Really recommend a group of Pearl Gouramis. As not only are the a pretty and decent sized fish but in my experience at least once mature are better at encouraging smaller fish to shoal better. As the mature males become a little bit more secretive, still coming out but also spend a significant amount of time hidden in the plants especially around the territory they make. And will chase off (not seriously attack just give a chase) to other males that get too close to their territory. Having a 5inch fish come darting out of the plants suddenly is pretty good at mildly spooking small fish. Not making them panic, avoid food etc just ball up a bit better and feel more comfortable staying in tighter groups than roaming around mindlessly. I've found they're some of the better fish for encouraging this behaviour as while big enough and willing to chase enough to trigger this their mouths aren't big enough to eat small fish.

I was thinking more like, he buys a house, rips out the insides, waterproofs the whole thing, and uses that as an aquarium, of course planting every square inch in the most beautiful and amazing way. You can see the fish as you walk or drive by simply by looking through the windows. No garden front or back. Just a house turned into a massive fish tank with some truly stunning hardscape and plants. Poor Kate would have to put on diving gear to scrape down the windows.

@ukkiesc50879 ай бұрын
I don't understand why people would complain about putting a lot of plants in at the start. It's far better to go hard on the plants early on and go extremely slow on adding fish than the other way around. It's perfectly fine to save up for the fish afterwards if you are low on budget.
@elune437499 ай бұрын
plus he does this to ensure quicker video production and less algae, more plants just makes sense all around if you can afford it. maybe they're just jealous.

Well I understand. One pot costs between €4 -8 in my local fish shop. There is a solution though, propagate your own aquarium plants in tubs with soil and some led lights. Like on the excellent KZbin channel Aquarium plant lab. It takes some time and patience but it produces a lot of healthy plants without breaking the bank.

Why do people get annoyed at the amount of plants that you start with? You're a content creator who is trying to share what your vision for the tanks should be. Makes sense for you to overload the plants to make it look as close to final as possible. I actually quite love it!
@sableknight80619 ай бұрын
The biggest mistake most people do when starting off a planted aquarium is NOT planting heavily to start! It helps with balancing and getting everything dialed in right away asap. It's the best thing someone can do to when starting off! The people that complain about it are delulu lmao
@NinniAquariums8 ай бұрын
@@sableknight8061 I totally agree. I work in a pet store. I don't know how many times I've said "Buy more live plants" last month 😅 So many people buy fish, just one or maybe two plants, get a lot of issues and try to buy different types of things to put in the aquarium to get rid of all their problem. But all those things are often some kind of liquid in a bottle that they don't really need. Or they want to buy a pleco. And there I go saying that they should buy something completely different, but the customers do come back again and again and again, so I guess they like what I'm doing.

Hey MD, I use the FX6/FX4 filters on aquariums and a very easy mess free way to disconnect them from the hoses is to leave the power on shut the intake hose valve off then fully disconnect the hose. Once that is done then let it bubble for a few seconds then close the outlet valve but DO NOT disconnect this hose until you unplug the power supply. If you follow these steps there will be enough of an air pocket in the top of the canister to allow the lid to be removed mess free. Thanks for another great video you aquarium looks great

That Java fern is going to go berserk. I had some in a c02 tank on top of drift wood like that before and it took over half my tank on accident. The problem is that you cant just trim it like a stem plant or other easy plants to propagate when it turns into a bush like that. You have to find the longer leaves manually and clip those

Close the inlet and run the FX6 for 5 sec and then unplug and close off the out quickly and you drain some out of the main holding to make cleaning a bit easier, instead of the little drain at the bottom which can be delicate.

I absolutely agree, plants are so beneficial so I always heavily plant when starting a new aquarium. I know from personal experience my heavily planted 29 gal never had an issue consuming any ammonia and nitrite at lightening speed (unlike my 10 gal with a few slow growing plants). When the plants settled in my 29 I never had an issue with ammonia/nitrite spiking. It makes life so much easier, also the plants are beautiful and watching them grow brings me so much joy (the fish feel safer too so everyone wins!)

Wow! That is something else! It has a sort of saltwater reef vibe, except with freshwater plants and fish. I like that you even have a few killifish at the top. What species are they? They look a bit like really nice Ceylon Killis, and if that's the case, when the male gets his breeding colours in, he'll be a real beauty. An absolute showstopper! The plants, as always, absolutely make the wole thing. I agree that plants are an important part of a freshwater ecosystem. If you have plenty, and if they are the right species of plant, they will keep the water chemistry perfect. For me, really the only maintenance I have in a well planted tank is trimming. I have no use for any extras, and I've flooded the local market, so most of my trimmings end up in the dustbin. It's sad, but what else can you do? I have an FX 6 on my turtle tank. My turtle is much larger than Timmy. He's a softshell, and he loves to dig. digging is his purpose in life. He digs holes so that we don't have to. It makes it impossible to keep plants in his tank. A tank for a turtle his size gets dirty fast. He's a sloppy eater. It does mean that I'm scraping the aquarium a lot, especially under his basking light. Even with all the mess he makes, the FX 6 keeps the water crystal clear. I do have to do frequent water changes because ammonia isn't any better for him than it is for fish, but charcoal in the filter keeps the stink down a bit, plus Fluval make a filter pad for the FX series which also work to keep ammonia down. The FX 6 is the best cannister (best filter even) that I've ever had. Water changes are a snap with it, since you can drain it off from that plug which you pointed out. You can also refill the tank with it if you want, but it seems to me to be just as easy to do it the old-fashioned way, and it doesn't stir up the substrate quite as much, since if you use the filter to refill, it will have a distance to drop. I refill my hillstream loach breeding tank using the filter, and don't worry because that's mostly good sized round rock with only a few plants on the side which are protected by the rocks. The Hs loaches don't mind the water rushing in because they evolved to be in fast flows. I have a spray bar in that tank, and I run the filter at full open to create a strong current for them. I designed in two slack water areas for them and that's were a lot of the breeding sparring takes place. It's kind of fun to watch the males chase each other around in tight little circles as they case each other's tails until one has had enough and swims off. The FX 6 in that tank only gets cleaned twice a year, whereas the one in the turtle tank gets cleaned every other month. The ammonia removing pads have to be changed out every time in the turtle tank, but not nearly as often in the hs loach tank. It's an fantastic tank you've put together, and an absolute show stopper. It has been fascinating seeing it come together step by step, from getting it into the shop and up on it's stand, and all the steps in between until where it is now. It has to be your Magnum Opus to date.
