I think of it an honorable retirement. If there is a soul of a boat it wants to be used, to serve, to not be scrapped or to rot away worthlessly. To find new life as an artificial reef, to be a part of the oceans it once traveled I feel is a worthy end for these vessels that served faithfully for sometimes decades, to still have some purpose for possibly centuries.

I really enjoyed your video. I was on the Y73 Tanker in Vietnam. I came back to the states before she was back here. I searched for years to see if I could find out what ever happened to her. Several years ago , I finally found out what happened to her. The y73 was brought back to the states,and now is a artificial reef off the coast of South Carolina near Charleston SC. I have watched several videos of divers around her. I can actually see the exact stairs that were next to my room and the porthole . I contacted a dive company , and the sent me a picture of the Y73 just before they sank her. I’m so proud to have served on the Y73 and for my country. I’m so happy that she was able to continue to be recycled for something that will help our oceans. If anyone wants to see the videos , just search for the Y73 reef and you will find the videos . Thank you for what you do.

Suggestion: Move the statement you made at 8:05 to the start of the video. Speaking for those of us not familiar with this channel, I started this video off being very concerned that you were sinking (What I saw as waste and rubbish) into the ocean. Hearing at the end of this video that this project did take significant planning, oversight and work to ensure that all materials that would hurt the ocean were removed, and that this was actually good for marine life, and not bad was a massive relief. Such a big relief that I honestly wish it was made at the start - for those of us that aren't as familiar with this type of work, but still care about the ocean. I could see people with lessor attention spans who didn't get to the end of this video coming away with an incorrect and harmful understanding of what you were doing.

@@UWPICVID no problem! Really cool video, love what you do. glad KZbin recommended me your channel 😁 Things make a lot more sense now that I've watched the tugboat video. You're doing some really cool stuff!

I just figured the house was for the spud winch operation. Pretty new looking crane for that barge. I work on tugs and constantly joke about turning some of our older boats into reefs.
@UWPICVID5 ай бұрын
Yes there was a fixed crane on this barge. The crane handled the spuds.

Was that rust coming from the ports once the air bubbles where done. It also seemed to come out on the footage of the waves first hitting the welded out holes .
@UWPICVID6 ай бұрын
Yes it was rust. The water inside the barge was warmer then the water on the seafloor because the barge filled with warm sea surface water before sinking. This is part of the reason the rust filled water seems to flow upward since warm water is less dense then cold water.

@@UWPICVID Awesome ,I work at a wood shop . But the company also cuts metal and I've seen some refurbished pieces that we had gotten that kinda rust off. Anyhow thanks for the post and the information.

How do you get the camera footage from the cameras in the water
@UWPICVID3 ай бұрын
The cameras recorded to internal cards. The cameras were recovered by scuba divers after the barge sank. Then the cards could be removed and the footage transferred.

Listening to that low thud when it hits the seabed at 6:10 makes me wonder what kinda sound the Titanic would’ve made when it hit. It went down fast and a lot deeper. I vaguely remember watching a documentary either about the Lusitania or Britannic..pretty sure latter. That once the ship went under those still bobbing on the surface actually HEARD it hit the floor. Eerie stuff. The ocean can be so mesmerizing both in its bustling near shore habitats and its void. I both love and hate the ocean. I swear I suffer from acute thalassophobia
@UWPICVIDАй бұрын
Yes the impact force is pretty wild. During some of these ship sinking projects you can here the impact at the surface when they hit the seafloor.

Well done, nice job! I thought she was going to roll over and land on her back at one point. I’m glad to see you guys haven’t been forced with all the health and safety crap we have in the UK. if we were found to be boarding a barge like that without a pilot ladder or a sunken ladder in the side of her there would be uproar! ⚓️🦈⚓️🦈🇬🇧🇺🇸

its very natural to sink and rig with engine with lot of oil with diesel tank not removed (bcs it is 100% have some fuel in it and the watercooling of the engine have lots of fluid in there... probably the G12 snf every part of the boat have som vaseline on the moving part.. actually a lot of and we dont know what mess was onboard) really amazing project u in florida are really ahead of time bcs we was thinking that the scrap was best to have on svrapyard ... so u are proved me wrong lets sink all the ships and the sea will be black nice idea man .. cannot wait to see floridas

we can just dump all nuclear waste to the see and we will be saved from contaminaton right ?

I do not completely understand the comment however this vessel was a barge. It never had an onboard propulsion engine as it was always transported via a tugboat.

I assume you are referring to the flashing logos on my shirt and hat towards the end of the video. If so, this was done manually with applied effects, masking, and some blending. Each logo animation was down a bit differently.

Did you do any noxious fume tests before the member of the crew went below to cut holes in the barge?
@UWPICVID4 ай бұрын
It was determined safe prior to entry. But yes enclosed spaces on metal vessels can be deadly. If not properly ventilated oxygen can be depleted via the process of rust formation and cause a person to pass out and suffocate.
