It’s wild to me how much the Onion Prince sounds like a crazy incel and yet he’s deemed too “nice” to become a Duelist. I know it’s because he’s not unstable and hateful towards others to be useful, but it still feels icky. Patriarchy moment…

The one deeming him "nice" is Mikage, not the show, something that really expands on Mikage's world view and why he was still stuck in the school. You can draw your own conclusions as to why the Onion Prince wasn't elligible to be a duelist - there's more layers to "nice" than being a good person, maybe nice refers to the desire to actively hurt someone, maybe it's just the willingness to go after other people. Most black rose duelists are women for a reason, completely fed up with the unfair treatment they receive from society, not finding a safe place anywhere and willing to destroy it all and have it be their way (Tsuwabuki faces a different type of oppresion, but still a real one). The Onion Prince benefits from the system and doesn't really have any use in destroying it, so I guess that is considered "nice" for Mikage? Who knows, that's the beauty of the show, you can make of it whatever you want

@@franmartinez1682 Oh I totally agree that the show condemns Mikage and his views. I said "patriarchy moment" as an attack on Mikage himself.

@@iheartcartoons1786 oh yeah, Mikage was very incel-like which is funny in retrospect, I guess this show will forever be relevant as long as humans continue to exist

The Black Rose weaponizes negative emotions towards others. The Onion Prince doesn't have any, so the Black Rose wouldn't be able to use him. Reducing him down to an "incel" just because he feels anguish at seeing his crush with another man is ridiculously reductive and shows that you weren't paying much attention to the show. He's not a "bad person" in the way the Black Rose requires because his feelings towards Wakaba and Saionji aren't toxic; he places the blame on losing her purely on himself, and his anguish is purely aimed at himself, not at Wakaba or even Saionji. Thus the Black Rose has nothing to feed on. It has nothing to do with you being an unequivocally good or bad person; a "good person" in this context just means you don't harbor negative emotions towards others.

@@MistaHoward You're right, I won't deny the fact that his rant does devolve into sexist territory but at the end, his outburst makes it clear that he blames himself for not being "good enough" for Wakaba and he's not as far gone as the other dudes in this series.

Interesting that Kozue was the only one who interacted with a receptionist. Why? And who was the receptionist? Also, why was Kazami considered too "good" for the Black Rose? And finally...was this whole arc just some big mindf*ck by Akio and Anthy?
@iheartcartoons17862 ай бұрын
Kazami hated his own “inadequacy” to win Wakaba’s affection over Saionji. If he hated Saionji or Wakaba enough, he would have been a valid inheritor of a rose signet as he would have a target of hatred to pursue. He’s a bad person for his views on women, but he’s not so far gone that he can be manipulated.
@franmartinez1682Ай бұрын
In my experience the guys that are like Kazami are too... dense to be properly manipulated. They only really care about their own perception, he's not gonna go out of his way to do anything to get Wakaba, he's always gonna choose the easy route because he knows he can afford it. Whether he had real feelings for Wakaba that he had been harboring for a while or he just wanted to have a girlfriend and saw a chance with Wakaba/Utena and anyone would have done is left for interpretation in his episode, but considering he was rejected by Mikage I'd say it's the latter. He's "nice" because society treats him nicely, he has nothing to rebel against.
