U.S. Marines with Combat Logistics Regiment-17, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade and U.S. Navy sailors with Naval Beach Group-1, Expeditionary Strike Group-3, conduct Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) training and offload equipment from the USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus (T-AK 3011) in support of Exercise Dawn Blitz 2013 in San Diego, California. Dawn Blitz is part of an annual training exercise that prepares Navy and Marine Corps forces to conduct amphibious operations and offload shipping. (U.S. Marine Corps Motion Imagery by Lance Cpl. When she was a brand new ship, we loaded her with brand new everything for a Battalion. The Marine Corps flew us out to Panama City Florida from Kaneohe Bay in 1986. It was called MPS-3. We had 4 ships if memory serves me correct.

I signed onto her sister ship the USNS Sgt. William R. Button (T-AK-3012) on March 19, 2003, the start of the war on Iraq.

Yea, was sure nice to stare at Austrailia for a couple weeks 1 mile away and never set foot there ;). I was on the Dwayne T Wiliams.

Now then it would be interesting if they can execute this kind of amphibious operation in stormy weather such as what they had off the coast of Normandy on D day.

it's called training dumbass. And yes, this can be accomplished in much worse sea state conditions than 'D-day.'

this is not an amphibious assault landing this is moving equipment ashore. They used similar equipment on the Normandy Beach heads, including wrecked ships used as a break water and build artificial peers out into the coast.

a lot of this man power is there for training. in a real war senerio you would not have as many guys standing around
