One of the black belts on the outer edge of the mat was my Sensei back in 2006-2007. Sensei Richard when he was teaching out of San Mateo, right outside of the backside of Camp Pendleton. He was awesome and one my best teachers. I only wish I could have continued studying under him.

This isn't supposed to be full on contact street fighting, it's point sparring. However, with that said, either one of these guys against someone who is untrained would probably do very well using very real techniques. This is not the norm for sparring in tournaments though. Most people aren't this good.

Aren't black belts supposed to be wiser when fighting? Doing flashy attacks simply gives the opponent an opportunity to strike you down
@jestfullgremblim80022 жыл бұрын
Yes but as you can see, neither of them were even good enough (or didn't want to interrupt each other) to catch their opponent while they were doing an unpractical move. This will sound repetitive, ignorant even, but a Muay Thai (as an example, it could be most kickboxing styles) fighter would end up wrecking these people. They try way too much to give a show, yes, yes it is awesome that you make the sport greater for the eye pf the untrained, it will bring more people, but one also has to show practical fighting technique too. For first, their stance, it is good for powerful spinning kicks and for quick side kicks (which are very practical, yet we didn't see enough of them), and as they are somewhat squared like a boxing stance, they can also throw solid punches. Now then, agresive punching has shown many times to defeat this stance if the user tends to do this many flashy moves, yet we didn't get to see such here. I'm not even a striker, i'm actually a Judoka that practiced some other arts and cross-spars a lot, and even still, i can see such things.
@stealthyyoutube38642 жыл бұрын
that's only if they aren't fast enough. Most of the fancy kicks are for gaining distance, that's why they are so fast, because it doesn't give the opponent a chance to attack
@jestfullgremblim80022 жыл бұрын
@@stealthyyoutube3864 i mean, yeah. But if you are close enough and still do a fancy kick, your opponent will be able to get you first (which matters a lot in point fighting) with a push kick/front kick/teep

Point Karate drives me crazy. Both guys with their chins way up in the air and pursuing the cheap points. This particular match was much better than most I've seen but the entire sport should be replaced with full-contact matches that don't get stopped when points are scored. Point Karate instills bad habits in it's practitioners if in fact these skills are intended to be used in real empty hand self-defense situations.
@shevetlevi28212 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Most of my background is in Okinawan karate but I trained for 3 years in BJJ. On Saturday mornings in that BJJ school they did the best system of sparring I've ever seen. We'd wear gloves and start the sparring standing up, striking. It would continue in striking/ standup mode until one fighter did a takedown and then the sparring would seamlessly transition into grapling just like it would on the street. It would continue like this until one of the 2 tapped out or a time limit was reached.
@pinkydavis61132 жыл бұрын

As some1 whose done amateur MMA, I can see the benefit of point spar. U cant get this footwork when ur allowed to slug and Stephen Thompson has shown that even at the highest lvls that if u out class some1's footwork, who cares what else they got.
@TheSilenc Жыл бұрын
@@shevetlevi2821 Where do you train at? Cause my gym, SBG HQ in Dublin, separates BJJ from wrestling, so that wrestling stops when someone gets a takedown and with BJJ one starts on the ground and the other stands. And it's even a MMA gym so it's not ideal. Might be different with the pro fighters though
@shevetlevi2821 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSilenc I stopped training there due to a bad hand injury 6 years ago. Unfortunately the school, in Fort Lauderdale, FL, doesn't exist anymore. But I still believe that my teacher's system was the best balance between safety (it's easy to have life-changing injuries if your training is too realistic) and what happens out there. AND, it was alot of fun.

The japanese guy looks very amateurish. Flashy moves that consumes a lot of energy and a none of them were cautious at all. In a real fight you use a lot of energy and circular kicks should be executed with caution. Those guys were exposing their backs everytime wich is very dangeorus if they take a kick in the spine. When I was a kid a sparring partner had that bad habit too, he exposed his back to me very easy and I almost make the guy paraplegic with a straight kick, because obviosuly the rotation movement is slow. The acobatic maneuver in the air also can be counter attacked easily. Is ok to be flashy in movies, but since these kids are trying to learn self defense, if they keep doing that kind of fight, they will get accustumed to those moves and in a street fight they will pay the price.
@kevintse28702 жыл бұрын
I don’t know, I don’t think a regular assailant would see ANY of those kicks coming, as fast as they were, and they looked like they had power.
@rafcmagus2 жыл бұрын
@@kevintse2870 Well there is a common misconception about an assailant. People tends to think that they opponents are armless logs that don't react at all. Those kid for some people can be seen as fast but for me at least are slow enough to be countered. In a street fight you usually finds people that are stronger and faster from what you would be expecting. The other day I watched a video from a survellliance system where a thief just grabbed a gas tank those one used in kitchens, and climbing over a 3 meter wall while was holding the tank with one arm and uses the other to climb, and he was a very skinny guy. Most fights in the streets usually involves knives or guns, and if you do a innecesary move you could get a nice stab in the guts for free, and the key is to finish the fight in the first minutes because stamina in a fight is something that will be depleted fast. And if the assailant throw you in the floor, you will be losing more than just a match, fighting on the ground is essential. You can't know in advance if you will fighting in an open or closed ground, and that also must be taking in consideration in the defense. Using innecesary moves that may put you in a disadvantage if the assailant react accordly could be fatal for you. If the kid is pushed in the air where he obviously doesn't have a way to stay stand, he will fall on the ground for sure, and the assailant would take the opportunity to finish him more easily
