In this video i will tell you real, authors, thoughts behind an amazing fly Klinkhåmer Special. Based on article that was written by Hans Van Klinken and correspondence between Hans and myself, i will try to tell a real story behind this fly.
Its origins, evolution, how to tie it and how to fish it..
In this very video i am making my favourite colour version, give it a try....
Cheers and tight lines

The thing that sets your fly tying videos apart from the other is that you explain how they are fished. I also like when you float them in water to show how a fish will see and recognize them. I am inspired to tie some variations of this fly for my specific creeks and streams. Keep up the great work!

Thank you very much, I just found your site today and find your tutorials to be outstanding ! I started with the snowshow rabbit fly tutorial and it also was terrific. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to viewing more of your work. I have seem Klinkhamer quite often, but I have never tied one (I am not very proficient with Parachute patterns). Is this pattern designed more as mayfly emerger or with the shaggy Ice Dub body can it be effective as a caddis pattern? Thanks again and please keep up the good work!
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching this one. I am very happy that you find my videos good and worth watching. Klinkhamer is designed to imitate caddis flies.... Whichever dubbing you use its designed as a caddis...but at the same time... Its perfect as a mayfly emerger. Make few, in few colours and more importantly in few sizes... Try them in both, mayfly and caddis hatches and you will start loving this fly 😀
@hansstaartjes2093

thank you for a most instructive video on your version of this famous fly. The mistakes you mentioned; tying the post too high, trapping parachute fibres etc., I have made them all! I'm also a big fan of the gsp threads. I recently bought a spool of each colour (there are not that many tbh!). One thing I notice though is that the post on my flies frequently tend to rotate on the finished flies, unless I add a drop of superglue to the base. Now you say that's detrimental to the floating ability of the fly, I'm stumped! Perhaps a drop of superglue on the hook shank as you lay the base thread down might help?
@Oholisfliesandfishing
@Oholisfliesandfishing 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. That drop of superglue is something that Hans Van Klinken considers ruins buoyancy of the fly. I tried to make video according to his preferences. I personally do add superglue. When it gets dry i am sure it cant ruin buoyancy. Unless it goes up the post too high.

I have not tied since last spring and your videos have truly refreshed me on good technique. Thanks very much. I mainly fish chalk stream water and your reminders on certain common mistakes will help anyone produce better flies for picky fish. I am usually to lazy to tilt the fly into the vertical when wrapping a klink but can see that it does make some of the process more visible to the tier and this makes sense. I will sometimes tie very small parachutes down to 32 or so where moving everything is not a good idea! Thanks again for your detailed and explicit approach - these are very well produced videos - which camera and mike do you use?

Thanks for all the compliments. Appreciate it. I tilt flies even when tying 32s....😂 Habit i guess. As for the gear its sony a6000 and sigma 50mm macro lense... Old one, got it for around 50 euros. Light is LED 18w i think... And another one is below the fly.... Quite bright one may think but considering i shoot video at f8 or f11 my shutter speed has to be max 1/60...should be around 1/100 for better quality.,. Considering that i do this for 6months now i think its decent. Before i used my phone.... I dont use microphone.... Just one on the camera.... Since i dont earn any money from this... And so far i dont think i want to, i wont be investing in gear soon... My only regret is that i havent bought sony of newer generation with 4K and eye auto focus...

Vlad, you're on to something here. I presume that the Ice Dub resembles the air bubbles in the shuck of an emerging caddis. Yesterday this pattern drew some very aggressive takes here in Montana. However, I never landed a single fish because the light wire hooks bend out. I am retying with a similar hook but with standard wire. Congratulations and thank you very much for this terrific fly.
@Oholisfliesandfishing

Glad you have tried it and i'm even more glad it works there too. I had similar problems, i used some thin TMC hook and big trout bent it... Now i use some standard wire hooks. Going up the post will make fly ride lower.... Which is a good thing... And regarding nice tying... Thank you for that.... But as you already noticed... Its the fisherman that catches fish... @@Oholisfliesandfishing Just one question Vladimir regarding tying this fly using your method as seen in this video. I've tied this fly using the Ice Dub UV Tan dubbing and made the body very thin, similar to yours. However, the body seems to become pinkish due to the para post underneath. I don't see the same in your video. Perhaps the video doesn't show it... Do you also see the pink showing through? The pinkish color is more pronounced once I wet the fly.

Excellent video! I'm glad that you said at the end of the video that tippet size should match the size of the fly. For example, 6X will not work with a size 12 fly, but 4X would be okay. Too many anglers are so concerned about drag, and trout seeing the tippet, that they use 6X or even 7X with every fly, regardless of the fly's size and bulk. It is not hard to obtain a drag free drift with 4X and a size 12 fly. Even 3X would work if it was long enough. Trout become wary of drag, not the appearance of the tippet. In what country do you do most of your trout fishing?
@Oholisfliesandfishing
