What an "unusual" view of Puriya-Kalyaan, very different from what is mainstream!

Feeling amazed to read the comments on Ustad's puriya kalyan sounds like Y.k. Ustad's Yaman Kalyan is also available on KZbin, pls go through that all respected music lovers. You can get the uniqueness of this rendition just on starting note.There is no such thing in rendition to confuse between the two distinguish raga's. इस पुरिया कल्याण की जादू ही कुछ और है! यमन कल्याण तो बहोत अलग है

It sounds like Yaman....Ashokji you are Great for this upload........{ Ashokji do you have Ustad Gulam Mushtaffa Khans Madhuvanthi...i heard it only once in AIR Vivid Bharathi 40 years back and the Druth sahitya sounds somthing like " Athi Sundar Sundar Thanu..." }

Ustadji has sung Yaman Kalyan only. He never touched Komal Rishabh. Even in the sargam Rishabh was shuddha. Between Puriya Kalyan and Yaman Kalyan that is the major difference, besides the chalan. Somehow for strange reasons, the master has followed chalan also of Yaman Kalyan. So all said and done the maestro has sung Yaman Kalyan.While explaining the difference between two Rags, somehow Ustad could not come out of the grip of his favourite Rag Yaman Kalyan

I recently read ( Hindustani Music in the 20th Century , By W. van der Meer) where the author while elaborating about Yaman and Yaman Kalyan mentions that the modern day Puriya Kalyan is actually Yaman Kalyan of old days ! This rendition by Ut BGAK might support that statement. I too am curious to know.

That's what he is explaining .. This is more of a lesson, I feel ... of how Puriya Kalyan was performed in the olden times ... The Ustad is legendary and so is his Gayaki ... And when he wishes to have a raga in his grip ... no matter what, he wont lose the grip ... Now what he explains is that the Komal Rishabh is nearly non-existent and the touch is most beautiful. Yes ... he is touching Komal Rishabh and not Shuddha. Listen to it carefully - listen to 5.16-5.18 seconds ... Also - Clearly, ustadji is extremely unwell ... But this Raga is Nothing like Yaman Kalyan at all ... You should listen to his Yaman ... The difference is quite clear. Also ... At the 24th minute - he is saying this raga has notes that can be sung in Yaman too ... and then he differentiates in the chalan ...

Siddhant Bhatia I fully agree with this. I think what happened is that many people started listening to it, and because it appeared to be Yaman Kalyan at first, they didn't finish the entire recording. It becomes much clearer during the drut khyal. While there are numerous instances of the komal rishabh being used, for the sake of an example, if one starts listening from 27:13, one will hear Ustad Ji's taan in a descending motion while touching on komal rishabh.

I’m afraid you’re not quite listening closely enough. He rests on the Nishad over and over again. In Yaman, he will rest on the Shadaj more. Nishad over and over again despite the Shuddh Rishab gives the feeling of Puriya. Hence Puriya. How he also glides from G to S almost ignore any Rishab at all. I may be wrong about this but that’s how I hear it. Have you heard Bade sing Yaman Kalyan? His Meend from G to S will have a pronounced Shuddh Rishab on the slide. Whereas he ignores the Rishab on the slide reflecting the concept of the weak Rishab in Puriya.

The mood of the presentation reflects it is'nt Yaman Kalyan. At the beginning Ustadji himself declares " जब पुरीयाकी चाल कल्याणमे विलीन होती है तब पुरीया कल्याण होता है" Even the notion Puriya kalyan previously was identified as Yaman Kalyan was not of use what I think.

So unusual. There s no touch of puriya tho. Sounds like yaman with slightly diff challan

Admirer the Chalan differences are what make it resemble Puriya. The resting on Ni and Ga... and the diminished role of the Rishab just like Puriya.
