Utah's NHL situation isn't really comparable to Vegas or Seattle. Vegas and Seattle were expansion teams. The Utah team isn't an expansion, as it was in Arizona last year.

Since the Millers sold the Jazz to Ryan Smith, he has: - Traded the one all-star happy to live in Utah for a bunch of high-risk draft picks - Traded its other all-star for more high-risk picks rather than securing an all-star in return - Purposely downgraded a playoff team to the worst team in the league - Dumped the iconic original and desert sunrise alternate jerseys for high school JV team jerseys and the least attractive historical jerseys - To be original, made black and white a color theme when the Nets and Spurs already use that - Ended the Jazz being the one thing that unifies everyone in Utah by grossly overpaying to bring an NHL team to a market with no interest in hockey (2 minor league teams have failed there, including one that had a new arena purpose-built for them) - Lauds all the economic development that’ll happen downtown while almost no Salt Lakers can afford to ski anymore thanks to the 2002 Olympics, or to buy or rent a place to live thanks to having the booming tech economy he bragged about in this piece I’m all for passion and progress as long as it isn’t snake oil, and so far he’s been nothing but a snake oil salesman. I’m ready to see him step up and ACTUALLY do something that helps the Jazz and everyday Utahns, rather than sell everyone his snake oil -

Utah does not have a track record of attracting and keeping top talent. Only one major Sports franchise, and every time the best player on that team has had the opportunity to go to a bigger market they did. ( Deron Williams, Donavan Mitchell, Gordon Hayward). SLC still has a reputation for being dull, smelly ( great salt lake) and terrible for someone wants the PR that a place like LA or NYC can bring. So this Ryan Smith is blowing smoke.
