When of heard of President Ford's passing in 2006 I was heartbroken and deeply saddened. Though not old enough to remember his Presidency he has always been one of my favorite President's. Gerald was a man of integrity, honor, bravery, courage, honesty and respect! USS Gerald R. Ford not only carries on his legacy but pays a tremendous tribute to his memory. To all the crew who serve aboard this vessel know this: Americans all throughout the globe support you, we love you and we wish this mighty ship several successful and fulfilling deployments throughout her 30+ yrs at sea! I wanted to tour her when visit navy base but Navy security officer said not permitted but was sad I could not being I never ever my 6 years active duty I'm appalled not being allowed to tour her when I had access to base. But navy regs navy regs so understand I was in deck dept toughest dept on both my ships Afs4 an bb62 but guess because she nuke carrier that may be other reason not allowed

The commissioning of this great super aircraft carrier brings my memory back 76 years ago on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor what if the US Navy at that time have no aircraft carriers! It could been a great calamity of unimaginable proportions to the freedom loving people of the world....God bless your great country - Americans I envy all of you....

in 1974, I was at an NBA game between the Portland trailblazers and the Buffalo Braves. A few minutes after the second half of the game began, there was a bit of a commotion down near the court. An entourage of security walked in followed by the governor of the state of Oregon and the president of the President of the United States, Gerald R Ford. Ford being the sports fan that he was wanted to see Bill Walton fresh out of UCLA play a professional game. As the game was Ending I scurried down To see if I might be able to shake hands with the president. Sure enough he came right back through the same tunnel and he took a few moments to shake peoples hands, including mine at age 14, I will never forget.

That’s not how it works. The US Navy only names ships after presidents who have served in the Navy, bolstered our naval strength or former sailors ex: George HW Bush, Theodore Roosevelt, Carl Vinson, Doris Miller. Since Trump has neither served in the Navy or made significant naval programs I highly doubt they’ll name a Carrier after him.
