I think part of the reason why the movie is a direction continuation of the anime is that Utena and Anthy seem to love eachother from the start. In the movie, Utena battled Saionji and reprimadned him because of how he treated Anthy, rather than just for Wakaba's honor. On the opposite side of the coin, Anthy warned Utena instantly and interferread in the _first_ battle. Just my thought. At this point, she's already the love of her life, she just doesn't know it yet.
@urbanharmon34712 жыл бұрын
I honestly like believe it as well, IMO, it seems Anthy's the one to be in control of the duels here for the most part considering how Akio is dead here in the movie, I like to believe, considering Anthy does have sorts of powers here, that yes, she does find Utena sometime ago after the end of the anime, but Utena doesn't exactly remember her since she was force to disappear from taking on the Swords of Hate for her at the end, so she essentially creates a new world of Ohtori Academy and sets the duel games here, in order to reawaken Utena's memories of her.
@anthonysmith34152 жыл бұрын
wait wait, Anthy is not allowed to interfere and she's supposed to do whatever the current champion tells her to do, so why did she interfere and give Uthena a sword, that's not something she should be able to do unless Uthena is her champion, the TV series made more sense
@Pink5G2 жыл бұрын
@@anthonysmith3415 She could ALWAYS do that, she chose not to, that was the entire point of the TV Series, Anthy let Akio use her, but she could always do what she willed and walk away, Utena never saves Anthy, but she manages to show her she was always the one with the power to do what SHE wanted. The movie, regardless of if you take it as a reboot or sequel, condenses that and make it more direct

@@mandoz353 also look at the architecture of the film, it's almost as if the original school has been cut up and restored... You can even see Anthy's bird cage like rose garden in ruins i'm pretty sure. I also like to think she couldn't find Utena so started the cycle again by herself - without Akio's complete control over her. I think by starting the cycle again she also lost bits of her memory which is why she still reverts to old habits.

I was really confused when I first watched the movie because I thought it was an adaptation of the series and didn't understand what was going on at all. Later, I read that it is actually a continuation. Anthy remembers everything from the original series, already achieved revolution and has returned for Utena who has forgotten. Then it all clicked, I rewatched it and now I love the movie.

It's been less than a week since Rachael Lillis, the English voice of Utena, passed away from breast cancer. We will keep watching this story, in this form or another, again and again - the one she had such a key hand in bringing to us. Also she voiced Shiori, which means she had the best line in the movie: "It was a big mistake thinking you were the only one who could turn into a car."

This movie is more of a metaphorical summary than a continuation. It just goes against too many core tenets of the show to be seen as 100% real, because from an external standpoint it just feels incongruent like they were really trying their best to cram what was a slow and steady show with a very serious build up into a stylish movie. Also utena was out of the school when she “died” or rather disappeared. The show treats a characters presence in the show as a metaphor for being trapped in the cycle of society and abuse in itself.

I might be recalling wrong, but in the original series, Utena beat Saionji while wielding a broken piece of a practice sword. That says a lot more about her potential and her tenacity than just outright giving her the magic sword for her first duel. This version feels like a step backwards, not an improvement. I vaguely feel like watching the film again, but I remember it being quite the mind-twist.
@galaxysuta2 жыл бұрын
Okay so in the movie, contrary to the series where Utena is the tenacious prince. This scene install a reversal of role where Anthy take the leading role and act of her own agency, going against her role as the rose bride. Giving of her own will the power of dios to Utena. It is a step forward for Anthy as it show how far she have come after leaving Akio's grasp at the end of the series! It's clearly a lot less badass but in my opinion It's not a step backward. You are right though this movie is an acid trip when you watch it for the first time o-o'

essentially, the movie is only intended to fill in gaps in the original story and change it a little. It's complicated if you haven't seen an essay on it or something.

@@galaxysuta Utena is not the prince, the principal is the prince... But he has lived in that fake world too long and he has become twisted. His wish was twisted by the witch who created the inverted world they are all trapped inside, everyone in there is actually dead from the revolution they keep mentioning in the TV show except Anthy who is the only one to leave that place since she is the only one still technically alive. The reason Utena in the show gets the "spirit of the prince" into her when she duels is that the original hope and intent of the prince is still alive and wants the dream to end, the principal who is the body/mind of the prince has long since became corrupted by the inverted world and wants to rule there forever.
@galaxysuta2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelcastro5339 Oh i'm not saying Utena is the prince. The entire point of the prince in the story is that the it is a social construct that causes harm to both the prince and the others. What i'm trying to say is that in the original serie Utena was playing the role of the prince, trying to save Anthy while not understanding her view on the matter. While in the movie Anthy is the one trying to save Utena from the grasp of Othori's schoolwalls by giving her the opportunity to save herself like Utena once did for her. The movie instead of replaying the role of Utena's prince persona, use the duel to show how much Anthy grew as a person.
@yoseflopez5141 Жыл бұрын
@Michael Castro That's actually not true. None of the characters are dead and the coffin is a metaphor representing an abundance of different things such as the roles the characters play. Both Anthy, Utena, and other mentioned characters have abandoned their roles throughout the series which is why the memory of them disappears along with it. The movie even retells the abandonment of the Prince and Rose Bride roles by showing their strawmen with the names attached. The revolution they're mentioning is the escape from the matrix; game; coffin; way of living. This is why in the TV series they keep repeating the mantra of smashing the world's shell.

No matter how far I must travel, what strange and foreign sights I may see-“ (Utena ends up back at the school)

There’s many clues that show that it could be a direct continuation. At the end, everyone forgot about Utena, but the movie made it seem as if she came back to the school, and everything starts repeating. Part of the clues they point out is Anthy not wearing her glasses (last episode she had left them on Dios desk). But honestly, you gotta take this as IF you were watching Evangelion, a lot of it is symbolism and you gotta constantly rewatch to catch on so many details because of how surreal the show is.
@michaelcastro53392 жыл бұрын
It's not a continuation, it's like most movies made to do a quick and dirty of a show, so instead of watching 24 episodes to get what the hell is going on, you can sit for the time of around 3 episodes and get a super compressed version of it.
