@UnderTheScopeAnime8 жыл бұрын
+MurderofPhoenixes NA Everyone upvote this comment so I don't get two thousand comments asking about the order lol.
@HodgePodgeProducts8 жыл бұрын
+MurderofPhoenixes NA - Personally I recommend watching Neko and then Nise because it makes more sense chronologically and Neko is a much better introduction to Shinobu and the Fire Sisters. Nise just kind of throws them in without introduction. Also Kizumonogatari goes in there somewhere. Probably anytime after at least Nise and Neko.
@mopna97738 жыл бұрын
+Hodge Podge Productions I will stay true to the intended release order by Shaft. And the reason why Neko went after Nise is because the first arc of Monogatari S2 directly connects to Neko. And Kizu can be watched right after Bake since Nise exhibits Shinobu's first major character progression since Arararagi met her.
@HodgePodgeProducts8 жыл бұрын
MurderofPhoenixes NA -No, it directly connects to the last arc of Bake. It's a prequel, after all.. Either way you order it, one the three cat arcs will be separated and this way makes more sense. Kizu may be watchable after Bake, but you are wrong about Nise being her first major progression after meeting her. That happened in Neko. Hence my earlier statement that it should be watched before Nise. Kizu could be watched before or after... but as for now it should be after because only one part has been released and the progression is not going to be clear anyway.

I love it when someone actually "gets" this series. Really just understands what it and its characters are all about, and why its so beloved for that. Monogatari was a series I knew I'd love from the start, but not until I finished Bake and Nise did I even realize that it would truly be one of the greatest anime I've ever watched, and just continue being great up to the present day. I love the cast, the visuals and audio, the character-driven and limited perspective narrative, and the dialogue so much. It's witty when it wants to be, dramatic and poignant when it needs to be. And I love how the characters just feel so holistic to me, and their conversations being tangential and not always 100 percent serious feels so realistic too. Monogatari in the end is a series about communication and conquering inner demons, but not in the typical shonen way by beating the shit out of them, but instead by talking to them and others about them and even learning to coexist. If you love the series now having finished Bake, you'll definitely love it going forward. I'd love to see a review from you about Second Season and Owari someday. I've only seen this and your video on deconstructions, but they're excellent. Keep up the great work. You've earned yourself a subscriber. Also yes, Hanekawa is best girl. :3

Have you really only watched Bake at the time of this review? The way you were talking sounded as if you'd watched up to SS which really says something. From Nadeko playing the "victim" to Hanekawa's "innocence" to the deconstruction of the harem genre, it's really impressive how early you were able to catch all of these. It's refreshing to finally see a review of the series that doesn't just put it off as another mindless fanservice/harem show, who can't see past anything but what's shown on their screens. I just hope you've avoided/can continue to stay away from any spoilers as I'd love to hear your thoughts on the rest of the franchise as everything comes together. Lastly, I don't know if you read all your comments, but I just want to say thank you for taking to time to actually observe and appreciate what the Monogatari Series has to offer. Will be patiently looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the series if you decide to review them. Otherwise, I hope you'll at least watch the rest and enjoy them as much as you did with Bake.

Character progression in this series is truly fantastic,the amount of people that personally associate with the mental health issues or inter-personal issues suffered by or experienced by the characters in this show is staggeringly high. The monogatari series isn't just an anime in this respect,its also a tool for real personal development. This series can teach you that it really is ok to rely on others or that persuing something long enough or with enough conviction can make it a reality but the main thing it teaches is that you are the only one that can save yourself. You have to make the change or accept help or stop procrastinating on something. You are the one who needs to take the first step towards something different....also Hanekawa FTW
@4grammaton8 жыл бұрын
Why would anyone call Monogatari a harem anime? It's always been a supernatural detective mystery story to me. The fact that it contains mostly female characters who sometimes flirt with the male lead doesn't make it a harem. First of all, Araragi is 'Gahara exclusive. Second of all, Nisio Isin just likes making young female characters; it's a personal stylistic choice, not an indication of genre. I prefer Digibro's explanation of the series as a display of "mindful self-indulgence". Also, I just watched your video on deconstruction, and calling Monogatari a "deconstruction" goes against everything you explained in that video. Mainly due to not being a harem, but also because the personalities and behaviour of the characters is pretty far from realistic.

Great analysis. You brought up a lot of the points people frequently praise the series for, such as its fantastic use of symbolism (i.e. each character and the oddities that afflict them), the world being seen through the eyes of the narrator Araragi, (this changes at various points in the series btw) as well as Araragi's martyrish role in the series. I look forward to seeing your review for Second Season and Owarimonogatari, IMO the strongest installments in the series so far.

pretty great rewiew. I agree wholeheartedly on everything you said except one key thing, that its a deconstruction. In my mind, its a reconstruction, imbuing all the tropes people like about harem with depth and meaning without straying too far from the core concept. It adresses the main complaints the genre gets with a critical eye while acknowledging its strenghts.
@q.m90948 жыл бұрын
actually i disagree....ive always looked on nisiosin's work as someone bringing the most bland and generic characters ever then just fucking the depth out of them....its a trick kinda like how madoka magica seems girly at first glance
@Azmodeus878 жыл бұрын
Q.M I don't really get how that is a disagreement. That's pretty much a textbook description of a reconstruction. Also, i wouldn't call it a trick. Following a woman for a 3rd of a movie only to off her and have the rest be a psychological thriller, or giving us what's seems to be the name of a person or place only to reveal at the end that it was an object, those are narrative tricks. NiSions character writing is always taking tropes or clichés and expanding on them in (emotionaly or physicaly) logical ways.
@q.m90948 жыл бұрын
+Azmodeus87 ya...exactly....taking cliches and expanding upon them....btw half your comment was lost on me bec. ive never seen madoka magica i just listed as an example because its the only nisiosins work i know of other than katanagatari(and i still havent finished that) but thanks for completely spoiling it :)....its ok tho you didnt know i'm not mad....btw in your eyes whats the difference between a defonstruction and a reconstruction?
@Azmodeus878 жыл бұрын
No need to worry my friend, not only isn't Madoka written by Nision(mostly by Gen Urobuchi) , but none of my comments was about Madoka at all. The women bit was about Psycho, and the object bit was about Citizen kane (figured it was ok to spoil 2 of the most famous twist in cinema history). In my eyes, a *good* deconstruction takes it's clichés and exposes all their flaws trough logic until it becomes clear it is unreasonable, while a reconstruction does the same but makes it work instead of showing why it doesn't work. Senjougaharas issues, for instance, deconstructs the tsundere.*SPOILER* But the fact that she overcomes them without losing either tsun or dere reconstructs it, showing how a person could be tsundere while still being a well rounded person.
@q.m90948 жыл бұрын
+Azmodeus87 well...in that light ya...i agree with you however a character like (SPOILERS)...hanekawa(by your definition) was actually deconstructed in the monogatari second season as in losing its personality/trope/archetype......anyway talkin about this anymore makes me feel douchey :) when it comes to monogatari you can argue for days but there is soo much stuff there its likely you're both write....its a fuckin nightmare tryin to explain what this show is about to a newcomer LOL P.s ive never seen psycho or citizen cane nor do i intend to so its cool...hell i dont even know if i'm gonna watch madoka magica....however if i would recommend something after finishing the monogatari series is reading kizumonogatari(light novel) its awesome.....and really you'll never understand how strong oshino is or how much hanekawa means for araragi until you read/watch it

Well if you want some action, you should watch kizumonogatari (one of my favorites franchises of the series)
@erejnion8 жыл бұрын
First, Nisemonogatari sets up the story from there on, so don't blame it for not working by itself too much. Second, oddities are... well... not the problems themselves. I'd actually associate them more with "change" than with "facing up to your own internal demons". Ah, how to say this. How about this: sometimes, a new internal demon may not become internal, but instead become external. Black Hanekawa is not about the problem of stress itself, but about the problem of Tsubasa not knowing how to release this stress in a healthy and constructive way. So, when she hits the need for a stress release for the first time, she instead pushes this demon out and attacks her parents. But, because Tsubasa is... nvm, I shouldn't spoil the Tsubasa Family arc.

The first time I watched this series, I was bored and hated it. But years later, coming in knowing what to expect, I'm really enjoying it. The dialogue, the characters, the bizarre visuals that I'm making sense of, how much more subtle the supernatural elements are. A theme throughout the series is the dumbness of one victimizing/pitying themselves. Oshino's perspective PERFECTLY embodies this theme. Kanbaru denies her true, dark wishes. Hanekawa (the biggest example) refuses to fix her horrible life and wants Araragi to "save" her. I won't spoil Nadeko's. If you thought Black Hanekawa was sexy in Bakemonogatari, Nekomonogatari (prequel) should have a boner warning label.

While you're right, I'd just like to not so subtly recommend reading the visual novel for anyone who sees this. While the anime had a couple good points to it, when it came to the way the story was handled, it was kind of a mess. Also, the visual novel is on Steam, so it's actually really easy to get. What's that? You would prefer the uncensored version? Well, Denpasoft has that available for you. For whatever reason, Grisaia no Kajitsu/Fruit of Grisaia is actually incredibly easy to find in English, so I'd recommend giving it a try. While it definitely won't be for everyone, I personally thought it was really enjoyable. So run fast, hit hard, and read books. (Or visual novels in this case.)

If reincarnation exists and we always are reborn why do our current lives matter, why aren’t they “fake” And the tone of the conclusion may seem trite but the idea of what makes it “real” regardless of what one might think being spiritual connection and love is well realized (even if it’s done so in really weird and uncomfortable ways at times lol) The book is def one of my favorites in the series despite the inconsistencies in translation compared to earlier volumes

@@304Blaise huh, that’s not a perspective i’ve heard before. Interesting. I didn’t really consider any religious themes in the story. The explanation that I had kinda run with so far is that it’s trying to comment on how a person is deserving of love regardless of what they are, which in tsukihi’s case is a monster that kills babies in the womb to make room for itself. As far as Araragi’s concerned, her being a “monster” doesn’t matter because to him she’s still his sister.

I'm currently on Monogatari 2nd Season and I am really enjoying it so far. This show is really something else, and I really enjoy this breath of fresh air.

Call me impressed. For a moment I thought you would be as pretentious and naive like Digicunt (Digibro) with his subjective reviewing all hinging on what he wants anime to be rather than to evaluate anime for what it is. Making all that he says utterly worthless. As a MONOGATARI Fan I approve of this review and all I can say is that I'm astounded with the level of depth you gave this series and though I believed to have seen every aspect of this first adaptation; You've proved me wrong and opened new trails of perception that I hereby thank you for. You've earned my respect for giving this series a thorough look. On think I want you to keep in mind though it's the Bakemonogatari was pretty much character development this series has no where to go but outward. Keep in mind that the Tittle it's literally the plot dealing with given themes. Many reviewers compare many MONOGATARI installments to one another foolishly as if they have the same thing in mind to offer to the viewer. When the thing to decipher it's the theme at hand given at each tittle installation. Monogatari = Story, Tale, Legend Bake = Ghost, Bakemono = Monster (A Story of Monsters/Ghosts) Nise = Fake/ Liar, Nisemono = Impostor/Farce (A Story of Fakes/ Liars/ Impostors) NEKOMONOGATARI BLACK & WHITE [Pretty Self Explanatory] Kizu = Scar/Wound, Kizumono = Dis-flowered, Damaged Goods Bakemonogatari - 15 Episodes -Hitagi Crab -Mayoi Snail -Suruga Monkey -Nadeko Snake -Tsubasa Cat Nisemonogatari - 11 Episodes -Karen Bee -Tsukihi Phoenix Kizumonogatari - Movie Trilogy -Koyomi Vamp [Tekketsu-hen THEATERS 2/26/2016, Nekketsu-hen Summer2016, Reiketsu-hen WINTER2017] Nekomonogatari Kuro - 4 Episodes -Tsubasa Family Monogatari 2nd Season - 26 Episodes which 3 are recaps Nekomonogatari Shiro - 5 Episodes -Tsubasa Tiger Kabukimonogatari - 4 Episodes -Mayoi Jiangshi Otorimonogatari - 4 Episodes -Nadeko Medusa Onimonogatari - 4 Episodes -Shinobu Time Koimonogatari - 6 Episodes -Hitagi End Hanamonogatari - 5 Episodes -Suruga Devil Tsukimonogatari - 4 Episodes Yotsugi Doll Owarimonogatari 12 Episodes; 13 on Blue-Ray -Ougi Formula -Sodachi Riddle -Sodachi Lost -Shinobu Mail Koyomimonogatari 12 Episodes -Koyomi Stone -Koyomi Flower -Koyomi Sand -Koyomi Water -Koyomi Wind -Koyomi Tree -Koyomi Tea -Koyomi Mountain -Koyomi Torus -Koyomi Seed -Koyomi Nothing -Koyomi Dead Owarimonogatari Gekkan [TBA] -Mayoi Hell -Hitagi Rendezvous -Ougi Dark Zoku-Owarimonogatari [TBA] -Koyomi Reverse --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Orokamonogatari Wazamonogatari Nademonogatari Musubimonogatari -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do the rest of the series, I wanna see how in depth you are able to go as it moves in and turns a bit more radical.

+Chaotic Thinker Reviews Kizu should be after Bake if it's supposed to be release order or chronological order. The trilogy is considered a part of the final season of the anime but when all 3 movies are out I think it'll be best watched after Bake, Nise really isn't meant to be read until you've read all of Kizu, not having that removes a lot of the significance of what happens in Nise. The Nise anime is good on it's own but it's a pretty straight adaptation of the source material so not having Kizu before does have an impact on how you'll perceive it.
@chaoticthinkerreviews77418 жыл бұрын
SikeSplitter Perhaps but Kizumonogatari is a prologue so I don't think it will be nothing but a ➕ to see it but not a ➖ of any sort. That said Kizumonogatari adaptation its the definition of genius. I saw it and I was astounded on the level of master piece it is.

Chaotic Thinker Reviews Ya I saw Kizu as well and it pretty much blew my mind. Anime wise it's definitely not a minus to not see Kizu before Nise but I'd say if you can you're better off seeing it or even reading it before. I think Bake is really the only show in the series where not that much is gained by knowing about what happened with Kiss-Shot, in comparison to some other parts of the series where you'd gain so much from knowing.

If you'd like some criticism, I feel like (also because you suggest it at 0:55) you might have not left enough time between watching and reviewing this series. You didn't say anything bad about it, and I get that it is a great anime (I love it too), but from other videos and comments I was sure you would for example mention Sengoku's arc. What did you think of Sengoku? Is she not a great example of fanservice ruining everything? I saw you said you like fanservice "When it's done right" and "When it's used to sexualize characters, most of whom are in their teens, it disgusts me.", which is exactly what I feel about the fanservice with other girls VS Sengoku's entire arc.
@UnderTheScopeAnime8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Andrew It didn't bother me as much as it usually does only because it served some narrative purpose. I mean they kinda had to show something because of the snakes constricting her body. Her sexualization carried a heavy sense of pain with it, unlike other series where it's just to fetishize them.The scene in Araragi's room was the only part that I really didn't care for. Her arc was definitely my least favorite, but that had more to do with it simply not being as entertaining as the others imo.

This anime seems to be very similar to ''My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, As I Expected'' where they both have a destructive nature while trying to help others and they too have that hair on the top.

Interestingly enough, after a crab molts their hard shell, they become very soft and vulnerable. Just like a tsundere, a crab is hard on the outside and soft once it molts, or, "on the inside". :P

Shinbo is mentioned a lot here, but as with most Shaft shows he is acting more as a supervising director on this series. The true mind behind Bakemonogatari's visual style is Tatsuya Oishi.

I've watched six episodes now and so far I'm impressed. I hope the rest of the episodes will keep me captivated this way as well. Also it's a huge plus when I keep thinking every 15 mins "damn, this reminds me of Utena". Some of the visual aspects and tricks used in this just scream Ikuhara to me somehow. (Utena is my ultimate favorite anime and nothing so far has come close to it) This video really inspired me to give it another go after dropping it after the first episode years ago. I'm glad I bumped into this!

"What would it take for those harem tropes to get that way". That's an insightful way of explaining Bake; I like it. Currently watching the franchise; it's fascinating and frustrating. I didn't realize Monogatari was a harem at first. Harems are usually off-putting (for me anyway) because of how unrealistic it is for Billy Beta Nice Guy to get half a dozen girls to fall for him; and sometimes it feels like a quality romance/love triangle story is ruined once the third, fourth, and fifth girls show up. Monogatari's harem elements really do remind me of To Love Ru/Darkness. Difference is, I can enjoy To Love Ru as a dumb ecchi, but because Monogatari tries to be more than that I find the out of pocket fan service and harem structure hella jarring- as we'll get into with Nise.
