I've only been tying flies for three months, but thanks to your videos, the flies look great to me. You explain very well and understandably. I really appreciate and enjoy your efforts and have learnt a lot this few months. Thanks again and keep us happy with new ideas and videos about flies. Happy New Year! 🎉

Thanks Ohli! You are one of the best tyers I have ever seen. Really. Out of curiosity and since I didn't have the floss I tried it with a few antron fibers. It works and when twisted tight creates a round rib like the floss also seems very durable. Thanks again keep coming with the great flies and tips.

Thank you so much. As you already noticed.... Floss is not a must... Its just easier to work with.... Create nice taper. I was using utc 70denier... So floss needs to be thin... Also there are some embroidery threads that have same structure as floss.... So u can use them too.... 😃😃

Any of flies presented would work. But point fly has to be light or/and drift has to be short and river shallow.... Mostly its something i would use as a single fly. I have a video in euronymphing which may be helpful for you 🍺

Thanks Vladi for the video. I take advantage of the occasion on the UTC threads, to highlight something very important in them. The strandas of UTC threads (and others as well), unlike UNI threads (and many others), are not tied together and subsequently twisted, so this results in a flatter thread that is much easier to manipulate when making ropes and dubbing loops, since we can separate the thread into two branches very easily.
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. From all those branded threads UTC is among the best for sure. Very versatile thread.

Very nice video (and your others, too). Since the ribbing thread here doesn't seem to need to have the particular qualities of fly-tying thread (i.e., laying flat), it seems like you could use any thread at all, as long as the diameter is OK. Even more so since you're coating the fly at the end. I'm thinking normal sewing thread, as long as it's not too thick. Thank you!
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 4 жыл бұрын
Why not. Any thread is fine... As long as it doesnt have stray fibers sticking out. If it does surface wont be as smooth after applying superglue or resins

Check out “Mole Fly” pattern. It’s what you tied as your emerger.
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Quite similar. But my is shuttlecock style emerger... Its more or less like Hans Van Klinkens once and away emerger... But similar and i am sure it fishes just the same.... (i never heard for mole fly before so thanks 🙏)
@flytyer2368
@flytyer2368 3 жыл бұрын
You can see that the superglue made the color of the thread bleed into the ribbing. Why don’t you coat the entire fly with head cement first to “waterproof” the ribbing and then coat it with the superglue, The rib will stay nice and white and not turn a lighter version of the body color.
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Thats true about colour change, although using varnish wont prevent it(it will make time for making the fly longer) .. When certain materials get saturated they tend to get different colour. Sometimes waxing it will prevent it or using white underbody will preserve body colour.... Which still doesn't solve rib problem.... Choosing the right material solves it... But there is more than one way to do things... This way works for me Cheers Vladimir

Hi Vlad! This was a really good video (like all the others) So I presume the super glue you are using doesn't turn "white" with water. Would you mind sharing the link of where you're buying it or at least the manufacturer's ref?
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 3 жыл бұрын
I buy it in convenient stores here in china. Its 501 or 502. Both can be good. Problem is that even when you find one brand that doesnt get white, next batch you buy may turn white. So, i always test it before i start using it. Make one thread fly and varnish it... Leave it overnight in water ant in the morning i know is it good or not 😀😀

I can't find that Textreme polyfloss you've mentioned as ribbing materials. I've searched several fly tying suppliers that carry other Textreme products, but none of them carry the polyfloss in any size. Any idea where in the USA I might be able to locate this?
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 2 ай бұрын
@@thomasbrooks8112 dont bother, just find polypropylene yarn. One for parachute posts will do. Make sure you test it with one fly first. Because sometimes it can change color significantly after applying varnish

The french Fly what you are talking about is "la peute" from Henri Bresson. Made with only Mallard breast and thread. Ugly fly but very effective emerger.

Thats the name.... First time i saw it i knew its a killer. Few guys from Belgium showed me the pattern... Later i saw it in some book with cdc... It was silk-floss for body and cdc for legs... But whole feather was wrapped..... Not as i did... But i try to do everything my way if i think its better..... Anyway, thank you for telling me the name.... My french sucks 😂😂
