Ustad Tari Khan is not only one of the most sought after tabla players in the world, he's also a very talented singer. Most who follow Tari Khan have heard that he's a shagird of Ustad Mehdi Hassan and can competently sing most of Mehdi Sahib's ghazals. Most however probably have never heard him actually sing anything in their lives.
This video is indeed among an extremely rare collection of the Ustad's vocal recordings. In this piece, Ustad Tari Khan sings a shabad in a Sikh Gurudwara. Note how he sings the shabad in a ghazal style based on his training. His voice control, along with his playing of the harmonium is remarkable. So next time you see Tari Khan accompanying someone on the tabla, remember that he may well sing better than the main artist!
Accompanying him on the tabla is my teacher, Ustad Surjit Singh Ji, a shagird of Ustad Allah Rakha and who learned alongside with Zakir Hussain. I was fortunate to have absorbed a handful of bols & thekas from my Ustad before he left for India, never to return. But these precious few lessons lay the basis for my interest in tabla and indian classical music!
I hope you enjoy this recording!
