Very nice! You two are real modern day mountain men. You have seen more of the west than any person alive. I can’t imagine hiking all the places you two have hiked. This is really rugged hiking! I have watched many of both of your videos. Thank you for making and posting these on KZbin as not very many people are capable of hiking like that. I hiked hard when I was young but could not do the kind of hiking you guys do. Interesting what Joey brought along for food….carton of raw eggs, avocados. You two watch out for each other and get along nicely. I am surprised you see very few rattlesnakes in all your bushwhacking. I have seen quite a few in my adventures. You just walk as if there are none around. I would be very careful if it was me hiking. Take care.

Thanks for this magnificent video! I'm happy to realize that Muddy Creek got the protection of wilderness designation last year in the Emery County Public Land Management Act. We can thank SUWA and everybody who advocated for this over more than 40 years.

Another awesome video! I love the captioning, the details you gave. For us viewers who doesn't even backpack, it is not enough to show how beautiful it is but that this nature has a name! Thank you for taking the time to name the trail, the turns, the scenery. Thank you for taking time to focus on structures that caught your eye, coz it does caught ours too. I can see that you care for Joey. Whatever his story is, Joey is just a simple guy that doesn't care about opinions of others, he is living his life in his own accord, he seems to have complete abandon to the standard of society and because of that, he lives mostly at PRESENT, and just go whatever the day brings him! Sometimes we need to be reminded of that side of life as well; for us that have a home, a good job and family, we like to plan, to control, we want to be sure of things, but we need to balance it of the 'Joey' too, so that we can enjoy life to the fullest and makes life interesting and fun! Really spectacular, those narrows, with their frightening impressive huge walls ! Not for claustrophobic people ! - Incredible ! Artistically created by nature and water during millions of years..... The yellow, ochre, red and golden shades made by the sunlight on the stratums, the reflection of the water on the cliffs, all is endless stunning beauty. Many thanks for showing it ! - However : bad luck for Joey. Although he is a hardened brave hiker (whose real "home" is possibly unspoilt nature, wilderness, I think :-) :-) ) he feels unwell, struck by the heath. Desert all around : not a single living soul, but you two..... As a good friend you take care of him, Jarl, and in order to spare him, you even shorten your initial plan. Very generous ! Great work guys. The most surprising part for me was Joey's kitchen, ha! Quite a selection for so many days in the desert. The desert sun and heat are no joke! Glad to see that Joey listened to his body and you guys played it safe. Having lived in the Arizona desert for 35+ years, I never hike outside for more than a few hours when it's above 90 unless I'm in and out of the water for the duration. Stay safe!

What a stunning trip. The beautiful shapes and colors, the spaceship rock (good name). Amazing! I felt so bad for Joey. It was definitely heat exhaustion. It sneaks up on you. He actually handled it very well. I did a July 2k gain scramble up a trail in southwestern Oregon, and I was leading a horse with me as well. She was fighting me the entire time. By the time I got to the camp, I felt terrible. Muscle aches, clammy with chills, and nauseous. Not fun! Joey was smart enough to recognize the symptoms and rest. And what a good friend you were for him by opting to hike back to the car. Still a fantastic trip, and like you said........"those places will be there for another day". Also, it finally hit me why I have not seen your older videos yet. I was in college from 2018 thru April of 2021, which was pretty brutal. But I promise I'll get through them and make sure to click the 'like' button. I always enjoy them. I'll try not to pester you with comments on all of them. Maybe. 😂😂 🐝🙏❤

Hey man I am really enjoying your videos. I never filmed any of these places. Glad you did. One thing I would mention. I have seen debris wedged by water, 25 feet up in cottonwoods. Flash floods in these canyons are no joke. One fifth of the annual rainfall can occur within a couple of hours. Use caution with a little psilocybin or mescaline. Good times.

Thanks! Yep, I know, seeing those logs jammed 30ft up above the water makes you think of the possible flash floods that can occur in an instance. This was actually just 3 days before the tragic storm that blew through the swell in May in Little Wild Horse canyon.

Great looking trip. I have spent a lot of time in that area and its neat to see places I recognize. Good call walking out early, had you not walked out that day you might have been caught in the flash floods that came through there. I was in Capitol Reef at the same time you were in the Swell and it was hot!

I spent a whole week in Harris Wash with an upper and lower respiratory ailment... no fun! At one point I was sitting in an alcove thinking, "If only I could find some horehound to make tea, it would help me to feel better, but I haven't seen any in this whole canyon." Just then my eyes fell on a solitary green plant growing out of a mud flat, illuminated by a shaft of sunlight. It was horehound! I harvested and dried it and had my tea, which helped immensely! Never saw another horehound plant the entire week. Providence.

I suspect Joey got heatstroke before the trip started - maybe on the drive out there. I noticed Joey was not himself on the 2nd river crossing. He already new it was a soft bottom. But Joey kinda lurches across and then we see the trail leading off in front and Joey is lurching off to the left and makes a big adjust. At that moment I thought - that's not Joey. And then we see deterioration up to Jarl capturing that wild lurch. This is what heat stroke looks like to others.

It was a real treat to chat with you guys on what was the most remote portion of my solo bikepacking journey. Joey has covered a lot of desert miles in 2 months so I reckon he's getting his money's worth out of those shoes. Looks like you timed your trip well; Do you happen to know the CFS in Muddy Creek when you walked through? When I explored Chimney Canyon back in March, I found camp at a well-established and shady spot near the mine site you saw next to where the Canyon forks. In early spring there was a slow seep with shallow puddle about a mile down canyon from that spot. -Famous Amos

It was great running into you as well! I think the change of plans allowed us to get out before the flash floods for sure, we would have been there right in it if we had not hiked out, not in a dangerous spot, but our cars might have been trapped at Tomsich butte for a while. Where you out by the time the storm passed? I think I know the campsite you are talking about, it had some logs, a fire ring, and some old stuff too, I went up and looked at it. Not sure I liked the cliffs above that camp though, looked like it wasnt a 100% sheltered from potential falling rocks, I found some amazing slick rock camps a little further up though, some sheltered from the sun. Did you go up the "Music of Chimney canyon"? I am curious about that one. The CFS was 55 the day we went through the chute, which was perfect!

I did not visit Music of Chimney Canyon to my knowledge but did do the clockwise loop past Little Susan Mine before finding camp and walking down Muddy Creek back to Hidden Splendor for a 1-night backpack. I hope to explore Steve Allen's books myself one day; It's apparent those have been a gold mine for you guys!

Yes, I am looking at permits now, lol! I use my LaSportiva approach shoes, review coming in a few days, with normal socks and gaiters for sand and rocks, which is all I wear for both wading and normal hiking. Joey used some completely worn out Zero Drop shoes with occasional neoprenes, I dont think he cares, its just about whatever he has that is not worn out on his gazzilion miles of backpacking:-)

Coniferous Forests no we didnt see anyone in the narrows, I am not sure about poisonous insects, I dont really think of it, we run into snakes, tarantullas and bears, lots of bears. Would love to see a mountain lion at some point. My only concern is getting injured really, and that would prob happen from injuring a leg so thats what I am most concerned about, not bugs or animals:-)

My feet are troublesome, used to be blisters, not any more, but I sometimes have Plantar fasciitis, its been less after I switched to the LaSportiva Ultra Raptor 2 Gtx. The Leather on the tx4 are not happy about the water, but thats ok, I go through a couple of pairs each year

Thank you, filming in 4k, and not filming towards the sun seems to help, I always look for shots that look good in my camera lens. I also do a little bit of color correction especially on brighter shots.

Hi Jarl, great trip! Hope Joey is ok. When did you guys do this trip? Also wondering about the water situation in Chimney Canyon. Is the stream drinkable? Do you have to filter or can you just zap with Steripen? I'm familiar with the Swell but have not been in the Muddy Creek area. Was planning to check out Chimney next spring. thx for the info!

Hey, yes Joey is fine, the water situation in Chimney is good, plenty of water but not in the lower part close to Muddy Creek, get water from Muddy Creek if you plan on camping in the lower few miles. There are good springs several places in Chimney Canyon and at the junction with the North and south forks there are several. I use a Sawyer with no issues, Joey uses a steripen which he is happy with, he also used a sawyer for the Muddy Creek water this time. Thanks for watching, this was a pretty recent trip.

@@southwestartistgallery8174 Allen is pretty accurate, there is a good spring in Quandry, but very little water in Cistern, I would suggest camping before going down Cistern too far, no good camps in there or below Cistern, we were thinking we would find good slickrock camps through Cistern, but everything is at an angle.

Another great video. Your style is one I appreciate watching. One question is how you shoot the video. In your list of equipment the only camera equipment you list is the iPhone. Is that the only camera equipment you carry? How do you carry it when you are shooting? How do you protect it?

Thank you so much, that is a good question since I only post about the iPhone. The phone is the only thing I use, it has 3 lenses, one is a zoom, one is a normal and one is a widescreen. The key is to film in 4k 60fps, the 60fps makes it smooth and stable. I have a 6 $ phone case I bought online to protect it, thats it. When I am in water I also have a small dry sack I keep it in whenever it feels like it could get wet. Nothing to it lol!

Norwegian Xplorer yes sir. Indian peaks wilderness is stunning, there’s some beautiful country up there and it’s not to far from boulder. One of my favorite places in Colorado (thus far) is the rawah wilderness. They are both stunning!
