I understand the science of flight well enough. I know why it works. And while I don’t buy into magical thinking of any kind… everything about flight feels miraculous to me. (I guess the fact that we figured it out at all is the miraculous thing). I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve flown, but I never get tired of takeoff in a jet. It’s almost a religious experience for me, every time. This video reminds me of that.

~.This certainly brings many happy memories of my days as Cabin Crew for BA. Apart from the busy work load and the routine catering to so many people, the endless cities I've traveled, and the opportunity to meet some great people all over the world. The sounds of roaring engines, endless clouds and the view beneath me are some things you never forget. Absolutely incredible. Thank you for sharing this mah584jr. Excellent video!

I've been flying every year LHR-LAX from 1996,sometimes twice a year. This past Christmas I was happy to fly on the new 380 but damn I've missed this sound !! BA top company,always flew with them even if sometimes was a little bit more expensive. Top service on board and on the ground,let alone the superb T5 !! But boy did I look forward to hear this sound everytime !! Cheers from Italy

I cannot believe that the 747, as far as I know, has been almost entirely retired. I think that even British Airways retired this plane. I have been using a flight simulator on the 747-400 with the RB211 engines, and it is such a pity that, as far as I know, I will never be able to fly in one of these in real life unless I have a very big bank account, but even then... I think they say that Lufthansa still has some 747's, but whether this is true or not... I don't know. Brilliant video.

Why aren't Rolls Royce engines very popular with other airlines who operate either the 747 and 767, are they less superior to GE or PW? Please could some offer there expert advice here?

I love these engines. It's a shame they're so rare. I consider myself lucky to see these at my hometown airport when British sends a 767. The funny thing is when they originally started service, it was a 777 maybe 4 days a week. Then they downsized to a 767 and decided to come every day. A few years later, they switched to the 787 when they began operating them overseas for a few months and advertised that they were using a Dreamliner. Then they switched back to the 767 again which makes me happy because I get to hear these engines. The 787 and its Trent 1000 engines are cool to see and very quiet, but the 767 with these engines is still more fun.

@n310ea

No, but the 767. Those are RB211-524H. The RB211-524H is a replacement engine for the RB211-22B and RB211-524B4 which are on the L-1011. If the L-1011 production had continued, they probably would have been fitted with the RB211-524H.

@david1731048

The 747 was designed at a time when transatlantic travel law dictated an aircraft had to have a minimum of 3 engines. Hence the trijet era with the DC-10 and the L-1011 Tristar. Planes with 2 engines or less couldn't fly any more than a certain amount of time (I think 2 hours) from the nearest airfield. That ruled out crossing the pacific and the atlantic. Since then 'ETOPS' (extended twin engine operations) means that due to the reliability of modern jet engines, twin engined planes can now fly long haul over large oceans. This is one of the main reasons aircraft like the 777 are overtaking older designs like the 747 as most popular choice for long haul operators. And yes, as common sense would suggest, 2 engines are cheaper to maintain than 4!

Because to actually get off the ground takes a phenomenal amount of power. Once you reduce the climb angle you no longer need the full amount. The higher you go, the more efficient the engines then become (in fact, way more efficient than an equivalent power piston engine!), then you need far less power. Those RB211's sound AWESOME!!!
