I follow quite a few people who are Liga MX Femenil fans on Twitter and none of them were surprised Mexico dominated this match because they believe LMXF is just as good, if not better, a league as NWSL. They were still massively overjoyed but not surprised. USWNT fans shouldn't be that alarmed though, because they are a young team who haven't quite found the right starting XI yet and have Emma Hayes' coaching to look forward to.

I have never seen the states that panicked and having everyone in the defensive box when México would go under attack. I've been following the Uswnt for about 8 years, and it was odd. There is no chemistry, and everyone still continues to play on solo mode. I feel like there's a lot of things happening behind close doors because I have also never seen an almost discouraged Morgan. Her post match interview seemed very self-aware, mature & yet discouraged and mentally exhausted like with no energy left in her to keep explaining where the team went wrong. She's a Vet who was used to being on the top all the time who is now in one of the worst eras of the NT. We'll see where this goes and where Alex ends up

1. I was not offended by Horan's comments, I thought they were spot on. 2. Im glad Spain qualified for the Olympics, they are the team to beat, Im excited to see which team will even come close. This makes me want to watch the competition even more. 3.I feel like the US approached that game against Mexico like a meaningless game that was already in the bag. They expected to win; they brought on the veterans I guess to deliver what was expected to be an easy win. Mexico showed up & showed out. 4. The newcomers are promising, but at the same time those first 2 games were against low ranked teams, I want to see the newcomers tested against a quality opponent, I cant help but feel like both Sophia Smith & Rodman have struggled against top tier teams,. perhaps with better coaching they'll excel.

I love Lindsay Horan, She's an intelligent person who is not insular like a lot of Americans. She plays outside of the USA which gives her a different perspective on the US game. I speak really generally here as the US is a huge country but the predominant feeling I get from an outsiders perspective is that Americans just can't handle any sort of criticism, let alone have a nuanced discussion about anything.

Emily Fox now plays for Arsenal , so she will get the similar perspective as Lindsay , because they are getting experience of European football, the more ppl from USA that play away from NWSL can only benifit them , because the NWSL is so insular to one style of playing, in the long run it could be detrimental to the players / USWNT, as we learnt from WWC23 the rest of the world has caught up with the USA, African , Asian and South American teams can’t be dismissed as ppl used to. Hopefully after Emma Hayes gets some consistency in the USWNT they will start performing better.

The USWNT is in the process of transitioning so while the team is trying to get some cohesivity and bonding it’s not going to be possible for them to win every game. Mexico played well, but overall got to give the USWNT younger players time to gel together. The USWNT are lucky to have got Emma Hayes , but it will depend on how receptive the team are of Emma’s coaching style, if they listen to her USWNT future will be brighter, if the players are arrogant and obnoxious and “ think” they are in charge of the team , then there’s going to be conflict between coach and players. Emma Hayes knows her stuff and won’t take any crap from big ego players.
@Lisa171327 ай бұрын
I agree and Thank God Emma won't put up with any crap from any big egos, because their are more then a few of them on the USWNT lol! I know Emma will not hold back on telling every player what the need to do to improve and what she exactly expects of them, which is what they all need. Also some of them are going to have to let their big egos get humbled a bit and Emma is just the one do it.

People are just way too sensitive now a days that's just the hard truth. I've never been a fan of Morgan, but what you are saying is absolutely true. People unfortunately move on to fast and are unpredictable. One day, they like you, and when you can no longer perform to the fullest, they boot you off and forget everything you've done in the past. It must suck and it's sad, so don't blame her for her sass.

I m thinking of the way we honour soccer players of the past as though theyre sacred but shred the current generation of players especially online. Lindsay is obsessed with the game...she can have her opinions. Theyre more valid than most.@@a12martinez23

I think possibly Girma could. Last night's game lacked leadership and direction. Yes we were already through but we never want to lose to a rival. Congrats Mexico. I know we are all saying it but May/June and the arrival of Emma Hayes can't come soon enough. I remember that interview with Viv and Lisa about Munich. Whether in sports or out, people do not work well if they are not allowed to enjoy themselves. Enjoying themselves can be consistent with professionalism. Your comment about the WSL being the best middle ground may be right on the mark. I do think that the NWSL is losing ground to the European Leagues in terms of which is the best.
@jenniferjerome37897 ай бұрын
The European clubs by far are a level above the US both in men's and women's soccer. The NWSL are rebuilding so I think we should expect it may take time to be back where we were. I honestly don't think the new young players are as good this time around and there is only so much the seasoned players can do about that. My only issue is about the "seriousness" of the other countries approach to playing. Yes, if you want to be the best and this is your job then you better stop expecting this to be a joyride. Could you imagine if the men's team said "yea, Germany is too tough on its players, I just want to laugh and enjoy playing". Your making money, you better work your butt off and produce something. Great episode!

Going into this Gold Cup I was a bit worried because of last year but considering we won the first two games I think the USWNT are finally going the right direction and you can definitely see the progress that has already happened with Twila and Emma in charge. I think it's a really good thing they're changing the roster to see what every players strengths are and who will make the best team for the Olympics. I think that's also why the USWNT didn't do well with Vladko because he never changed anything at all and didn't give more of the younger players a chance. From the first two games it's clear the younger players like Olivia Moultrie and Jaedyn Shaw will bring their best and change the team for the better so I'm really excited for this new era of the team and to see what Emma will do come July! It was a bit disappointing we didn't win against Mexico but the team is still figuring themselves out right now and Mexico is really competitive but I do have hope that we'll get better and more cohesive as the players get used to playing with eachother. Also, I was wondering if you heard the news about Sheffield United coach Jonathan Morgan. He's been sacked from Sheffield after he admitted to having an inappropriate relationship for 3 years with a former teenage player he coached at Leicester. He's also the same coach that was put under scrutiny for alleged bullying behavior towards Maddy Cusack. What makes me mad is that Sheffield knew of complaints about him from his previous clubs before they hired him at Sheffield but they just ignored his bad reputation. I wish they would do more to protect players and make women feel safe in football and stop hiring coaches with bad reputations.

Horan's right about the culture. If you want to go tailgating at a Friday night high school football game, live in the USA, if you want a culture that's passionate about soccer, move to almost any other country on earth. Soccer needs history and local rivalries to thrive, the way high school or college football has. The UK is 1/3 the size of Texas with about 150 professional teams. It's rare to be more than half an hour from a pro club. Teams need to grow organically as part of the local community, you can't have that with franchises that move around. I get the impression, rightly or wrongly, that professional sport in the US is more like entertainment and controlled by the media and billionaires, soccer is changing for the worse in Europe but it's still the people's game, in local clubs their community has pride in, top down verses bottom up. You need to bring in promotion and relegation for a start and turn it into a meritocracy

US is a multiple sport country - there are great rivalries in baseball, football, basketball and hockey in both college and pro levels. UK is basically 1-sport dominant. US soccer will never have that dominance - but it can grow to have greater influence. However, keep in mind the EPL - and other stablished leagues - are trying to build their fan bases in the US - much like the NBA is an international brand.

I was shocked to wake up this morning and find out that the USWNT lost to Mexico 0:2. On the other side the USWNT was already qualified for the quarterfinals and may still be able to win the tournament. The USWNT is bringing in new talents, who still need some time and should be guided by veteran players, who maybe didn't take that much seriously enough. So sad about the ACL injury of Mia Fishel. Unfortunately we are seeing such injuries happening almost every week. Just last week one of the talented young Austrian U19 national players, who qualified for the very first time to the U20 World Cup this summer in Columbia, Linda Natter, also tore her left ACL and will now be missing that once in a lifetime experience. Lidsey Horan's remark show the big difference between the US and European football cultures. I'm also more used to the traditional team photos, which show a more professional than a "fun" approach of the game. If you play long enough for a top European club with lots of Chmpions League matches, you definitely understand what Lindey id referring to.
@rasclotify7 ай бұрын
Horan wasn't wrong, but she learned the lesson of specificity of language counting the hard way. She shouldn't have apologized. But I think there ARE Football fans here that are smart about it, like many of yr subscribers here, we do follow the game in & out, multiple leagues, but in general it isn't pushed here as a sport. In other countries they live & breathe Football from the jump. Messi is a god in most of the world, here they're only now on that bandwagon. Here the sport is like 5th most popular on the tier of organized sport & young kids do it as an extra curricular activity in every suburb, but don't dream of it as a career, it's a thing kids do when they're kids, & thats it. As a result, Americans are not consumed by the sport. Every kid in Europe has Footballers on their bedroom walls, every kid in every lower socioeconomic neighborhood in the world has kids in the streets kicking around a football, its the ppl's sport, it's a culture, here they have Michael Jordan or Lebron James.

Two things: 1. Sam Mewis simply regurgitated the commentary from Golazo Network analysts, she didn't come up with it herself. Which brings me to number... 2. Proving that Lindsey Horan is correct. Most fans simply take the commentary by the tv announcers as the standard. Although her choice of words is not ideal, it is sincere and true of most casual fans, the kind that don't follow football around the world, but rather only follow the USWNT for reasons of familiarity, a sense of misguided patriotism, or casual support for social movement. Case in point: A. Morgan actions and comments are very unprofessional. This sort of childish behaviour is not what should expected of an icon on the most senior member of the team. The coaches knew exactly what to expect from her (like Naomi Girma), which is why they had selected younger, less experienced players. The team has a major tournament coming up in the summer,. The W Gold Cup is not a fifa sanctioned tournament. The perfect time to try new things and see new players. She should have understood that.
@r2dad2827 ай бұрын
US soccer media sucks vs European media. Listen to American commentators on a soccer match vs their Euro counterparts. Our people are blithering idiots who want to spout on and on about player personal lives while the TV cameras focus on head shots and the crowd and the coach antics. The Euro versions are very different because they assume a higher football intelligence, they are noticing movement off the ball, spacing, details about the game US talking heads ignore. And there is a lot more silence since they don't feel the need to backfill empty air with blather. I think that's what Horan has noticed, along with interactions in the streets with French fans. French female fans of football watch the club game--US female fans do not. And if Horan had said this in NL no one would have batted an eye.

I do not see how Horan said somethings wrong, fundamentaly. It is about tradition and cultures. I guess you don't have Football in your culture like most Nations have in Europe. Having said that, we are not as patriotic in Europe either. By that I mean, we do not cheer on the National team in any sport, just because it is our Nation. That is my view upon it and I can be totaly wrong. When I watched Germany play Sweden, many Years ago, in Berlin, there were not a whole bunch of people going there just because it was Sweden playing something, it was football fans, just like if it had been another sport. Does it sound remotly understandable what I try to imply? Mexico beating US...well I am not chocked. Every Nation loses sometimes and perhaps US fans should have less expectations if they are in a Generation switch? It takes time. Every team end up with the same problem eventually.
