the hammock. Tape the top half of the PEVA inside of the open end of the bivy, with the PEVA facing the fire. The weight of your head and torso hold the PEVA "shut" all around the bottom half of the opening in the end of the bivy. The bivy has full zippers, so it can be opened-flat for use as a canopy, or worn as a poncho. It's not much by itself, but with the envelope, it will let you sleep ok at 45F, in wind and rain and just in cammies and unlaced shoes. That's pretty good for a 2 lb total weight and bulk of about 1 qt size. You can't wear the sleeping bags as clothing if it's raining or if the brush is wet from previous rain or if you have no way to protect them from your sweat. My set up can be varied in a dozen ways, to suit conditions. You can't pair a sleeping bag with a fire, cause you'll burn holes in the bag. Once a down bag gets wet, you wont be drying it out while in the field. It's very hard to do so even with a bag that uses synthetic filler material. I once nearly died because a sleeping bag got soaked and I had to walk many miles with that damned thing dripping onto me and everything that I had. I hate the damned things except for van-living. Mylar sucks, too, for anything more than standing around at a car accident for an hour, waiting for a cop or ambulance. It'll soak you in your own body moisture if you seal it around you. If you dont seal it, it wont help much vs loss of your body heat. It'll keep rain and wind off of you (mostly) but youll soon get tired and fall over. Mylar is no protection at all from heat lost thru conductivity.and it tears if you just look at it cross-eyed. I dont use it at all. The reflective tyvek breathes (a bit, at least) and is pretty damned durable.

+Jason I personally haven't worn or really checked out the FILBE in field use ( I have played around with the assault pack ) and, while it's very good and it's really very high quality ( it was made for the Marines, after all ), I like my ILBE better and think the Marines should have stayed with it. The FILBE assault pack is a better assault pack but, the APB03 assault pack of the ILBE is more comfortable when fully loaded. My U.S.G.I. MOLLE 2 Large ruck seems to me about the same as the FILBE. Of course the FILBE has more MOLLE, a better assault pack, the really cool and spacious lid flap pockets [a feature I like on a good ruck], the elastic side pockets, and an extra 1000 cubic inches of capacity. I hear you on not being able to hoof as much weight as you used to. I'm 47 and, on the rare occasions I have the time and opportunity to really train with my guns and gear in the woods for an overnight or weekend, the gear I hump doesn't weigh what it did at 20-something

+3 Rivers Survival Can you tell me the brand and model of sleeping bag you show in the video, it's temperature rating, and about what they cost? My sleep gear mostly consists of a Ranger roll, tarp, and a pop-up hooped bivvy ( the kind that are kinda like little tents ). When it's folded, rolled, and doubled up in it's cinch sack, it looks about the same size as the tent you showed in it's cinch bag. If I could find a good, affordable, 2 person tent ( I think you said it was a 2 person tent ) in the same size that would accommodate me and my gear at the same time, that's better than that little hooped bivvy and I'm sure way more comfortable. Thanks

The US military claims that hostilities nearly cease at 10F degrees, especially at night, because such temps are so hard on batteries. There goes your radio, your night vision, maybe even your red-dot sight. I''m set up to handle 10F, if need be, without a heat source. beyond the UCO lantern, I might not sleep, but i"ll be ok. 5 lbs, not 13 lbs, which is what you're lugging around. in the way of poncho, tent, and sleeping bag and sleeping pad. My packs total 2.5 lbs and I am talking about just shoes, socks, cammies and cap, not 5 more lbs of winter clothing, for which you have ZERO need of (for half of the year) Much of the time, you have no use for the sleep/shelter gear all day, but I wear it as clothng if it's cold and it's unaffected by its getting wet. All of my stuff is useful in hot weather, cause I set it up that way. You've got nothing vs bugs or heat and that's a bad oversight, half of the year, in half of the US.

the axe is noisy, inefficient and dangerous. This is especially true when you're starving, exhausted and lacking in sleep. I carry just the blade of a Cold Steel shovel and a modified Crunch multitool. I've got 3 different saw blades, any one of which can be held in the vise grip of the Crunch. In an hour, I can make whatever length and configuraiton of handle I need for the shovel and then REALLY get some work done. 500 cubic inches inside of just the main pack? I dont think that's even close to correct. google saysit's 5000 cubic inches.

The military sleep system weighs 9lbs, is adequate only down to 0F degrees and is VERY subject to getting wet. It's also VERY bulky and in a lot of cases, very expense, and totally useless in warm weather. You have nothing to help you handle rocky, wet ground, steel slops, roots, or bugs. That looks like 30 lbs to me, and you still need 22 lbs of guns, ammo, armor, night vision, batteries, solar charger, helmet and 8 lbs of water. How much do you practice humping 60 lbs up and down hills, fighting mud, snow, brush, all day long? Better have some trekking poles, or you're going to blow out a knee, calf mucle, hamstring, twist an ankle, etc, the first 10 miles. I hold my kit to 40 lbs and Im VERY fit, cause I know how dangerous it is to get that exhausted/careless.
