Thanks for the video, Bill! On your Caprice, hopefully it isn't one of the downstream o2 sensors that's behaving badly. Sometimes that can be an indication that the catalytic converter is failing, which an overly rich exhaust mixture due to misfires can cause over time.
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 5 жыл бұрын
When I bought the car, it had an incredible exhaust leak at the manifold flanges and was therefore running *very* rich. I patched that up not long after I bought the car, and gave it a new (stainless steel) muffler as well, as that too had rotted out. Although I don't believe much if any engine exhaust was actually reaching the catalytic convertor or any other part of the exhaust system way back then, I have noticed in much more recent times a sulfur ("rotten egg") smell at random times. If the catalytic converter is bad, I'll replace it. The last I knew, replacement converters for these cars were pretty reasonably priced. It might be going bad just because of age!

I take part of that comment back. I remember a magic erasable slate (it had a clear plastic cover, and underneath that, a grey membrane that was pressed into a soft black backing when you wrote on it with a stylus). When you were done, you could lift up both sheets of plastic to erase the writing. I still have it (less the stylus it came with). This originally belonged to a teacher's aide and she used it to write down the day's activities for students. She gave it to me when the school year ended. She was a classy lady. I stayed in touch with her for many years, until she moved away and later passed on. They had a moving away party, and I was the only student from my class who showed up. That's how much of an impression she made.

I don't think the owner's manual of my 93 mentioned the hidden presets, but it had them. Man, I miss those old GMs. I also figured out the hidden presets by mistake. Also, I remember only adjacent buttons worked. That was on the Cadillac's Symphony Sound. Also, I remember my Cutlass throwing a code telling me the computer lost power (during battery disconnect/change) all in all, Good video man. Nice to see all the cars running.

@uxwbill

That's a lot of what made these cars so great. They rode *well* even on truly noxious roads, and the handling was definitely better than what the plush ride suggested. Even on its stock, 25+ year old suspension components, this car's handling and turning capabilities have surprised me (in a good way). I bought replacement shock absorbers too, and need to get them installed. Or rather, bribe the Keykeeper to do it sometime.

I unplug the power antenna during the freezing months on my wagon, I've never had any issues with it since. It is very easy to unplug under the hood on the passenger side of the car near the hood shock. Also, I love hearing the noisy power steering pump for the first minute or so...mine does the same thing.

I love how many parts are literally exactly the same on GM made cars. My 1985 Corvette has the exact same trim piece behind the steering wheel and the exact same HVAC controls (just black instead of brown/blue). As well as a almost identical radio.
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 5 жыл бұрын
This actually does come in handy, for those parts that aren't made any longer and always seem to be in need of some R&R. (Another example: the underhood lamp assembly on this car is *identical* to the one in my mother's Buick Park Avenue.) Sometimes, though, GM did the darnedest things and produced assemblies that are only slightly (frustratingly, bizarrely) different from one another. For a period of time, I had an Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser's radio in this car. Believe it or not, that radio had a gap between this car's dash trim and the radio faceplate. Even more strangely: this car was assembled at Willow Run assembly, yet the records for its production would suggest that was done significantly *after* the plant is said to have closed!

They are getting rarer and rarer to find in nice condition. I'm glad I bought one when I did. Prices seem to have gone up significantly since. They made a lot more sedans than wagons, so those are still fairly common. 1996 was the last year for these cars. In 1996, the Buick division produced several thousand Roadmaster wagons. For some reason, only about 500 Chevrolet wagons were made that year.

I pulled an AC Delco cassette radio out of a 98 or there abouts grandprix in the junkyard just to see how it sounded, it was in really good shape and I know they can sell for a good penny on ebay but I was genuinely surprised at how well it sounded when paired with a good set of speakers. I also had a similar "awakening" with the old Delco AM/FM Stereo with built in 8 track player I installed into my 74 camaro. The radio being from an early 70's era Cadillac, and when paired with a small amp and a good set of speakers, it really came to life as well.

Ah, the old cold starts! It's amazing how reliable the auto segment has become. Even the Caprice fired up with a (mostly) charged battery. I had a 1986 Caprice Estate wagon. When I worked on it, it was massively reliable. Let the "real mechanics" (at least in my area) work on it, well, it was a crap shoot. Did you ever get the truck running out at the farm? It's been, what, a couple of years since the last update? Just curious where it stands, or rather, sits. Happy New Year and good to see you feeling better. Seems like.most.of the KZbinrs I watch have been down with some bug or another since around Christmas. Good health to you and the rest of the family.

For the heck of it i bought a Viking 4 amp battery charger that also can be used as a battery tender. I'm going to try that and see if it works. But i noticed when you got in your 93 chevy caprice station wagon the engine temperature gauge was reading at operating temperature.. Until you started it.. Is that normal from the factory or just something of an oddity in your peticular vechile.. Just curious?
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 5 жыл бұрын
The gauges are electric and don't read accurately when the key is off. They drift a little bit, but remain relatively close to where they were the last time the car operated normally. Other GM products of the time had gauges that were better about zeroing out when idle. The BBPOJ does that when shut off, yet it hasn't got the brake/transmission shift interlock (BTSI) that this car does, nor the three channel ABS.

First one to complain gets to find the "minor evaporative emissions control leak". Doesn't sound like fun to me, and doubly so in the cold. Or you can have the door prize, which just so happens to be an actual door. :-) Nor do I believe for even a moment that the oxygen sensors on the wagon will actually emerge from where they've spent the last 25+ years, and I say that as an incurable optimist.

The wagon still looks great for a 26 year old car. My $0.02 is a bad fuel cap. My 2001 Intrigue had the EVAP Canister Purge Valve blocked error code, so I replaced that part, the code came back, and ended up replacing the fuel cap. I now need to replace the vent valve as the circuit failed (easy part to replace at a good spot: next to the filler neck on the top left side above the left rear wheel) and fix the cooling system since there's a leak again, or possibly a misaligned hose. I did a lot of part replacements from Sept.-Dec., 2018 and the car still runs great (still need to change the fuel filter, IAC valve, and TPS module) and over 117,000 miles. 18 years old today as well. Here's to another 18 more.

It just so happens that I can't actually *find* the door prize. :-P (True story: the laundry chute door came off in my hands one day. And so I told everyone that I'd won a door prize. Further proof that I probably haven't got enough to do.)

The wagon's fuel cap is still in great shape. The only codes it has ever thrown are for the O2 sensors. It's never had an evaporative emission system control fault, which is perhaps rather miraculous, given that all the rubber hoses are likely original.

4:23 - 90 degrees? That'll be an unfun driving driving experience before long! In all seriousness though, does the Park Avenue's stock radio support the hidden presets too, or is it just in the previous generation, since it had fewer buttons?

The hidden presets were long gone by that generation of the Park Avenue. Provided instead are two instances of the FM broadcast band and one for AM (total of eighteen presets). And since this car is so equipped, up to two drivers get to have their own libraries of those 18 presets.

@UXWBill - Good call. I knew about the dual slots of presets, but wasn't aware that this was multiplied by the number of drivers (I always figured that it would simply switch the radio to bank 2 if driver number 2 unlocked the door).

I share your opinion on snow, to me nothing is better than the sound of distant two cycle snowblowers running in the distance muffled by the snow late at night through a slightly open window.

If you got that many cars just sitting around I suggest battery cutoffs for all of them.
