What a talent these three young sisters had. You can see the great joy they got out of performing and their acrobatic contortionism is breathtaking. They came to England and gave many performances here and were a big hit. They performed for the King and Queen and appeared at the London Palladium. By 1950 all of the sisters were married and retired from show business. The youngest, Dixie Jewel Ross, married the famous English song and dance man and TV star Dickie Henderson and they had two children. Tragically Dixie Jewel died from an overdose of sleeping pills on their 15th wedding anniversary. They had been on a trial separation and after two weeks Dickie returned home to talk about a reconciliation, where he was told that Dixie Jewel had died on the way to the hospital.

SO they start with three sisters, pretty, great voices and excellent harmonies and good dancing. Then the crazy contortionist thing starts. I was totally unprepared for that.

@KristineMaitland5 жыл бұрын
Yes. But audiences DEMANDED talent then - even in the 1970s. You had be able to sing, dance, do comedy and something else besides, And in truth, seeing talent is expensive, as Carol Burnett will tell you. That's why we have Got Talent and Idol and Voice shows. They don't cost much to produce.

Exactly. "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy" and "Mairzy Doats" changed people's lives, to say nothing of "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?". Then Bob Dylan came along and ruined everything.

The Ross Sisters never got their due, neither in showbiz nor in History. They were the most marvelously talented trio that hardly anyone ever heard of. What a shame for the producers to present The Ross Sisters in this inane skit "solid potato salad," it was a gross miscasting of their talent. Even that farmer introduced them in a demeaning way with that hog call (that suey, suey jibberish).
@thamnosma6 жыл бұрын
That type of intro wasn't all uncommon in those days. I think it came out of vaudeville tradition and looks so awful to us now. I'll have to look into the Ross Sisters to see what else is out there, but this was eye opening.

Coming out of a Depression and going into a War of Worlds they afforded to shoot hours of footage in triplicate then toned a couple contact prints and work / projection prints are made plus the bulky behemoth camera machine has a blimp encasement that you need a sort of truck to move not to mention the sound scoring and optical mag track burning into the answer print. Takes millions which not a few had at the time
