A total of 80 people according to this report have been layed off. We are told these are “Mass Layoffs”. The entire UT system employs over 104,000 people according to Wikipedia. These layoffs represent 0.077% of UT’s total workforce. These are not “Mass Layoffs”! Hate to see anyone lose their job but let’s have a little perspective in our reporting.

That's sometimes true, but in this case, many of those staff were bringing in huge dollar amounts in federal grants and scholarships for students. So if an employee was making $80k per year but bringing in $5 million, then their job was actually lowering tuition for students at the university. The state intervention is likely to make the university's finances worse, not better.

Colleges & Universities had a purpose. Which included ensuring were provided known factual scientific knowledge as a base for learning, allow thought to develop into theory analysis for forward scientific growth. To prepare students to meet a minimum standard of evaluation and graduate and transition back out into society as self sufficient, productive and contributing members of said society. Why did that change? Now it seems there is an over abundance of useless made up degrees which produce nothing towards society. Just how many quirky off the wall graduates with unusual existential degrees in made up courses of study are needed which do nothing but ensure resumes basically share… “I got a made up degree which states I studied between social events and learned nothing to prepare me to join the workforce and earn a living”

The university I work at has trimmed and underpaid their staff for years, yet somehow the system added a huge system-wide, highly paid admin DEI unit, new staff, and sunk tons of money into DEI initiatives. We need our admissions and records staff, our facilities workers, but these positions have been in hiring freeze yet the administration and DEI has bloated and hopefully will explode soon.

Sadly there are systems and practices in place. For the most part they are effective. Unfortunately there are some who for whatever reason don’t qualify or don’t represent themselves well in interview or hiring practice. Same with internal advancements and promotions. Suddenly the reasoning is distorted to cause being “race”. Those who expect to be hired or promoted based on their race, religion, ethnicity, INSTEAD of their qualifications or lack thereof are part of the problem. They have a self image which portrays themselves better than the other applicants…. Ergo when not selected default to blaming racism. Basically a built in excuse for failure and self victimization rather than “for what it is”.

The funny rub though -- she does not remember how to be actually useful. She can't just find another job -- she has both skills: to whine about injustices and cut people based on race, gender and other hereditary traits. What was that line? Irony can be ironic? Good riddance -- we need more affordable colleges, teaching trades and actual skills, decided on merit rather than on someone whims

@@FerrisSOCAL that was the DEI jobs, the communication jobs are separate. The State doesn’t control the communication jobs, this report said they’re outsourcing the communication jobs.
