i did this model back in 1995, not the lit up version, just the regular. the decals you applied, i was told by the model builder at the store, to paint the panels, because of the different lighting techniques used on the show. he gave me duck egg blue, and some sort of sandy grey to paint each individual panel, where you placed all those decals. for the parts of the warp engines, and impulse engines, he gave me a metallic gun metal grey, not the yellowish color you used here. the work you've done here is mind blowing!!!!!! when i got mine, the fiber optic lit one was also available and came with its own drill to do the windows, etc...but i just wanted to get back into building models....fantastic job!!!!!

Looking great. Have you thought of using led strip light or 10mm led? You can use popsicle sticks too. For the open windows, you can use white glue. As the glue dries it will become clear, just like the Testor Window maker.
@epycmodels946
@epycmodels946 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have been leaning to the idea of using light strips instead of the LEDs for the larger models. Thanks for the info and happy modeling.

A Couple questions for you: Why did you choose not to keep the windows clear since it was a clear kit to begin with. Also, what there a reason for not using led tape? I'm always interested in the thought process!
@epycmodels946
@epycmodels946 6 жыл бұрын
For the windows, I was not going to waste time masking inside and out before painting. It was easier for me to just paint then cut out the windows I wanted the light to shine through. Plus I like a challenge. I did think about using LED light strips but thought, nawww and just used the regular LEDs. I find it more fun to think outside the box but I know the LED strips would be a lot less of a hassle than doing it the way I did.
@cambecker
@cambecker 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, you don't mask the windows on the clear kit. I painted the whole thing chrome, then black to light block, then primer, then the base coat. No paint on the inside. Then you use a file or xacto blade to scrape away the paint from each embossed window. Sure beats all that drilling, and the whole point as to why they made the clear kit. I lit it all with led tape lights inside. You can then use fine sharpies to "tint" a few windows with blues and yellows to give the illusion of interior room colour variances.. I know this was is the lazy way and your way is a remarkable feat of skill and patience! Amazing job! You can check mine out on my page!
@GamePar
@GamePar 6 жыл бұрын
Cameron Becker I feel as though masking would give a better window edge than scraping, but alas, I have yet to find masked for this kit. Aztec dummy can’t make the masked that small. I will be masking the windows on the inside and putting all the black light block layer and the white lighting layers on the inside to keep unnecessary layers of paint off the exterior of the hull. Looks like I’ll have to scrape unless I can find a punch the right size to make my own masked. I’ll uncover all the windows so they have the glasses in look and have lights that are ‘off’ covered by the paint layers on the inside.
@cambecker
@cambecker 6 жыл бұрын
andrewreynard .... umm.. these windows are like a millimeter wide. Trying to put masking on them seems like an arduous task. Given that the windows are in embossed into the plastic scraping the paint out of them is fairly simple and since it’s difficult to go outside the edges when you’re scraping only within the embossed area, the result does give you a clean edge. It also scuffs the clear plastic giving you the added benefit of a way to diffuse the light source within. But I guess we all have our preferences. I would be interested to see how your model turns out though! be sure to post it!

The last 2 minutes made me emotional. I really love this ship. Didn't get what you did to make the saucer section hold on to the stardrive section. On my model it is to heavy for the small clips and keeps falling of.
@epycmodels946

I did nothing to the two sections to hold together. One thing you could do to help hold the two hulls together is install Neodymium magnets. They are very strong and should do the trick.

@@lloydstephens2994 You have to make sure to add resistors to the red LEDs. They will suck up all the power from the other lights. I use 47ohm resistors for those. I get my resistors in bulk from China at an amazing price.

I'm in the process of drilling out the very same windows now, did you find that the plastic melted quite easily and formed if you wasn't quick enough? To counter I would drill a bit quicker and then break a drill bit 😂 tedious job!
@epycmodels946
@epycmodels946 4 жыл бұрын
No no, drill slower but let the drill do the work. Move it back and forth along the window indent. Let gravity and weight of the Dremel do the work for you. You will go through a lot less bits. It also helps if the bit is not fully.
@Danvito13
@Danvito13 4 жыл бұрын
@@epycmodels946 I am on lowest setting on the drill, I will have to be less heavy handed I think. I have also put the bit as far back as possible, so I will just try and be a little more careful. The IDEA of the clear plastic model, is not to drill the windows! You paint it, and then whit a exactor knife, you "cut" the paint and peel of each window. is super easy and you dont destroy the model.
@epycmodels946

Do you know of any good alternatives for the colored caps you took from your 350 scale build? Also, was the .03in of the fiber optic the only size you used?
@epycmodels946
@epycmodels946 6 жыл бұрын
I used a glue gun once to make the navigational lighting cap for the Defiant. It worked beautifully. You need to make sure you only use a tiny dab of it. If you make a mistake you just pull it off and do it again with the glue gun. Yes, I only used the .030 fiber optics for the torpedo launchers.
