My brother and I remember it from elementary school, he hadn’t heard it in years and didn’t know the name. The first clip I sent proved I knew exactly what he was remembering. We are now just waiting for Dad’s internment with our mother at ANC. The band will definitely be playing it!

I’m academy grad, class of ‘94. I was a prior enlisted Marine. One of the things that impressed me most was diversity of midshipmen. I’m not talking about race or sex. Geography, background, beliefs. Diverse yet drawn to service & the heritage of the USNA. Most of these kids could go to school anywhere & be anything. To choose this means something.

I did not hear the USNA Glee Club (above) sing the verse which included Naval Aviation, which was one of the three versus(?) we sang during Sunday Mass and Services in the NAS Pensacola Chapel when I was attending Aviation Officer Candidate School, and VT-10, in 1968/69. It went something like this:: Lord Guard and Guide the men who fly, through the great spaces in the sky, Be with them always in the air, through darkening storms and sunlight fair, , Oh hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril in the air. Does anyone know where Eternal Father, aka "The Navy Hymn" , can be heard, or obtained, or purchased, which includes Naval Surface, Naval Aviation, and the Marine Corps, in the hymn?

He also foresaw paired electrons, which he believed could be used in interstellar communication. He also invented the autopilot for the Navy mini-RPV.

YES! YES YES YES!!! I LOVE THE ORIGINAL WORDS! And they are so fitting for an army of soldiers to sing!!! "As HE died too make men holy let us die to make men free"!!! It's a sober truth of war that I believe is glossed over when the original words are changed to say "let us live". I don't like war, but this is a battle song that carries so much important history and it must not be altered to fit the times. This song is to be sung as written!!! Wonderful!!!

Breck - There are lots of alternate verses that have been written to accommodate the various branches of the military. Go to this website by the Navy and you can see some of the verses. [ www.navy.mil/navydata/nav_legacy.asp?id=172 ] My Dad - 94 years old - just passed away and I even found a set of verses for the Navy SeaBees! So - you probably can have this wonderful hymn put on your "list".

I think they will let you sneak in. Thanks for putting yourself at the service of our great Republic. I once saw a Army member say that he was not crazy, so he did not become a Marine. John Adams said, " America will be great as long as she is good." Our country is down a perilous road at present. It is difficult to appreciate something about which you know little or nothing. 340,000 Union men paid reparations with their blood. This does not include the survivors, often with grievous wounds. The surrender to Grant by Lee was on Palm Sunday. Lincoln had only 5 days to live.During those days, he had " Dixie" played in the White House. He sought no humiliation, but promised peace and unity, once again. That is the reason that Gen. Grant stayed on in DC, to keep Lincoln's wishes. Gen. Sherman, who was in awe of his friend, told him not to stay in DC. He said that it was a " nest of thieves." How apt. PS : Grant was not an alcoholic. Lincoln had arranged for a Norwegian artist, Ole Bolling, to paint a portrait of all of his key generals on horseback. After a few weeks with Gen. Grant, the artist asked him for some alcohol. Grant told him that he had none because he had suffered from such slander. And Grant was not a man to lie. Grant has taken army soldiers and their family via Panama ( Grant suggested that someone should build a cana; there.) This was after the Mexican War, where he was awarded three high decorations. Eventually, he ended up in a garrison in then California, but now Oregon. There was nothing to do but drink and hunt. Grant would go out on horseback with those officers who preferred birds. Grant had never shot an animal in his entire life. He saw a beautiful group of wild turkeys, and he said there were 41. Lincoln could not kill a chicken. These two gentle men were to oversee a war. That must have been Providence. Had he continued in his paintings, he would have been one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. They are in the West Point Museum. Grant was slender and only 5' 8". He could not hold his liquor. With one drink, he slurred his speech, with two, he had to hold onto the furniture. The other officers, his good friends, told him to fight the charge, because he was innocent. There is nothing in writing from Buchanan about a court martial.(Grant held no grudges. Later, the the Civil War, he gave Buchanan important duties. How many individuals would reward a man who had vilified him?) Grant had fallen into a deep depression, missing his wife and his children. He also had problems with his teeth. He had a son, his namesake, whom he had never met, and he was now a toddler. He also battled another bout with malaria, which he had contracted as a child. So, he headed home, now a captain. Because California was in the midst of a Goldrush, Grant had three pieces of gold with him. Along the way, he met two former soldiers who were in a bad way. He gave each man a nugget of gold. Then he met another man who was in dire straits. He gave him his last piece. When he arrived home, there were two little boys playing in the yard. He swooped them up in his arms, but they did not know who he was. Sometimes, when I think of our wars and their absolute pain and horror, it saddens me to see men with purple hair and who must take careful artistry to groom their facial hair, I question everything. Look at those teenagers in those landing craft on D-Day, 1944, on those rough seas. I was 18 months old. Today is my birthday. November 15th. I think too many young people may have too much time on their hands.
