Indeed to go from the Bridge to the shuttle bay the turbolift would have to go down, back, down diagonally and then horizontal. Discovery has some limitations in it's turbocar placement due the thin connections between the inner and outer portions of the primary hull. I can't even see if there is enough room to run a turbo car under the floor of the connections - it doesn't seem like there is. Suggesting the only direction the turbo car can go is backwards into the main hull from the bridge - and any turbo car in the saucer is just on a perpetual loop of the outer hull if it exists at all. But the 24th Century USS defiant has a turbolift network and it's tiny so the Discovery should have a saucer car somewhere. I suppose it can be justified in not having an elaborate network on something like a Miranda class though.

Smarty pants checking in. The warp core ejection system was mentioned on screen. TNG season 5, episode 18, Cause & Effect. This exchange happens after the Enterprise suffers a direct impact to one of the warp nacelles. Geordi: "Initiating emergency core shutdown!" Data: "Core shutdown was unsuccessful. We are losing antimatter containment." Geordi: "We've got to eject the engine core!" Data: "Ejection systems are offline." Boom.

Geordi was trying to say that the Magnetic Interlocks were ruptured which prevented him from being able to seal off the antimatter containment pods. He could have ejected the core, but he would have released antimatter by doing so which would have also destroyed the ship. Their only option was to abandon the Enterprise.

It also just makes sense since the ship has much more horizontal distance than vertical. Climbing stairs between decks would be easier than going from the front to the back of the ship within decks. Also, the turbolift always delivers characters exactly where needed and directly connects the bridge to engineering without needing to walk.

Krane Originally we weren’t even going to see engineering in the first episode, but then they realized, if they didn’t then the set would never be built and we would never see engineering either. The smaller shuttle bays were just redressed of the sets used for cargo bays and other similar rooms.

Funny I click on this and after the intro I think to myself, "well someone read the technical manual". Then 30 seconds later he holds it up. Great video. A prime example of how Star Trek use to have some thought put into it. Loved reading all fictional tech 25 years ago, this was a happy reminder.

The whole thing was inspired by Franz Joseph's TOS-era "Star Fleet Technical Manual," basically a piece of very elaborate fanfic that got the official imprimatur and was treasured by geeks during the dark time in the 70s when Star Trek was off the screen. Diagrams from it showed up on ship displays in the movies, so parts of it effectively got canonized.

I did know all that. I once had the same book on all features of the Enterprise-D back in the early 90s. I scoured that book back then, to know every feature of the Enterprise-D. You did miss a vital feature, THe Enterprise-D could be controlled also from engineering, on that engineering flat-panel computer, besides from the main bridge & battle bridge. Technically, it could also be controlled from a "PADD", although that would be extremely limited due to the processing power limitations of the PADDs. Also, another very little known feature was that the main computer core had it's own subspace/FTL field generator, so that it could process computations at literally "Faster-than-Light" speeds when the ship was at warp, but also useful during battle scenarios.

The writers for Star Trek didn't use the Galaxy class to its fullest potential. They had the ability to remove the saucer section and turn the lower part of the ship into a battle cruiser, but during the Dominion War on DS9, every Galaxy class ship you see had its saucer connected. I thought they weren't doing justice to what those ships were really capable of. The U.S.S. Odessey might have just survived, if she'd gone through that wormhole in battle mode!

They may have been equipped differently. The main shuttle bay is in the saucer section, so it can carry and service a lot of fighter craft with it. These particular Galaxies could have been refit to replace much of the volume dedicated to science and civilian life with tactical systems so the saucer was less dead weight in combat than it was with the Enterprise

On alot of the TNG episodes there was a threatened core breach and somehow the ejection systems were knocked off line. One perticular episode that I love is S5 E18 Cause and Effect where the enterprise kept being destroyed over and over due to a core breach after one of the nacells became damaged.

I always remember the blueprint books showing that the Enterprise D had an Olympic sized swimming pool. I always thought it would be fun to see that, or possibly even see them using it to train with their pressure space suits to possibly visit life forms in an underwater environment.

It's "CETACEAN," not "CETAREAN" - and those whales and dolphins were crew members (or at least civilian specialists). The Enterprise's warp cores each operated in their own static warp field - essentially, the electrons traveled faster than the speed of light. (IIRC, this was mentioned in the season 2 TNG episode "Evolution," when Wesley's nanites are eating the computer core. The entrances to the shuttle bays were actually in the main pylon (the top of the battle bridge); some blueprints show the starboard bay doors as wider than the port side.

One awesome fact from the Enterprise D's technical manual you reference: before Generations ever came out, the technical manual outlines saucer separation and planetary landing of the saucer section. I remember reading that as a kid in my older sister's copy of the book and thinking how cool it was. Then they actually did it in Generations and my mind was blown.

British Ben, you're right. They destroyed the Enterprise D to create a more modern, cinematic friendly ship. Also, Galaxy class ships were obsolete by the time of the Dominion War. However, here's one argument why they could not eject the core in Generations. As you saw in the Voyager clip, the ship was already moving a warp speed and would be almost a light year away by the time the core exploded (even without the core, the ship can maintain a warp bubble and velocity for a limited time). In Generations, the ship is either stationary or moving at low sublight speeds. Perhaps the best course of action was to separate the saucer section and move away at maximum impulse. Then again, maybe they could have ejected the core and moved both hulls away a maximum impulse. I wasn't there.

Galaxy Class where not obsolete during the Dominion War at all, they had been upgraded so much they where essentially the same as the one we saw in Yesterdays Enterprise. All the Civilian and science facilities removed, it carried garrisons of ground forces and the huge warp core was used to power upgraded weapons and the powerful shields gave immense protection. Finally the huge shuttle bay carried Peregrine fighters, some Galaxy Class ships like the USS Citadel carried Quantum Torpedoes. While the Federation would never call it so it was actually a Battleship at that point, one of the most effective ships the Federation had and they used them in "Galaxy Wings" of either pairs or three vessels to amplify the punch with the ships working together.

A little too fresh out of space-dock to be obsolete.... honestly! And I'm not at all sure what about the E was more "cinematic friendly" the warp nacelles look like much older technology compared to Galaxy Class nacelles and the ship itself though narrower (because the oblong saucer section has been rotated around by 90 degrees) but much longer which would seem to make it less maneuverable IMHO. Sad but true, producers simply wanted an excuse to demonstrate the Galaxy Class saucer section's ability to act as a lifeboat and land on a planet in a disaster and destroy a perfectly good starship... it's been hashed and rehashed how a truly obsolete Klingon Bird of Prey could possibly have ever destroyed a Galaxy Class starship even with knowing the shield frequency... it should have been simple and quick for the D to have collapsed the BoP's shield and destroy it with all the D's overwhelming fire power after all.

There was a bigger practical issue: the Enterprise D literally wasn't suitable for movie filming as it was designed for TV. There's a reason why everything is dark - they are hiding that fact the set isn't up to snuff. Of course new merchandise is a great bonus for the studio too.

@@OldUKAds: It looked perfectly fine to me in the Generations movie.... my only complaint (besides the loss of the ship at the end) was that there were no background sounds from the ship systems like in the TV series and that silence just sounds all wrong without the background sounds it just seemed more like a movie set than a "real" starship. Also it seemed like crew members were in some kind of transition, some wearing their TV set uniforms while others appeared to have on a newer style uniform... just saying.

@@Tris289 as long as you can source antimatter replicating torpedo's is easy, that thing about "no way to replace them when they are gone" was to mean at that TIME (having just gotten to that part of the galaxy) they had no sources of antimatter beyond what was onboard, eventually as they traveled they obviously found other sources (or they wouldn't have gotten as far as they did in warp). once you have the anti-matter available to fuel the torpedo's replicating the housings are easy. same with the shuttle craft, they had industrial sized replicators that could be used to make the parts that would be assembled into the shuttles all you needed at that point was to source some dilithium crystals to use to stabilize the warp reaction.

DanielRichards644 that's true, because The Caretaker dragging The Voyager to The Delta Quadrant did so much damage to the ship, there were multiple systems that were completely knocked off-line until repairs could be done to those systems and until repairs could done to the effected systems, there wasn't a lot that they could do especially since a large portion of the crew had died in the process of Voyager being dragged out to The Delta Quadrant

@@Marcus51090 I don't know an exact number but we know the general pace and can extrapolate from there the average distance per year, they initially state they are 75k light years from Earth and it will take them 75 years to get home, so we can assume a rate of 1k light years per year for 7k light years traveled at warp, we also know they where about 35k light years from Earth when they entered the Transwarp Hub in Endgame, I've never actually sat down and ran the numbers of all the "jumps" but I do believe 2 of them where 10k light years each. it's been a few years tho.

Replacable bridge modules or not it still seems crazy to put it right at the top and outside of all ships, so convenient for attackers to aim at, concentrate their fire on it, and destroy. Best not to think too much about these issues I guess, it makes "willing suspension of disbelief that much harder"! Well you could argue that if there is no electricity/cameras broken/screen damaged etc. a bridge that has a window for direct visual feedback would make sense. And such a bridge needs to be at the outer side of the ship (not ecessarily on top). So even though I hate discovery, their view screen that actually is a window might make sense. Like a plane or ship where the captain still has a visual impression even if the screens fail. Aside from that, these ships are ment for science, not war. One could argue this is a bit optimistic after all since they need to shoot more often than doing science, but that could be an argument..

Actually the Dolphin part is accurate because in the TNG Novel Dark Mirror the Enterprise picks up a space/nav specialist who is wait for it a Bottle-Nosed Dolphin with the rank of Lt. Cmdr. The book takes place around Season 5 of the show.

Regarding the Warp Core Ejection System: It actually was mentioned a few times in the show, including the episode "Cause and Effect". In that one, Geordi says: "We've got to eject the (engine) core!", to which Data replies: "Ejection systems off-line."

Cool! After they destroyed the D in Generations, I was sitting around with my friends and drew a sketch of what I thought the E would look like and what I drew looks almost exactly like what they did... I turned the elliptical saucer 90 degrees so it was longer, instead of wide, drew the ship with no "neck" and made long warp engine nacelles, which is pretty much what they ended up doing... but I din't win any contests and no one outside of my group of friends knows about my prophetical sketch. Lol!

The story of the design is public, and thats not how it happened. It wasn’t a contest, but someone close to Roddenberry who designed it early on during TOS. His coworker showed it to Gene while they were discussing the new TNG show and they loved it so much they approved it. No teacher, no contest. Look it up.

When I was around 10, I spend the bulk of a 40 hour drive (in an RV) pouring over the Enterprise D blueprints, and you basically got everything. The one other thing I would mention is that the ship has BEDS for about 6000 people, despite having a crew of only about 1000. This means that the Enterprise could evacuate a colony of several thousand people and they would all have actual quarters.

A bit late to the party but a few other things in the plans and tech manual we never saw on screen... The saucer section actually had a staircase in the middle of it. But the jeffries tubes were more dramatic. The turbolifts could actually work as lifeboats, and when docked to a station there was an umbilical port they could use for a lift car to move between ship and station. But shuttles are more dramatic. Much like the shuttlebay, there were large (massive, really) holodecks and smaller ones. We only saw the more budget friendly smaller ones.

The Cray-1 was built round in order to shorten wire lengths and propagation delays as bemoaned by Admiral Grace Hopper. Of course even though Voyager used the Bio-Gel computer components I would expect the Star Fleet computers to be Quantum Effect models with FTL sub-space interconnects.

In addition to whales and dolphins, they also had Medusans helping with navigation. There was a special habitat area for them and an interface system so the rest of the crew could work with them without seeing them, according to the TNG Technical Manual. Also, according to the manual, the Enterprise D's computer cores carried a backup copy of Memory Alpha, which I suppose gave them access to all the information in the Federation. Handy!

The funny thing with using that Voyager clip as the example of how easy it is to eject the core, they ejected it while the ship was at Warp! It's so easy to do they can do it while it's in use without the ship blowing up or ripping itself apart with the sudden loss of the core and return to normal space.

The stage 9 footage you used was actually from a different youtube channel. There where 2 groups making the enterprise d in unreal. Stage 9 was the second to do so and became really popular. Thats why cbs went after them. There was also a minecraft group that also made the entire enterprise D and E. This was years ago and I don't know what happened to them

Regarding the whales and dolphins on the ship; it is cannon that, following the events of Star Trek 4, each cetacean species is recognized as a people. Therefore, in any series after TOS, any cetacean in Star Fleet is likely there voluntarily. I wish this was referenced in the episode "The Measure of a Man". However, it may not have been decided at that time.

Yes, you can open the pilot swing windows of an airliner in flight. Just slow to stall speed + 20 kts, depressurize the plane, pull the safety pin, and actuate the swing handle. In fact, it's even part of the EPs (emergency procedures) for mitigating smoke and fumes in the cockpit, often in conjunction with opening the aft air release valve.

What, no swimming pool? If I recall correctly, the original Enterprise (Constitutions class, no A, B, C, D or E) had a swimming pool located in the engineering section? One thing that also comes to mind from the Next Gen Tech Manual is that all the cabins on board are modular. While in spacedock, an entire cabin could be beamed out and replaced with a different one, depending on the need. This would allow for upgrades or changes for crew size, etc. They could even reconfigure the ship for a non-human, non oxygen breathing Federation species if the need arose. During war time, the personal cabins could be changed from those space condos to bunk rooms to hold 1000's of soldiers. The manual even stated that upon launch, about 30% of the interior space hadn't been fitted out yet. Not because they didn't have time or equipment, but because they had more room than they knew what to do with. Modular spacecraft design is awesome. During peacetime, the ships could be used for exploration or transports or colonization. But when the Klingons or whomever start acting up, you'd recall the fleet, do a simple upgrade ( It would be prudent to have all the military upgraded cabins and weapons and so forth in storage, you know, just in case) then your fleet of "harmless" exploration craft become warships overnight. Which would answer the old question of "Starfleet doesn't build warships" and also how quickly they upgraded Starfleet to fight in the Dominion War.

The one thing you missed about the computer cores is that they are wrapped in a subspace field and accelerated faster than light. Page 49 of the manual "Each main core incorporates a series of miniature subspace field generators, which creates a symmetrical (nonpropulsive) field distortion of 3550 millicochranes within the faster-than-light(FTL) core elements. This permits the transmission and processing of optical data with the core at rates significantly exceeding lightspeed." Basically throw your computer in a warp field and accelerate it to 10 years per minute.

The refit connie also had an arboretum. You can see it through those big ass windows on the bottom of the ship in some of the panning shots where she flies above the camera, there's definitely some sort of trees and plantlife in there.
