To sum up: The triage nurse should at least provide some basic screening test to exclude the boy from an "emergency condition", then transfer the family to the University Hospital. No screening test -> EMTALA violation.

Dr.Neil, thank you for all your hard work in making complicated concepts simple to understand and remember. I do have a follow up question: step 3 UWORLD has a similar question. In the explanation section it says that the emergency department is obligated to assess the condition (emergent vs non-emergent) regardless of the insurance status, however they are not obligated to treat non-emergent conditions. Since your vignette doesn't mention hemodynamics of the child, assuming he is hemodynamically stable, is that a true violation of EMTALA?

Thank you doctor.So, in a situation like this and the patient doesn’t have insurance coverage, the hospital does have to treat the patient without insurance , but how is this related to doctors because this has to do with the administration of the hospital and not to doctors in my opinion, And how could the hospital manage this if it depends on financial matters first and the patient doesn’t have the financial coverage? Would this be for free ? I think this attract more questions …
