The Battles of Khalkhin Gol were the decisive engagements of the undeclared Soviet-Japanese border conflicts involving the Soviet Union, Mongolia, Japan and Manchukuo in 1939. The conflict was named after the river Khalkhin Gol, which passes through the battlefield. In Japan, the decisive battle of the conflict is known as the Nomonhan Incident after Nomonhan, a nearby village on the border between Mongolia and Manchuria. The battles resulted in the defeat of the Japanese Sixth Army.
On 2 June 1939 Georgy Zhukov was told by Commissar of Defence Kliment Voroshilov that Stalin was dissatisfied with the local commander and he was to go to Mongolia, take command of the 57th Special Corps and eliminate Japanese provocations by inflicting a decisive reverse on the Imperial Japanese Army (when summoned to Moscow on 1 June he had feared he was to be arrested and interrogated by the NKVD).
In 1939, the Japanese Cabinet sent instructions to the Kwantung Army to strengthen and fortify Manchukuo's borders with Mongolia and the Soviet Union. Additionally, the Kwantung Army, which had long been stationed in Manchuria far from the Japanese Home Islands, had become largely autonomous and tended to act without approval from, or even against the direction of, the Japanese government.

Before the outbreak of Battles of Khalkhin Gol, Kwantung Army underrated the Red Army. Though Kwantung Army had an edge over the Kuomingtang army and Chinese People`s Liberation Army in terms of firepower and mobility, its military equipments were obsolete if compared with the Red Army. Learning their inferiority, Imperial Japan decided to go to war not against the Soviet Union but the United States and Great Britain later.

Very interesting color footage of the Soviets and their BT tanks in the Mongolia region. I have an old 1973 Conflict magazine game on this battle that I loved to play with friends .... seems the Soviets won most of the games we played. ...

Please continue, this is a forgotten Battle. This battle was Batte of Stalingrad in Asia. The main land forces of the imperial japanese army were there. But japanese people deny it. They want it to be a small border incident. But not only japanese. Also chinese and south koreans are in the same denial as japanese. But these soldiers saved east asia from imperial japan. They liberated beijing from japanese. But east asians deny it. Because they are ultranationalists people. But they make a lot of war movies, but they don't show about Russian or American soldiers.

@@Juan-qu4oj I'm not Japanese. And the Chinese did not fight. When the Japanese invaded, chinese fled. But the entire 300,000 chinese soldiers in Shanghai fled without a fight. Shall I tell you the history of china ? chiang kai shek had the best German weapons and 3-5 million soldiers. But they escaped.

If you read about this battle on Wikipedia, it looks like the Soviets may have even taken more casualties in the battle but the Japanese were completely unprepared for this kind of tank battle, and ultimately had their forces surrounded. This was a huge factor in the war in the Far East, because many of the Japanese military establishment thought that based on Russia has poor performance in the first Russo, Japanese war, and the very sparse population in the Russian East, and Stalins preoccupation with Hitler that there was free land to be taken here, and this quickly change their minds. And they decided to bomb Pearl Harbor instead
