I think that no matter in which industry you want to start out, sweet popcorn can only help you! So many foods in the US are soo much sweeter than in Germany, even the bread, why couldn't you get a hold of the sweet popcorn yet? You do realize that this can only change your life for the better, right? That you are holding yourself back here? Sometimes, you even get the jackpot when a few sugar corn are stuck together and you bite on that. Seriously, how can you live without that? Just reach for the stars and try the sweet popcorn. And once you conquered that, you will be ready for any job you want! ;)

Step 5. Build a full UX portfolio which looks like you have 2 years experience. I have been slowly making the transition into UX/UI, coming from being a Senior CGI Artist/Animator/Illustrator. Managed to get some interviews, while showing my experience and excitement for the role, even got an accredited degree from University. However if they are not able to see full breakdowns and examples of your work in UX, it's extremely tough to get through.
@AJSmart5 жыл бұрын
That's a very fair point! Showing your work and creative process is vital when building up portfolios and getting work! Great insight! Thanks for sharing Chad

I’ve been trying to get in since March 2018, left my corporate job & probably now at over 40 interviews, they just won’t give me a chance. More often than not, they ask for at least 2-3 years experience for a Junior UX Designer role, which is ridiculous. I’m watching this video looking for a reboot of everything, hoping to get it right this time. Great recommendations & hoping that I finally get in the door.

I'm currently in my second semester of Foundation in Engineering and Science in my university and im really contemplating if i should continue to get my bachelor degree in computer science/engineering. As an 18 year old im constantly clueless of what i want to pursue because i wasnt sure of what i like, so naturally being the asian that i am i chose the engineering path because it was the "safest" path for me to be financially stable in the future. I could try and do the undergraduate majors such as civil, electrical, chemical, environmental engineering and make it somehow work for me but idk The more i delve deep into ux ui design the more i seem to realise that that is the work that doesnt feel like work to me. Even in my first semester when i was in a c++ group project the task that i enjoyed the most was choosing which ascii art header/border to use and designing/animating the ascii loading screen. The problem solving part with writing the codes just wasnt my cup of tea. Going into computer science would bring me too much into the technical side of things(aka backend which is a nono for me lol). Should i change my path? I'm too scared to lose a bachelor degree any help or advice would be very very much appreciated :( HAVE A GREAT DAY AHEAD OF YOU KEEP UP WITH THE AMAZING CONTENT!!!

Maybe your tech job market is in Dubai? Regardless of country or continent, the job market is so very competitive for UX design and most other specialized career fields. I wish I could figure this sort of thing out for myself over in the USA, but it's not easy to find a foot in putting my best foot forward out there for it's difficult to impossible to find someone high up willing to sponsor and refer you in order to get an actual decent job opportunity that leads to great things. I guess a bachelors may or may not be helpful as employers don't really value it, but it shows you understand how to work with knowledge, technology, and data. And then study an expensive certification that require 1 to 6 months where you are then talking face to face with people in the industry or who have connections. The thing is certification is very expensive, but could be done in the evening and weekends while working some unrelated job. There lots of cheap to free internet courses, but they don't count towards a job. They're just for learning and inspiration. Sorry I can't be more helpful for if I could, I could better help myself as well.

How important is a college degree in this field? I graduated undergrad with my degree in television productions. I'm now trying to make the transition into UX design. But, if I can stay away from going back to school, avoiding the massive debt (United States tuition is nuts!). If college is SUPER important, then I need to really think hard about this career transition. My goal right now is to read a lot of books, learn the software, learn the theories, take a 10 -week course, and build a portfolio. I'm going to also include a few career shadowing and see where things go. But, if you have advice, I'd love to read them!
@AJSmart4 жыл бұрын
Hey Ryan, not important at all, honestly, you can pick up a LOT of the fundamentals through books, free courses, and youtube videos. It's more important to get some practical experience under your belt than spending 4 years studying the topic!

Great resources, thank you. I'm completely new to the UX world. I found my way to UX via my soft skills as a laboratory researcher and am now shifting careers toward UX. Specifically the UX-research and interaction design. What I can't figure out are what tools fit that UX niche, how they cross over to the UI world and how much of the UI world I need to understand as well. I do have an interest in all aspects but I'm also trying not to overwhelm myself with information and enter the dreaded analysis paralysis dimension.

I'm currently enrolled in a Udemy UX course (a different one than mentioned in the video), a design thinking course, and a sketching course. I also completed a CSS/HTML course and a content marketing course, and I'm starting to read design books. I plan on taking a boot camp in the fall to get some portfolio experience, but should I be doing something more "active" or output focused in order to actually practice UX?
