I can tell you why they allowed Janeway to get away with her final act of time travel. Because allowing it MADE it her final act of time travel. They realized Janeway would make their consoles beep another 15 times if they undid it, and that allowing it would end up doing less damage to the timeline than constantly trying to fix it. So they let her go.

That would've been great to see and added tension if they had it like a countdown clock; search for the main core and observe the spare degrading along with spare's life get worse when used for weapons. Another thing they could've done was have it be used as a separate weapons-only power source like the holodecks were running on a separate power grid. If the main drive went offline, the second could be called "Fortress Mode" to hold off the threat until the mains were back online and allow for FTL escape. I mean, the Intrepids did have two deflector dishes, it just fits.
@robertballasty3955 жыл бұрын
That would make sense - an emergency spare to plug in and switch on relatively quickly in a dire situation, even it was smaller capacity - definitely makes more sense than having to assemble a spare from parts. What would make even more sense would be the emergency backup all piped and connected, ready to go. Like running one boiler instead of two on an old seagoing ship. Or like having an emergency generator for your house that kicks in when main power fails and the diverter switch is triggered.

Given Voyager's track record with crashing shuttles, it was probably best that they never flew the Aeroshuttle.
@SnowmanTF25 жыл бұрын
If there was one thing the crew got pretty dam good at was building replacement shuttles, they also did so quickly enough that a lack of shuttles was never a plot point. Since they left seemingly with three and in only the periods we saw they lost at least seventeen, according to blueprints it is not possible to fit more than 8 in at any time but Neelix's large shuttle took space the entire run, by the end they back to their normal shuttle count and had built two delta fliers. So replacing Aeroshuttles seems not only quite in their wheelhouse but could have made a large reduction in the number of standard shuttles they had to build per year.

My thoughts on the spare warp core: Previous ship classes, such as the Galaxy class, used fusion reactors for the electrical components of the ship. The warp core only powered the warp drive. If I recall, the Intrepid class did not have the fusion reactors and instead generated electricity from the warp core. I figured the backup core would be more of a "let's turn this on to keep the lights running when the main one is off" situation. But I don't know why they wouldn't just install backup fusion generators instead. Shrug.

I always thought the temporal corps or whatever didn’t intervene with admiral janeway because the outcome favoured the federation
@Hawk_of_Battle5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much yeah. It's the same reason they don't interfere in the events of First Contact, which also involved time travel. If those events hadn't happened, humans would never have developed warp travel/would have been assimilated. Fortunately the borg intervened, time travel happened, mankind got to meet aliens and the Federation came into existence. The time cops only care about maintaining timelines where they themselves exist, which means humanity/the federation has to exist, which means any time travel that threatens that is bad and any time travel that doesn't is fine. Presumably, Voyager taking too long to get home is a "bad" timeline, which leads to their undoing, so any time travel that gets Voyager home early is A-ok (such as Harry changing things after they attempted to use slipstream tech, or Future!Janeway bringing back all that juicy tech).

@smilodon75115 жыл бұрын
Perhaps they only got involved when someone messed with the timeline from their own time, any time-altering before their time would actually be the correct timeline for them.
@fitzdraco5 жыл бұрын
My theory on why the time federation didn't interfere with Janeway. Because it was less damaging to the timeline. Her original trip home was some 15 years longer, and if you use the show as a reference she managed to bork the timeline about twice a year, sometimes smaller sometimes larger. Each effect likely had some sort of impact on the future that had to be remedied, even if we didn't see the time federation, they were working. Expand that out to 15 years. Now Janeway goes back, why did she pick that time. She could have gone back much earlier and saved more of the crew, and also give them more of life at home. But she didn't, she picked that one point. There was access to transwarp everywhere in the Delta quadrent, so she had to have a reason to pick that time. The time federation helped her. Because they needed Voyager to get back but Janeway inflicted a tremendous amount of damage to the timeline doing it the right way that repair options were drastic. By bringing her home early the damage caused by that was less overall then what would have happened in the normal course of events. It was the best option out of a lot of terrible ones. That's why that exact time was chosen, and how she managed it.

Since the Warp scale is geometric if Voyager's maximum sustained warp speed was reduced even by one warp factor it could significantly extend the journey. This might also explain why in the episode where the main core was stolen they suggested they couldn't go to warp anymore since the spare core only gave a limited warp field therefore making the spare core irrelevant for the purpose of Voyager given it's overall mission: to get home. perhaps the secondary warpcore, which appears smaller on the diagram, could only achieve warp 6 or something. Making the trip home impossible in their lifetime. Also my favorite: According to schematics, the long set of 5 large windows under the 3 large windows for the mess hall was actually the captain's quarters! Her quarters were twice the size of the mess hall! Though it doesnt look that way on the show, the schematics say differently.

Think of the spare warp core as the donut spare in your car that says do not drive over 45MPH on this tire. I will assume the ships schematic is to scale, the replacement core is two decks shorter than the main core. Will they both move the ship yes, will they both move the ship at the same speed? most likely not. The second core may have also not had the same level of durability like a donut spare. Real tires can go over 50k miles good luck getting more than 500 out of a donut spare. Besides with all the combat Voyager endured escaping the Kazon over the first two season and the noticeable lack of federation ship yards and star bases the spare core was most likely cannibalized for spare parts.

The main body of the secondary warp core is quite large, bigger than any of the cargo bays. Having that pre-assembled but some of the fine tuning and some components needing to be installed after transfer to the main slot makes sense. It also appears to be much smaller, possibly meaning a lower power output and lower top speed. With those in mind, recovery of the primary core would be very important.

read the novels. although not considered canon, the writers managed to turn the borg into something way more menacing. Bashir, seven , the Doctor, Enterprise E and Excalibur (a hot rod Galaxy class) had multiple ideas to defeat this new "mutation" of the borg. Spoilers: . . . . Excalibur's solution, the planet killer from TOS. while the borg was attempting to assimilate the planet killer, seven uploaded an impossible math equation but only after an assimilated Janeway managed to wrangle some control away from the Cube/sphere/whatever shaped it assumed. yes, the ship is the borg. the drones were just... blood cells for an analogy. after this, more borg came from elsewhere, and razed several key federation planets. they didnt want to assimilate anymore, they wanted to annihilate.

@@johnmorris2170 How does the Borg look scarier when single cubes are being taken out by a single ship with a single torpedo? They had zero assistance from the fleet in the battle and it looked as though the hive mind couldn't think fast or adapt. If Star Trek Voyager was as video game, we would have said the Borg got nerfed, because their power and threat got severely diminished. There threat went from quick adapting AI/cybernetic human hybrids to slow moving, non-thinking zombies with machine parts. They focused on how the queen did all the thinking for the whole collective. Once the queen was tricked, the whole collective was tricked. That is not hive mind thinking but it is a single mind.

Warp core ejection was among the primary failure devices for the Intrepid class. It was a fairly reliable system, having only failed to fail once throughout the show. For the Galaxy class, it was considered a backup failure device to be used only if the starboard power coupling actually managed to stay online during a battle.

Dear CBS thank you for helping me to decided to *not get CBS all access,* and instead watch your new Trek stuff on _unofficial servers._ Still considering how CBS treated Eliza Dushku [Faith from Buffy] over that whole sexual harassment case, I'm not suprised they're still jerks. She's decided to give up on Hollywood, CBS told her they'd use their influence to destroy her career, even though she did everything by the book, tried mediation, and agreed to confidentiality (it was uncovered by a separate investigation and then CBS and Weatherly violated the agreement by rubbishing her). Her demands included better training and procedures to prevent future harassment, hardly a money grabbing action. Yes they got rid of Les Moonves, but Micheal Weatherly is still there and Bull just got renewed for _another_ season. Along with the Showrunner who wrote her out and _the lawyers_ who couldn't see a problem [and thought that bikini pics she had on her own Instagram made her fair game]. Moonves is gone, but a lot of *entitled assholes* _that he promoted and encouraged are still there_ - Weatherly is a friend and that's why he could (and still has) get away with it.…There are a suspicious number of actresses from NCIS that have given up on acting and _can't_ talk about why.
