I love the horrifying implications of the sentence "due to frequent theft, safety equipment was under lock up and only the admiral had the key." Like, it's one thing for thefts to happen, but for it to get to the point that emergency equipment is under lock and key and only the admiral is trusted to access it... how? How could any military let itself fall to that level, and on a propaganda piece like a flagship to boot, not some far off middle of nowhere post, that's the extra messed up part.
@drewjohnson-857 ай бұрын
2 reasons, 1 they where probably at the point where they wouldn’t have had any safety equipment unless they locked them up and the second is probably that they didn’t think about the potential consequences because they didn’t think the ship would ever be in danger, after all He is the flagship of the Great Russian Black Sea Fleet what could happen to him, it’s a common problem in non meritocratic militaries, you’re even starting to see it crop up in the US military as it starts to get more political in nature.
@martenkahr33657 ай бұрын
Not to mention it didn't solve the theft issue: the had thefts continued with no signs of forceful tampering with the lock, and sometimes equipment got used and put back for certain duties despite the Admiral not being able to come over and unlock it. The obvious answer is that someone had obtained a copy of the key only the Admiral was supposed to have, and the report completely ignored this facet of the safety equipment theft problem. Which suggests whoever was behind these thefts was probably cutting the Admiral in on the profits.

Hell they showed a picture of the Iowa in Kancolle to a WW2 vet and he said the crew would have painted the character on the side of the ship, come on people bring back the nose art it's cool as hell.
@rdfox767 ай бұрын
I used to be in contact with someone who, at the time, worked at the Iowa Museum and Memorial. He was a shipgirl enthusiast, and considered proposing they partner with Kancolle for crosspromotion, but decided that her in-game art was a bit too risque for them to use (and always regretted never commissioning art of her in a proper USN officer's uniform to suggest it). He did, however, show his boss--who had served aboard her in the 80s--a picture of the much more fully-dressed version of her from a Kancolle fanbook (produced before she was introduced to the game) called "Pacific." His boss took one look at that demure, proper Lady of War from the fanbook and said, "That's not my ship." So yeah, they probably would have gone with the KC canon version...

The Soviet Union was actually a very big naval power most people don't realize that they were building tons of ships all the way up to the collapse many of these ships worked pretty well then. The problems come in when 1 the government turns the money needed for crucial maintenance and modernizations into jetskis and mansions and 2. The lack of experienced personnel from about a decade of chronic underfunding. It's not that the moskva was a bad ship itself it's that well it's in the Russian navy
@RipOffProductionsLLC7 ай бұрын
The fact that most of the Soviet's best naval ports/construction and maintenance facilities were in member states that broke off during the collapse and wanted NOTHING to do with Russia afterwards also didn't help when it came to keeping their old ships in proper order, and making new replacements borderline impossible. Still funny that they didn't do any of the many things that could let you avoid bbeing in a position where the embarrassment of being a "global power" that has a "flagship" sunk by a county that didn't even have a navy was even possible.

Fine... it sank, that's the important part. On a more serious note, I'm reminded of a quote from one my favorite fantasy authors... not a direct quote, but close enough: "The priests and clerics tell us at the end of time, [God] is going to destroy most of us in hell. Man gets impatient, though, and tries to create it now, and calls it 'war'." There is nothing glorious about war. I very much side with the Ukrainian people: they should not cede one inch of land to Putin and his cronies. I do, however, want this war to end. Every time I see someone calling for war, I just want to ask them, "Are you going to be standing on the front line? Is YOUR son going to be among our first casualties? How many of your loved ones are you willing to sacrifice on that altar?" Be prepared for war, be prepared to fight tooth and nail if necessary to defend yourself, your nation, your liberty, should war come to you. Do not seek it.

They took long and painful way from one of the weakest military in Europe (despite massive sizes) to the most battle hardened military with experience in national-scaled warfare. And the main reason they withstand back then and now is remain the same - Ukrainian people. Putin property calculated that military and paramilitary forces will hesitates to fight back, judging by numbers and poor conditions. However, what Putin always underestimates, is willingness of people to fight for their lives and what they love. Regular citizens went on full civilian resistance, loyal service personnel took action without orders and tens of thousands volunteers organised themselves into militia groups. Almost all famous nowadays Ukrainian military units started as territorial defence battalions/companies: Azov, Aidar, Donbas, Da Vinci Wolves and many more. Even if the Westerners cowardly will ever turn their backs on Ukrainians, they will continue to fight. Because they know that Russians will do their best to wipe out Ukrainian identity and self-respect by any means.

To be fair to the Slava class (which Moskva was a part of), those 16 Sandbox anti-ship missiles are still pretty scary. Yes, it has no chance against a full carrier battle group even on paper, but they are very fast and hit very hard; you would not have wanted to face them as a Kitty Hawk class carrier escorted by Spruance class destroyers and OHP class frigates; even today, being engaged by those missiles is not something to be taken lightly.

Russia has never had a functioning navy the warship's the royal navy lent them on the lend lease program had to be scrapped immediately after they were returned because they had done no maintenance at all and allowed them to deteriorate to the point it would be cheaper to build new than try to repair them. When you look at thier refits and upgrades the picture just gets worse simply bolting new systems directly on top of old bearly functioning equipment with no attempt to integrate the two. This is why the radar and coms systems couldn't function at the same time and why the S200 air defence missiles ( a land based missile simply jerry rigged into launch tubes designed for an older missile.) were useless.
