Have a Facebook friend that was Midway VAW-115. I was on Indy 92-96, VAQ-136. Dang near lost my head crossing the foul line after getting cooked out from under a B while we were hanging a center pod. 18 on the cat, saw the wing tip right in front of my face. Dumb ass.

Do you remember when the guy that won the beauty contest kissed the XO and ran like hell as the XO started to reach for his gun and pursue him? The entire hanger deck roared with laughter and he had to stop and realize be'd been had. What a hoot that was...

I was in VAW-115 on the 1972-73 cruise. We flew E-2B's. My enlistment was up in December and I flew off on the COD (C-1A Trader) with a deck launch on December 16. Attack Squadrons were VA-56, VA-93 (both flew A-7s) and VA-115, which flew A-6. Fighter squadrons were VF-151 and VF-161. I think they were flying F-4B at start of cruise, and transitioned to F-4N, I believe during the cruise! Might not have been F-4N, but it was not F-4J. We also had KA-5 whales for tankers, RF-8C for photo recon and BDA, and I believe some Sea Kings for Angels and SAR. We had a C-1A for COD, from VC-3, I think. We had some EA-6Bs, and used some A-6s for tanker duty. I worked in AIMD3 radio shops and mostly worked on IFF and Nav gear. I slept under the port side blast deflector, and worked one frame forward of that. On a recent visit to Midway Museum, the tour that goes through CIC comes out at a ladder on the 02 level, right next to my berthing area. Never a dull moment on an aircraft carrier at sea.
