Who agrees with the thought that DP had perhaps the greatest forehand of any player of the past 20+ years? It's a monster.

We’d be speaking about Delpo in the same breath as the big 3 right now if he didn’t get injured. One of the greatest lost talents in tennis history. As least he has this moment to look back on.

Tells you a lot about his ability that even _with_ all the injuries he was able to keep coming back to each finals of Slams and Masters, win titles, win bronze and silver Olympic medals. Really is such a shame how much injuries impacted his career.

If he could have walked without any major injuries, he would have peaked around 2013 or 2014. With an unparalleled all-time great forehand and the most solid backhand on tour, he would have been the GOAT hard hitter.

This loss felt like a turning point for Federer because he didn't really dominate the game anymore after this season. This match should/would have been his 3rd Slam of '09, but it ended his season on a damper. With this loss, he never won another US Open after '08 and sporadically only won a total 5 majors over the next decade with his rivals Djokovic, Nadal, and Murray imposing themselves into the 2010s. After '09, the only year Federer was able to win even 2 Slams in the same year was 2017 (the AO and Wimbledon).

@@shervintravels2628 Worst part is, you can clearly feel he is in control of the match, till suddenly he decides to prove his forehand is better or something, he can't, and then loses his mental because of a late challenge. Sometimes tennis is about playing in a certain way that dismantles the opponent rather than overpowering him and show off, and Rog forgot about that in this match. Not that I am mad about it, because IMO Delpo deserved it.

Federer missed a crucial forehand at 3-3 in the 2nd set tiebreaker to give the set, then loses two crucial forehands again in the fourth set tiebreaker when he was 3 points away from a 6th consecutive US Open title. Wimbledon 2008: Federer commits 8 forehand unforced errors in the last 2 games, after being 2 points away from a 6th consecutive Wimbledon title. Roger´s forehand may have given him a lot, probably the best forehand ever, but at the same time took from him a lot more glory, victories that he should have had.

This was the match that should have made Federer move to the bigger frame and rework his back hand. But Roger was extremely stubborn with 15 grand slam titles despite loss after loss to Nadal at Wimbledon and the French between 2009 and 2016. The bigger frame, Edberg in his corner, and the neo backhand enabled him to win 2 slams in 2017! It’s a lesson that nothing fails like success. If Federer did not have 15 grand slams, he would’ve made those changes in 2010, not 2016
